+gcjerryusc I watch KZfaq. Let my cable go in 2008 & never looked back. TV got to be so filthy that I couldn't stand it anymore. My favorite shows are this one, of course, & black & white movies from the 40's & 50's. They're not filled w/the nastiness of what passes for entertainment today.

+Lucinda Sommer I know what you mean. I haven't had cable since August 1, 1998. I watch two shows on the CBS website (NCIS and NCIS-New Orleans) and the rest of the time I watch old television shows. And I only watch while I am eating a meal so I multi-task rather than sitting mindlessly watching something. If Monk was still on, I'd watch that. If they come back with another season of 24, I'll watch that. Other than sports, those are the only programs I found interesting since I gave up cable.

I had no idea Shelley could sing, and what a voice! Besides that, she was one of the more interesting celebrities to be on the show because she didn’t just answer in boring one-note sounds but created a voice and actually spoke in it! Sometimes when actors or actresses come on and are boring, I think, “ you’re an actor; so act!”

@WhatsMyLine
@WhatsMyLine 8 жыл бұрын
+poetcomic1 Yes, I do. I wish they had just used the time to do a brief interview after the segments, with both the mystery guests and the regular guests, but usually they get the bum's rush off the stage as soon as the segments are over. All to squeeze in one last rushed round that did a disservice to these final contestants. I completely agree!
@ToddSF
@ToddSF 8 жыл бұрын
I certainly agree. When they have just two or three minutes left it's ridiculous to try to squeeze in a final contestant. That's one reason I dislike the time they waste doing the "walk of shame" and the wild guesses for the first two contestants. I think WML was much better after they stopped doing that. Also, I think one question per panelist in rotation during the Mystery Guest segment also helped move things along. Of course, even after those changes were in place, timing could still be "off" to the point that they ended up with three minutes to fill at the end . . . .

yes, but you have to remember this was the early days of television and they were still learning. today, a show could look back at a lot of shows and see how they solved a problem. in 1955, all they had to get ideas from was radio, theater or vaudeville. they probably didnt do an interview because no one had thought of it yet.
@NoobsShadow
@NoobsShadow 5 жыл бұрын
I do feel bad for the third guest not getting as much time usually. But you have to remember it's not like nowadays. Guests may be from out of town and this is their only shot to get on TV. They are probably happy just for a few minutes and some prize money. Which is usually all 50$ since time runs out. The problem is they often waste too much time on the first 2 guests. You can't really trim or rush the special mystery guest since they are what a lot of people are tuning in to see.

+Johan Bengtsson The United States is primarily a nation of immigrants, mostly from Europe. Of course there were native Americans (who alao are the origin of the names of many states, cities and villages) here when the Europeans arrived and there were people brought here against their will. And when the west coast of the United States was settled, immigrants came here from China, Japan, the Philippines and later from Korea and SE Asia. And more recently we are seeing immigration from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Because Europeans came first, most foreign place names either come from Europe, with another group of Biblical place names (as most of the immigrants were at least nominally Christian) and some names reflecting a neo-classical period of American history in the late 18th and early 19th century. The Dutch heritage of New York can be seen, as well as many names from places in the British Isles. But there is also examples from Spain and its American colonies, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Egypt, Poland, Denmark, Arabia, Ukraine, Syria and the Czech Republic. Just taking my home state of New York (which itself is based on the name of an English city, we have Babylon, Jericho, Syracuse, Rome, Greece, Ithaca, Marathon, Mexico, Warsaw, Leicester, Amsterdam, Belfast, Cuba, Nineveh, Panama, New Berlin, Oxford, Smyrna, Peru, Ghent, Delhi, Tivoli, Angola, Eden, Holland, Derby, Zoar, Geneva, Bergen, Corfu, Elba, Athens, Cairo, Troy, Poland, Antwerp, Carthage, New Utrecht, Copenhagen, Port Leyden, Turin, Lima, Avon, Brighton, Bethpage, Harlem, Verona, Jordan, Liverpool, Cardiff, Memphis, Mycenae, Naples, Cornwall, Goshen, Medina, Nassau, Potsdam, Madrid, Corinth, Galway, Rotterdam, Odessa, Lodi, Waterloo, Bath, Bohemia, Mount Sinai, Flanders, Phoenicia, Argyle, Cambridge, Greenwich, Shusan, Palmyra, Macedon, Chester, Dresden, and Dundee. New York was one of the first areas of the United States settled by Europeans. But every state reflects its own history in the names of its cities and towns. Some areas are more German, some are more Scandinavian, some have more French influence. And my list only included cities and villages named after cities and countries on the other side of the Atlantic. Another extensive list could be generated of places named in honor of foreign people. Ideally, the United States of America is a mixture of people from every country of the world who came in search of an ideal: that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these rights are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To be sure, ideals are difficult to live up to, and sometimes we have done a better job of it than others during our 240+ year history as a nation. But if anyone hates America, in a way they hate themselves, because we are them and the best of their hopes and dreams. And to speak specifically to you, Johan, that's why you will find a place named Sweden or New Sweden in 8 different states, a Swedesboro in New Jersey, a Stockholm in seven different states, a Malmo in Nebraska, an Upsala in Minnesota, an Upsala College in New York and New Jersey from 1893-1995 founded by the Swedish-American Augustana Synod of the Lutheran Church, a Lund in 6 different states, and a Skane and a Karlstad in Minnesota. And you may have some distant (or not so distant) relatives here. While Minnesota or New Jersey are the most likely places, (former American football player and coach Phil Bengtson was born in Minnesota), American artist Billy Al Bengtson was born in Kansas and lives in California. And no doubt you a search of various directories of people would find many Bengtsons and Bengtssons in the United States. According to Ancestry.com, there were 460 Bengston families recorded in the 1920 United States census (nearly 1/3 in Minnesota) and 22 more Bengtsson families. And according to the surname data base, the name is derived from one of the earliest recorded surnames in history, due to the popularity of St. Benedict in the 6th century and following. Apparently people named Benson (but more often English), Bankson and Bankston may also have originally been named Bengtsson somewhere in their lineage. Their are three villages in the U.S. named Bankston (Iowa, Alabama and Mississippi). So you come from a rich heritage, my friend.

I think people have been pretty much the same with slight differences but the entertainers of the past knew the art of communicating to the point where there was something cute about them. But the masses were not like this and that is why they loved them so much too. Because people hide most of themselves which can get pretty dull. But it’s in everybody it’s just a matter of waking it up and letting it roll.

Comments left on prior version of this video: ToddSF 94109 4 months ago (edited) So the first contestant was from Acapulco and Fred Allen's "wild guess" at the beginning is "I think she's a tortilla inspector at a Mexican Howard Johnson's". I think that was rather a rude attempt at comedy. Then, too, Bennett actually loused up his rather mannerless joke about the weather prediction in Acapulco. The old joke isn't "Cold today, hot tamale", it's supposed to be "Chili today, hot tamale". Every school kid who ever grew up in Southern California has heard that joke at one point or another -- even my mother knew it. However, it's the sort of joke that a gringo ought to keep to himself, though, when he's speaking to a visitor from Mexico such as Sra. Bárcenas. What's My Line? 4 months ago +ToddSF 94109 I was very disappointed to see Groucho use this joke on an episode of YBYL once. . . but at least Groucho quoted the line correctly! For a guy who made it a personal crusade to bring more humor into people's lives, Bennett's inability to tell the simplest of jokes properly is staggering. MattTheSaiyan 4 months ago Ha ha at all the worm jokes in this episode. Jimmy Flanagan 7 months ago Shelley Winters is one of the most underated star of the 40s and 50s Miko Sharp 4 months ago +Jimmy Flanagan That's true! And in 60s She still looks marvelous, like the charming, sentimental lady in Lolita. hopicard 1 year ago Fred Allen very funny! But what does Bennett Cerf say at 9:45? "Cold today, hot ..."? What's My Line? 1 year ago It's a pun on the weather report: "Cold today, hot tamale", a typically groan-worthy Bennett Cerf pun. Actually, I doubt he came up with it himself, since I've also heard Groucho use a variation many times on You Bet Your Life, but he ups the pun factor to "Chile today, hot tamale" (Chile is a pun on the South American country). I love Bennett Cerf, and I love his sense of humor, but those puns. My goodness. At least John Charles Daly's pseudo-exasperated responses to Bennett's puns are always funny. hopicard 1 year ago +What's My Line? Ah, thanks! :) Johan Bengtsson 9 months ago (edited) My goodness so slim Shelley Winters was in 1955! Not at all the way she looked in "The Poseidon Adventure". There's a Mexico, Missouri, for example, and a Denmark, Minnesota, just to name two. There's a California, Pennsylvania, and a Washington, Pennsylvania. Then there are places named after foreign cities, such as Cairo, Illinois (except they pronounce it "KAY-ro"); Athens, Georgia; Alexandria, Virginia; Paris, Idaho; Lisbon, Connecticut and Lisbon, Ohio; Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; York, Pennsylvanica; and the list goes on and on. It's a huge list and I certainly don't know all of them. City and town names are frequently duplicated from state to state which is why you have to put the name of the U.S. state after the town or city. We're a big country with lots of towns, cities, boroughs and counties that needed names and many of them were named after other places -- and it can be confusing. If someone in Minnesota says, "I'm going to Stockholm tomorrow," they might actually mean they're driving to the community of Stockholm, Minnesota and the same thing would apply if someone said they were going to Oslo, because there is also an Oslo, Minnesota. Many times, these names were chosen by immigrants who got the places settled -- they often named a new locale in the U.S. after the place they came from in the "old country". Johan Bengtsson 4 months ago (edited) +ToddSF 94109 That was very interesting to read and learn. I had no idea it was so frequent with "foreign" names on towns and cities. But a bit confusing too I guess. When you wrote "Athens, Georgia" it reminded me of a funny (for me anyway!) story I read some years ago. When Queen Frederica of Greece was on a visit to the U.S in the 60's she had to phone her husband who was sick. She was staying at a hotel and picked up the phone: - Could you give me Athens? - Athens Georgia or Athens Ohio? - No, Athens Greece! - But that's Europe. I'll give you International. - I want to speak to the king. - Which king? - There is only one. Personal call! - Who's calling? - The Queen of the Hellenes. - But that's a ship, isn't it? - Yes, you are right. Skip it! So she gave up. :) joed596 6 months ago thank you Quan Dang 1 year ago Shelley Winter is a winner !!!

People often comment how civil and polite the panel is on WML. Having been born in 1964, a short few years from some of these episodes, I have a different perspective. This is not nearly as rude as some comments I would hear as a Mexican American (or Cuban American) in the mid 70s. At the same time these were supposed to be people with "class" and "grace". Sad really that this type of "humor" was acceptable.

The one thing I did not like about this show is when John let the panel have those conferences. Sometimes it ruins the game for the contestant like it did with the woman who ran the boat. Bennet did just like he always does when he needs to keep his mouth shut.

You notice that the entertainers in recent years have cashed in on the fad of having no personality is cool and if you do your a fake. Now take a look at most people their imitating this way of behavior. So many others around the world do have a personality and they have energy and manners . But our movies and tv shows are filled with the former. This trend will someday come to pass. And then all people will finally be themselves and then look out. In other words the dawning of the New World is not just a matter of technology and proper care for all of its citizens but it also means a change of behavior. Changing out of what isn’t really them into what has been their true selves all this time.

One of the most wonderful things is to see people who started businesses that we still use today. Even though most of them are just names now, sold out and butchered by the Chinese, it's nice to see the origins of daily use items, like a westclox. Such better times. (pun)

It wasn’t fair. Bennett Cerf knew how Red Buttons' jacket sounded when it brushed against his trousers because he'd had dinner with him 6 months prior. He could recognize Clark Gable’s sneeze. He knew where everyone in show business was at any given moment. The first round should have been a Cerf-less round.
