That they are. It's why they're so addicting, I believe. They're just so much fun it's impossible not to keep watching them or, if one has the time, several in a row. Thoroughly entertaining and all about having fun watching. In fact, I think the best panelists are the ones who play the game with the intention of winning, but have lots of fun in the process.

I stumbled on these by accident really... ( Sinatra show ). But I am enjoying them. It is Steve Allen that has had me in stitches at least once per show, and I have only watched the ones with him in up to now..I like the guys style. I hope I get addicted enough to watch them all. Are they as funny without him in them? Either way a chance find that I am really glad about. Fun show : )

Steve Allen is my favorite of the comic panelists, but the show did continue for 13 years after he left. WML was a very consistently entertaining program, only dropping off somewhat in energy in its final couple of years after Dorothy Kilgallen died in 1965. And even the last couple of years were good, just not quite as good. You have around 759 episodes ahead of you assuming you get hooked-- which is not an infrequent occurrence when folks stumble on these shows unawares!

Second Contestant. The production staff never produced a gambit for Bennett Cerf, but here he seems to have generated one spontaneously. He got huge laughs in a line of questioning that generated technical yes answers, because John insisted on literal answers. However the yeses were on the wrong track.

First contestant . If I know my history of Georgia, the Talmadge she was married to was the one who became a senator in 1957 and who was involved in the Infamous "Three Governors Election" controversy of 1946 - 1947, an election problem so complicated that it produced three conflicting governors who all tried to occupy the Atlanta capitol at one time or another. Talmadge lost that one -- eventually --- but did serve as governor from the late 1940s into the mid-1950s.

First game. Hog apparel disagreement. Dorothy is always accused of being the humorless intense argumentative panelist on WML -- but Arlene with noticeable regularity could and did get in her licks in disagreements with John . The most intense disagreement I ever saw involving Arlene and John's definitions happened about 3 - 4 years into the future, oddly enough over a hog breeder from North Carolina. Arlene was also wrong in that disagreement over definitions.

I will defend John's decision. She asked if the animal had a coat, and we don't think of pigs as having a coat, we think of pigs as having skin.

Arlene really lobbied hard to get yes answers if she sensed there was any wiggle room. She was successful often enough to warrant continuing to try it. Anyway, you can make coats (and footballs) out of pigskin, but to say that pigs have coats would not be kosher. :-)

The first guest's husband, then the governor of Georgia, was later US Sen. Herman Talmadge, who served on the Senate Watergate Committee in 1973. His father, Eugene Talmadge, was governor of Georgia before him and was mentioned as such by Will Rogers in a 1935 broadcast that I heard many years ago on an LP entitled The Wit and Wisdom of Will Rogers: "Governor Talmadge, down in Georgia, ..."
@soulierinvestments
@soulierinvestments 9 жыл бұрын
I remember Talmadge on the Watergate Committee. The first Republican senator elected from Georgia in ages defeated H T in 1980. Governor Eugene Talmadge was involved I think in 1946 in a complicated hotly-contested governor's election that resulted in several competing governors taking office at the same time, leading to a bunch of acrimonious law suits. Fred Allen made some jokes about the situation in his radio program.

Bennett said, "I'm still trying to figure out what good a garter is that doesn't hold anything up." Since it was revealed during questioning that the contestant only made the garters in one color -- I'd bet dollars to doughnuts the color was blue to fulfill the old rhyme, "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." It was thought that for good luck in the marriage, the bride needed to wear an item that fulfilled each of those categories, so a garter with blue on it would do that. I also know that at many weddings, after the bride through her bouquet for one of the women present to catch, the groom used to throw the garter for one of the men to catch. At least the groom through the garter at weddings later on -- I was a year old in 1953, so it's possible that the garter-throwing custom hadn't begun yet.

I never heard the audience as vocal about what was going on stage as I did tonight. I don't remember John ever really admonishing them as he did at about 17:35. I wonder if in the early this posed a problem and the producer's did something about it thereafter?

I see it as John is the Star of the Show, the panel are supporting actors, the MG is tonight's Guest Star and the contestants are minor roles in the show. The audience are purley background actors, they should only be a part of the whole but never take over. It's fun when they laugh and applaud and you notice it's a live audience but they must do their part and not break their "contract". Helping the panel with sounds of yes/no I think is not ok. The floor manager should attend to these behaviours and cue them right. If I am not mistaken; on "You Bet Your Life" Groucho Marx used to say "And please, no help from the audience!" in a playful way but with some sternness.

Joe Postove Ah, but sometimes the audience reaction is priceless! I remember how the laughter from the audience really made a round, such as the man who repaired zippers, and the operator of a nudist park. On the other hand, those audience members who booed the director of the IRS gave the show away to Bennett.

Johan Bengtsson Groucho's "No help from the studio audience" on YBYL was purely with respect to the quiz questions. It wasn't meant playfully at all-- if someone from the audience said the answer to a question audibly, the question would have had to be thrown out.

Here are the other "Free Wild Guess Win", from www.tv.com "FREE WILD GUESS WIN HISTORY FOR WHAT'S MY LINE? - CBS 1950 - 1955 "Wild Guesses" or "Free Guesses" were won on the following 9 episodes: EARLY LOST EPISODE - MOST LIKELY EPISODE #8 of May 24, 1950 - "Motorcycle Cop" - Arlene Francis said the following in a December 20, 1952 TV DIGEST (Philadelphia) article: "Before the questioning begins, the panelists are allowed, of course, a 'wild guess.' Some are pretty wild, but on two occasions we hit the target right off. I made the first correct 'wild guess' on the show, when I identified a motorcycle cop. I even said his name might be Maloney. How'd I do it? I once was stopped by a motorcycle cop named Maloney and I never forgot his name." EARLY LOST EPISODE - MOST LIKELY EPISODE #16 of September 13, 1950 - "Atomic Scientist" - Arlene Francis said the following in a December 20, 1952 TV DIGEST (Philadelphia) article: "Miss Kilgallen correctly wild-guessed an atomic scientist, because she said, 'If I were casting a play, he'd be just right for the part.'" This win was also mentioned on EPISODE #216. One contestant on EPISODE #16 of September 13, 1950 is an "Atomic Engineer." EARLY LOST EPISODE - MOST LIKELY EPISODE #30 of December 24, 1950 - "Santa Claus" - This win was mentioned on EPISODE #216. Winning panelist unknown. EPISODE #120 of September 14, 1952 Arlene Francis wins with a guess of "Football Player" for Tommy Kalmanir. EPISODE #149 of April 5, 1953 Arlene Francis wins with a guess of "Trapeze Performer" for Sara Marlowe. EPISODE #175 of October 4, 1953 Dorothy Kilgallen wins with a guess of "Umpire" for Ed Hurley. EPISODE #216 of July 18, 1954 Arlene Francis wins with a guess of "Lifeguard" for Carol Rubin. EPISODE #224 of September 12, 1954 Bennett Cerf wins with a guess of "Dramatic Coach" for Tala Forman. EPISODE #248 of March 6, 1955 Bennett Cerf wins with a guess of "I think he fixes those one-armed bandits so that every one man in a million gets the jackpot" for Walt Hollingsworth, a contestant who "Repairs Slot Machines." Tally of wins: Arlene Francis won 4 times. Dorothy Kilgallen won 2 times. Bennett Cerf won 2 times. Unknown - 1 time. This "Free Wild Guess" game feature was discontinued after tonight's EPISODE #253 of April 17, 1955. Three guesses were won on early shows that are lost to history. I have enjoyed these programs since childhood in the 50s, but it is rather sad that none of Dorothy's friends ever questioned her death or the bogus coroner's report, which was controlled at the time by the mafia.

You can tell this show is still in its rough form. The walking in front of the panel and the wild guesses. This being the third time a wild guess knocked out a contestant, which I'm sure the producers never wanted to have happen. Eventually both of these activities would be dropped because they added little to the show and could even amputate it.

Although in this instance, it came to the rescue in the last segment, which they really didn't have time for. John even got to talk to the young lady for a moment.But, of course, without the earlier walk-boys and guesses, they would have had enough time for the last contestant.

25:30 Dorothy's hairdo makes her look like Betty Boop. I was never thrilled with 50s hairdos; OTOH I wasn't born until 1956 and so I wasn't of an age to appreciate them. I rather preferred the straight-hair and short-hair looks in the 60s -- not the bouffant hairdos but the straight hair.

John Daly plugged the radio version of WML at the end of the program. I suppose in 1953, there were still households with radios and no television. Even so, I can't imagine a primetime radio version of WML would have that many listeners. It seems odd to me that the first radio version of WML was broadcast on Tuesday nights by NBC radio, starting on May 20, 1952. The radio program was subsequently broadcast live by CBS Radio on Wednesday nights at 8:00 PM beginning in September 1952 and continued until its last broadcast on July 1, 1953. So it was on the radio for about 15 months in 1952-53. It had the same panel and moderator as the TV version. I read that it had two mystery guests who never appeared on the TV version, Marlon Brando and Marlene Dietrich. They must have had a voiceover announcer who read the profession of each contestant and the identity of each mystery guest so only the radio audience could hear it, and if there was a studio audience for the radio show, they probably could have held up a large card with the secret information so that the studio audience could see it. I suspect that by July 1953, so many U.S. households had a television that games shows, dramas and situation comedies on the radio had become quite rare.

I absolutely loved the circus and the elephants were some of my favorite to watch. Anyone with any sense knows that the large circuses took great care of their animals most of the time. Sarah Brandy Peters Not true, Sarah. While there were audio-only broadcasts of the TV shows later (I believe mainly for the armed forces), first there was a totally separate radio series in 1952-53. Not only did the show start out with a different sponsor (Philip Morris), airing on a different night of the week (Wednesdays), but it didn't even start out on the same NETWORK as the TV show! When the TV sponsor, Jules Monetenier, decided to take on the radio series, too, the show was moved from NBC to CBS. Very little of this 1952-53 series has surfaced. More copies are floating around of the later radio broadcasts of the TV shows-- naturally, since no one cares about those!

Sarah Brandy Peters I only learned about the WML radio series myself in the course of running this KZfaq channel and the Facebook group! :) Interestingly, the radio versions of YBYL, while they were the audio from the TV shows, were often edited substantially differently in order to remove visually oriented bits that wouldn't play on radio. There are even contestants that appear only on the radio or only on the TV version of the same shows!

With no modesty :>) I do have to say that I am good with dates. I remember August 27th, 1964 for three reasons. Lyndon Johnson was nominated for president, Gracie Allen, died, and it is the birthday of a close friend. When I was 6 years old my parents gave me a book about the presidents. People think it's something special that I can name them frontwards and backwards and the dates of their presidency (which is usually easy). It wasn't until later that I became a fanatic about American history. Love it. I think everyone should. It's really enjoyable.

Joe Postove Interesting. Going back, say, 20 years I used to have a decent memory for dates that pertained to the very specific subject areas I was obsessed with (notably, Burns & Allen), but now, not so much! Gracie Allen's real birth date is still, I believe, somewhat impossible to prove, but the best evidence available indicates she was born in 1894, two years *before* George. But I've seen several different years anywhere from 1894 to 1906 given (1906 being Gracie's choice when she was alive).
