SaveThe TPC 60s fashion choices aside, this was a very strong period for Dorothy. She's together, ultra sharp, and a much more relaxed "member of the gang" than she was in the 50s.

I used to watch Match Game with my son before he went to school and I went to work. It was so much fun. Charles Nelson Reilly was entertaining in his banter with the other panel members. Watching the show put us in a good mood for school and work.

"If I can't take...my coffee break..." CNR was hilarious at the 1974 Tonys, which you can find on KZfaq, one of the funniest performances ever on the Tonys, and all done at a frantic pace as a solo with orchestra. Loved him on Match Game. And yet he was also an excellent acting teacher, and director ("Belle of Amherst" on B'way). I wish Charles had remained with us much longer.

I vividly remember him on Match Game!! He was a riot with Brett and Richard!

I remember him as the mail room clerk in How to Succeed in Business--He was great--playing against Robert Morse. I think those comedic villainous roles must require an incredible amount of talent.

Charles Nelson Reilly is really interesting. People think of him as a "Paul Lynde" type who is really out there without saying the words (not that he could or would). Both men were stage trained actors who, while making loads of dough, are remembered for their "nance" act on a couple of game shows. But a week of "Squares" or "Matchgame" probably paid more than months in a Broadway production. I loved Paul Lynde on Hollywood Squares, but I will always remember him as the Dad in Bye Bye Birdie. Both deserve a fair and total review of their work, which they probably will never get.

Joe Postove Reilly was also an accomplished stage director. It bugs me when people one dimensionalize him and Paul Lynde, but I suppose they did play into that with their eyes wide open.

***** I checked IMDb to confirm my suspicion that this was Charles Nelson Reilly's very first appearance on a game show. Indeed it was, but I was surprised to discover that apparently quite a number of years passed before his second game show gig. Despite his apparent nervousness (on which even John comments at the end of the episode), he did quite well as a panelist, I thought, and I'm surprised that he never appeared on WML again. I had expected to find that this was his "discovery" episode that launched him on his long association with Goodson-Todman. Apparently not. Joe Postove I was just thinking about that. Charles Nelson Reilly seemed to be better adjusted to his later career path than Lynde was, but he also had won a Tony award (as mentioned in the intro here) and did other things besides the game show circuit and sitcoms.

I'd guess he was in Hollywood helping with post-production (perhaps re-dubbing dialog lines) on Hitchcock's "Marnie", released in summer 1964.

Very true-- it definitely happened more than once. Usually what Bennett got wrong was the pronunciation of the name "Croghan", which he often said with a hard "g" sound. It was supposed to be pronounced "crowan". :)

I don't know if it *never* happened, but certainly, the style of the show was for the contestants to be referred to formally. John went back and forth on whether he referred to the panelists by their first or last names, but the contestants were virtually always referred to by last name. I hadn't noticed Reilly breaking this pattern-- good catch.

Lilly Beans Yep. I'm aware of it EVERY WEEK.....and have been for the last fourteen years!! So much so, I end up looking at the red line under the KZfaq clip and worrying ON HIS BEHALF. I think it makes sense when part of an act; not so much in everyday life. I've also seen some singing groups (Pointer Sisters and Martha & the Vandellas come to mind) that have a common color scheme and pattern but the individual dress style varies to flatter the individual wearing it. Joe Postove I'm just hinting at the 18th century's "Rococo" or "Late Baroque" style, in design. Everything, from furniture to hairstyle was affected by it, but mainly made for, and used by the upper classes. Very ornamental, rich decorations, flowers, laces, and romantic interieurs. Not that bad, and some of the furniture were absolutely beautiful. But in particular ways it went too far. Like those powdered wigs, and other ridiculous things. The curtains had several layers, often with laces, etc.

stlmopoet Marge? Wow! ;) I admit it. I don't like the 60's hairstyle at all, and I find the rococo style with rice-powdered wigs ridiculous too. Some could wear it, but they were few. As you can see of another comment on this page, I think "our Dorothy" looked good with her hairstyle (and perhaps her mood) the last 3-4 episodes. I'm old enough to remember my cousins hair in the 60's, and yiiikes!

Krista Krista Krista ... I've been a handful of episodes behind you for months now (or years, from their perspective) and you get so upset with JC(PC)D almost every episode when he flips the cards! Don't skip segments for something so silly. You will feel so much better if you stop approaching WML? as a game show and accept it as pure, wonderful entertainment. Not to mention a special opportunity to travel back in time! Does he talk too much at times? Yes. Does he flip those darned cards too much? Sure. But please try to look past that and just appreciate the beauty of our show. You've watched 15 years of it now! You know and love all the regulars. They are like family now. Right? So enjoy them while we have them. :) And remember: the challengers all get the $50 regardless of the outcome of the questioning. They're just there for the fun too.
