I'm with you: I Love Dorothy Kilgallen.. even though I've never met her. I love the Jefferson memorial, even though I can't have a 'relationship' with a statue. I love coarse ground pepper on almost every dish.. what I mean by that is.. 'shut up' to the negative twits, and go hang out on a site that values your low brow, depressing nonsense.

I also love arelene's dresses and I believe I have a few of them in my wardrobe, but I'm not real big on the sleeveless dresses as I don't like to shave my arms and pits. But they are lovely and some of my favorites.

@ToddSF (a little late in replying here) I think you need to place this in the context of the time and the phrase "best known for..." While he was a major TV star from 1949 to the mid 1950s, the proportion of people who owned a TV in the USA was still relatively small (9% in 1950 to around 80% in 1958). At the time this episode of WML aired, his show was on its last legs. To half of the audience at the time, they would know him more for his long radio career, although they would be aware that he was a major star in TV. TLDR; I think John is being fair in saying that his fame is divided between different mediums.

Rats. The only one you didn't mention was John, whom I loved as moderator, especially when someone's remark cracked him up. He was very erudite and witty. No one like him on tv today.

Yup. Rumor has it in a conversation with a guy that he opened his robe and dropped his salami on the coffee table with thud when the subject came up. Seeing him stand up and start to unbutton his jacket when asked if he was physically large had me rolling!

I've wondered about this myself. My best guess is that it has something to do with the introductions. Whoever sat in the 1st seat was usually introduced generically by the announcer the same way every time, a good reason to mix it up. On the other hand, Bennett always sitting at the end meant he would always be the one who got to introduce John Daly, as he did so well.

Perhaps they split up Arlene and Martin because they were wont to have impromptu conferences during the questioning (John Daly: "no conference has been called for"). I remember how the teachers in grammar school would split up two students who were talking to each other too often during class.

Alternating who gets introduced means neither gets top billing over the other. Bennet Cerf is always last but in return gets to introduce John Daly. This way everyone is equal. It's simlar idea to opening credits of a move or tv show with two big stars. They are listed alphabetically left to right in reading, but the last one is higher than the other so their name is first reading top to down. It makes everyone even.

I don't think most people got it.

To the best of my knowledge, any effect would be a negligible temporary cooling, rather than warming. Large volcanic explosions (Pinatubo, Krakatoa) that put lots of particulates into the atmosphere cause spectacular sunsets around the world and reflect some solar energy until they settle. I've never read of any sunset effects after atomic tests, nor any correlation between blizzards and volcanoes, let alone blizzards and atomic tests.

There were atomic and thermonuclear explosions in the atmosphere from 1945-1963. But the graph of warming temperatures is a jagged line that runs from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day. The main driver of climate change is heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide.

Bennet Cerf was very funny, and knowledgeable.

They're talking about someone who sings on Broadway, or in cabarets/nightclubs rather than a pop singer. Sometimes it's used to differentiate from theater vs. TV or movies. ETA: there are several episodes where they treat rock & roll music/musicians as little more than a passing fad.

When describing vocal style, "legitimate" includes a wide range of kinds of shows and songs, including opera, operetta, classical, traditional musical comedy, and more. It's mostly a question of vocal technique: is the singer projecting the voice using lung power, as every singer had to do before amplification? I'm not saying that mikes can never be associated with legit singing, as for broadcast, recording, or to overcome acoustic problems in a venue. But the kind of singing that relies on a microphone just inches from the lips in order to pick up the voice falls outside the legit category in my book.

The term "legitimate theater" has somewhat overlapping meaning but different roots; it derives from British stage censorship, when one had to get royal permission to open a theater, and (from the Theatres Act 1843 until 1968) any scripted show had to be submitted to the Lord Chamberlain's office a week before opening to get a license to perform it. This included plays, operas, and "book" musicals, but not vaudeville, music hall, and revue. So "legitimate" is here a rough synonym for "licensed."

A book, The Reporter who Knew Too Much, was written about her dogged pursuit of the identities of the assassins of John F. Kennedy. Apparently she got too close to unmasking them, and was warned not to continue in her pursuit, but she wouldn't back off. The villains made her death look like a substance overdose, stole her notes and documents, and their identities remain unknown. I am sorry I don't remember the name of the author of the book- authors ought to get credit for their work. An actor on one of the franchises of Law and Order has done some research about this topic. Rats. I can't think of his name either.

Do you know what explosion he is referencing? All I could find was about a nuclear bomb without its payload mistakenly dropped and exploding in South Carolina. The conventional explosion injured a family.

+Classique Liberal I believe they were referring to above ground testing of nuclear weapons. John Daly even referred to going out to Nevada a few years earlier to cover such a test that ended up being called off. He ended up bringing back someone from Las Vegas to be one of the WML challengers.

I wouldn't call that a joke. It was a legitimate query about the impact of the A-Bomb on weather! Some things never change - look at the polarization (pun intended?) about the misinformation/facts of Global Warming? We tend to stretch our acceptances of the unknown to make sense of the known. Who knows - maybe North Korea's testing of nukes is contributing to the melting of the polar caps? If only WML was on today, we would have a legitimate public forum to ask that question!

Neil Midkiff, interesting input, but I would never fathom a suggestion of nuclear winter to combat global warming. Yes, it would cool the Earth, but in its wake, eradicate countless flora and fauna. I would like to know from whom you heard this suggestion please? Was it off the cuff, or based off fact and data, skewed or real?
