MYSTERY GUEST: Michael Caine
PANEL: Arlene Francis, Orson Bean, Sue Oakland, Bennett Cerf
NOTE: There were no episodes of WML aired the previous two weeks (Oct 30 and Nov 6, 1966). Closing credits added from an older rerun pre-GSN-credit-crunching.
Many thanks to Steve M. Russo for providing this episode in much higher quality than the version I had previously. Folks interested in high quality, well packaged, well-edited DVDs of WML (and other game shows) can contact him directly for more information at RetroTVFestival@comcast.net.

Michael Caine is one of my favorites. I love it when he wears those type of glasses too, very appealing. When John said that he's sure that Caine's welcome in America would go on, he sure was right and how!

There's no mention on her Wikipedia page that she was ever in communist China, which is good because, in this year of 1966, the Cultural Revolution would begin and intellectuals and artists would be hounded, exiled to the countryside to farm, or tortured and killed.

In 1966, Michael Caine kept himself busy by filming the following: "Gambit" (w/Shirley MacLaine), "Funeral in Berlin", "Hurry Sundown", and "Woman Times Seven" (again, w/Shirley MacLaine). In 1967, he kicked off the year by filming his third (and for a long time, his last) Harry Palmer adventure in "Billion Dollar Brain".

Michael tells the story of how he got his name (Caine is not his real name). He was a young actor in a New York when his agent called announcing that Michael had just gotten a lead role in a new motion picture. The agent said “Only one problem, someone in SAG (Screen Actors Guild) already had your (real) name” and that Michael would have to think of one quickly. Michael asked if he could call him back but his agent said “No, they’re writing up the contract now and waiting! THINK OF SOMETHING, ANYTHING!” Michael stuck his head outside his window to the street below and saw a movie marquee advertising “The Caine Mutiny”. He had his name! He then said, with his wonderful cockney accent, “It’s a damn good thing they weren’t showing 101 Dalmatians!”

Bob Hope is responsible for Cain's career. Born in London himself Hope set up a yearly scholarship for talented young people from poor families to study theater. Caine was the first winner. @@gardensofthegods It would be logistically impossible to stage a show of this nature nowadays. It wouldn't have the same vibe. People no longer engage in this level of oral exchange, which is part of the appeal of the show. And with the celebrities, no glamour. SO when answering machines became famous, he had one installed and put in this messg'' Peter sellers is not in at the moment....etc etc....'' not many people know that'' wHEN MICHAEL caine calld him , he heard that message....And one day he told someone about it and that famous line. Thats how Peter sellers made michael caine famous...Peter sellers also mimicked michael caine when telling a joke with caines accent and ended the joke with 'not many people know that!'' He got everyone thinking michael caine said it first. THATS the brilliance of peter sellers....

This episode is the first following the election of Ronald Reagan as governor of California. Notwithstanding his large victory, Reagan was not generally viewed seriously as a political figure. When Governor Reagan debated Robert F Kennedy for instance, Kennedy clearly underestimated him (what a general election for 1968 that would have been). One East Coast establishment person who truly did understand Reagan's good chances to be elected President as early as November 1966 was Bennett Cerf. In this month, Cerf gave an interview about changing presidential vocabularies over the years. He made the point that with speechwriters, delivery, drama, and showmanship had become far more important for Presidents than their skill in developing rhetoric and vocabulary. When asked where this trend would end, Cerf replied, "It could even lead people like Ronald Reagan and George Murphy a lot closer to the White House than anyone at Actors Studio ever dreamed possible." www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/01463376609368790?journalCode=rcqu19

@gcjerryusc Same here. I had friends of every race growing up in the South. Our generation did away with most racism, and now black people are bringing it back. We're all members of the Human race and need to act like it. We don't need all this fighting. Best wishes to you!

Bennett at the beginning warned Sue that if the mystery guest was male he would want to take her out afterward. However -- judging from the look on Ms. Oakland's face, I bet she wanted to take him out for drinks after the broadcast.

I don't know I have a feeling Michael Caine had already met his second wife by then but I could be wrong. According to his autobiography as soon as he had seen or he fell in love with her.

Peachey Carnehan or Harry Palmer? I can't decide, although I liked him as Harry Palmer so much that my most recent eyeglass prescription is set in Curry & Paxton "Yvan" tortoise frames from Ipcress Files! Michael's wife Shakira (Roxanne from The Man Who Would Be King) is still a great beauty.

You’re correct in thinking about comments on WML. However, another interpretation would be regarding comments on the KZfaq posting itself. Either way the Italian Job (1969) was an amazing movie

Michael Caine originally starred as British Secret Agent Harry Palmer in three films: "The IPCRESS File" (1965), "Funeral in Berlin" (1966), and "Billion Dollar Brain" (1967). He then starred as Harry Palmer in two more films: "Bullet to Beijing" (1995), and "Midnight in Saint Petersburg" (1996). The Harry Palmer films were produced by Harry Saltzman, who also produced the James Bond films, along with Albert R. Broccoli. Unlike the James Bond films, the Harry Palmer films had more of a downbeat tone.
