Not a fan of the new home page mostly because of color. Using so much beige and white is hard on my eyes. I really miss the ability to chose colors. I did so much better with the turquoise, purple and deep gray.

Ancestry member trees are just like records in that you need to review the presented information and come to a conclusion about whether it makes 'sense'. You can temporarily add details/individuals from an Ancestry tree and then delete as needed if it doesn't pan out to be a logical 'line'. Don't be too reluctant to use Ancestry trees that may be lacking in supporting records [but those are the 'best' to consider]. Sometimes you can find some great clues about additional/unknown siblings and spouses that way.

In the search I feel it's time that other named countries are added. It's long since the options no longer fit. You've got UK and Ireland you've got United States plus other countries, but then everything else is lumped under 'other countries'. I have been paying a full subscription for years and believe that it should allow me options to choose a specific country of my choosing. I.e. Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad etc Thank you

You can do that. Use the ANY field on the search form. Type the name of the country and select from the type-ahead list. Mark it as EXACT. This will limit your search results only to those records that have that location listed in them.

As it's Black History Month, please provide an appropriate method of marking a relationship between enslaved persons and their enslaver(s). While it is at times a genetic connection, it's absurd to still have to list enslaved persons as 'children' of the enslaver to document these connections. If we're concerned enough to place the records in front of the pay wall, let's be concerned enough to make it easier for descendants and those researching on their behalf to better record their ancestors' relationships.
@CristaCowan
@CristaCowan 2 жыл бұрын
Ancestry has a method for marking relationships between enslaved and enslavers. I would never list them as children (unless there is a proven genetic relationship). I use Web Links to link them together in a non-familial relationship. Then, I use the MyTreeTags feature to clearly label the enslaver and the enslaved as such for others who are viewing my tree.

What I miss about the new homepage that did NOT transfer is the little box with the links to the US Census by year. Glad to be on the new homepage and, overall, really like it. Feels more modern, etc. I'm a little surprised at how little branding is on the homepage, though, and how monochrome it is. It's almost hard to know that you're on an Ancestry page. Three specific pieces of feedback on the DNA tile: (1) I really like seeing the most recent/newest matches; (2) I'd like to be able to select which DNA test is being displayed (similar to the way you can select trees on the Discoveries tile; and (3) it would be helpful to display the shared cMs for each of the newest matches--almost all are just "distant cousin" and there are no clues as to which to take action on from the tile. Hope that getting everyone on the same homepage simplifies things for Ancestry and clears the way for new functionality in the future!

I think the family or someone should have the option to create a "We Remember" if they want. It should be their choice, not automatically. I have 2 questions that don't actually relate to this video, but I will ask them anyway. DNA Circles was also a very useful tool. I love Thrulines, but why is it an either/or with them? Why can't we have both? We all get different bits of DNA, and it was very helpful to see who else was descended from a particular ancestor, even if we weren't matches with that cousin. My second question is about Thrulines: Is there any plan to add 6th great-grandparents? That would also be a big help. Thanks for the great videos!
@CristaCowan
@CristaCowan 2 жыл бұрын
There is no plan to bring Circles back. There were a few issues with them. The first is that it showed you information about people who did not share DNA with you. Privacy is a pillar of how Ancestry does business. So, it is important to us to only share information from other users who have agreed to have that information shared. As for ThruLines, there are also no plans to add 6th great-grandparents. This is, primarily, because it is almost impossible at that distance of a relationship to have any level of confidence that the DNA you share with another match came from that set of relatives.
@phillipmoore9012
@phillipmoore9012 2 жыл бұрын
@@CristaCowan Yes, one may or may not share DNA correctly, or at all, to 6th-GGP, but that is also true at 5th-GGP. When matches to more than one siblings of a 5th-GGP are found and can be adequately shown by record your answer isn't sufficient. I understand Ancestry is your job and necessary to defend, but I find the answer "sloppy". I'm sure this has been debated at Ancestry until likely until some folks are tired of it. I think letting us view them with perhaps a warning that the match may not be correct would be better. Incorrect family trees posted on Ancestry is a much bigger issue when I look at ThruLines. While I am here, why can't I mark a person as 6th-cousin under "Add relationship" when I've just reviewed that line on ThruLines? Very inconsistent reasoning. When I find a line is correct it isn't up to Ancestry to decide if 6th cousin "isn't good enough".
@phillipmoore9012
@phillipmoore9012 2 жыл бұрын
Right after I posted this I went to ThruLines and found a bull sh*t line which posts an ancestral cousin's mother as his wife; then the DNA runs off into nonsense and tries to reconnect to a son of my 5th-GGP who never existed. The DNA is correct. She is 6th cousin, she is correct on my tree. But then, I can't add her as 6th-cousin under "Add relationship". Ancestry keeps sending me questionnaires to post, "yeah, I give this a five" I like ThruLines, excellent idea, but come on.........!

Find a Grave can be valuable, but problematic. I initially assumed that the data on there was all obtained from the Memorial Inscription, and thus fact. However it appears that some researchers add additional information to a page about the family which is what they BELIEVE but isn't necessarily correct. And, as in Ancestry family trees, false information continues to be shared, with many fellow researchers believing it to be correct. I think Find A Grave should make it clear which information has been taken from the Menorial Inscription and which additional information has been added by other contributors

@Laurel Sayer Find a Grave Memorials are created by people like you and I about an ancestor and when you create the Memorial it gets posted. Then if you request a photo someone within the area of the Cemetery goes and photographs the Headstone if they take the task and submits it to the requester/creator of the memorial. The person that created the memorial will add the info they know of that person usually a Family Member that lives in another state or country. Some researchers just photographing Cemetery Headstones within their state or town may go the extra mile to find some info about that person thru records and Newspapers and post and others just post the headstone. I am one of those people that photograph Cemetery Headstones upon request only in my state but I do not go the extra mile as it is time consuming but will post the name of the Cemetery, Town and State. If there is a Memorial on Fiand a Grave and you know the info may be incorrect, you can suggest the edits and it is up to the creator of the Memorial if they want to take your info or deny it. Some will deny thinking you are incorrect so it stays that way and many keep copying the same errors. Been there. Had to prove to someone thru emails they were incorrect however they choose to leave it as is. So the best thing is take the info and do your own research.
@CristaCowan

Like all records, users can evaluate the evidence for themselves on Find A Grave. If there is an image of a tombstone they can determine if the information on the memorial matches. Of course, just because it is (literally) carved in stone, also does not make the information true. But, it does add to the body of evidence family historians can collect to correlate in order to come to the truth.

I like the new font used on Ancestry.. Also.. there's a message saying that "Quick Links will soon be Gone" (from the main page), but as long as they'e still in the "Search" section, I suppose it's no big deal. The one thing that has been happening for eons that I wish they could figure out is going to Newspapers and/or Fold3, and where it says "Send this info to Ancestry".. when you do it that way, a majority of the military documents or newspaper articles are literally impossible for people to read. Seriously.. I've clipped a crystal clear newspaper article off newspapers and used the "Send to Ancestry" option.. and when it shows up on there, it goes from a beautiful clear piece of journalism to a blurry blob the size of a postage stamp. It's better to clip the items yourself and add them in the Gallery so everyone can actually read them. I do know that they're working on it, ....but it ain't working yet".. I do enjoy ThruLines and am glad they added a 5th Generation. Thanks for the update & I'm looking forward to Roots Tech 2022! 😊

One photo I added has been added to 87 trees on Ancestry--it was the only photo ever taken of that particular Irish father of my 80 year old friend's grandfather. I, like many other people, like to denote my direct ancestors by placing their name in all caps. Oftentimes, I don’t have a headshot and other times I do. I create icons that I use where the headshot would go to show things that I find significant, such as: DNA proven ancestor icon, a link to a DNA match icon, DNA match icon, immigrant ancestor icon, etc. I would really love to do both and I think a very easy solution to do this would be for Ancestry to provide a frame around the headshot and allow us as users to change the color of the thick frame. This frame could include tiny text to denote things such as DNA proven ancestor DNA link etc. The tags are great, but the instant visual is much easier for me. I would also like to have the option for users to change the color of the text of the name of the person so that you could denote different lines or use it for whatever purpose one would like to.

It is less applicable to census records, but I'd love some UI/UX update to the Sources list on the profile where we could visibly tag each source as to whether the person is the primary (self) or a relation on the record. For example, many BMD collections it is time consuming to click into each card to find which link is for the individual's personal event vs. one for their children and they are listed as a parent. The connecting lines back to associated facts can sometimes help, but hard to scroll and follow when you have a long list from the same source/DB. Hope that makes some sense. 😊

I would really like to see a feature similar to 23 and me. Instead of "shared matches" - many would like to see how our matches are related to each other. This can sometimes be seen in Thrulines when a parent/child test. Also seen when siblings or first cousins. Ancestry knows that two of your matches are a parent/child but you cannot easily determine that from "shared matches" - And "shared matches" can trip people up. A "shared match" doesn't always mean that two of them are related to each other. You have to ask your match if the other person is a match to them.

@@CristaCowan I agree with both statements if the requirements for TL are not met. But TL can show you a relationship between you and two or more of your matches that are at the other end of that single TL. For example I have seen quite a few TLs that show a parent/child. Sometimes siblings that have different names but each have the same parents in their tree. Other relationships between DNA matches (not just to you) are quite often displayed in a TL. What I don't see (and at that point don't need to know) is the cms between them. I would hate to see that go away because as a search angel, relationships between matches, not the shared cms, are important to our work.

I have a question but it isn't related to this video. I have been working mostly off of FamilySearch to build my tree. What are the benefits of building your tree on Ancestry? Can you move the tree over from FamilySearch or each one individually? Do you build both trees together? What are some tips to get started working in Ancestry? How did you get involved with family history work?
@CristaCowan
@CristaCowan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bridget - Thanks for asking some great questions. The primary benefit of building your tree on Ancestry is that it is fully in your control. On FS, you are working off a "wiki" tree that anyone can change at any time. I keep my primary tree on Ancestry. I transfer information to FS as needed to share that information there. If you have your Ancestry account through the Partner Access program at FS, transferring information from one to the other is fairly simple. If you have an LDS-Ancestry account, you can go to TREES on Ancestry and there is an option there to download your tree from FS. This will bring over a full four generations of your ancestors. You can then go to each "end of line" ancestor in your Ancestry tree and bring over four more generations. I wouldn't suggest doing more than that without verifying that the FS data you are copying over is accurate because (as I said earlier) anyone can change it at any time. If you are interested in learning more about how I got started in family history, I would love to have you join me over on Instagram. I have shared that story in a few posts.

Will there be a way to custom order tree tags so the ones you use the most can be at the top and in the order you want them? Will we be able to see more of the tags under the name on the profile instead of just 3? Is there a way to change that? Can there be an option to lock the tree tag panel to the profile. If I have a second window open reviewing hints and refresh the first window to see the new info I loose the tree panel and have to open it and then edit to see all my custom tags which is annoying. @CristaCowan 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of questions, Vickilee. I'll try to answer them all. 1. The widget should be showing you birth, marriage, and death events based on your phone time. I'll look into that further. 2. There is not currently a way to sort the custom MyTreeTags. I will submit that as a request for a possible enhancement. 3. There isn't really enough space to show more than 3 of the tags on the person profile page without causing some other issues. 4. Ancestry reduced the tree hints to 3 a while ago. Too many people were just copying all of the information from other trees without using some critical thought. You can still do a search from your tree and see all the trees with that person in it. 5. Both MyTreeTags and Hints use the same side panel workspace. So refreshing will always reset it. 6. It would be great to be able to tag an ancestor as tentative. Or a name as tentative or alternative so that it isn't forgotten when i hit a deadend.

You can do this with the MyTreeTags feature. If you are not familiar with that you can do a search here on the channel to watch a video explaining how to use them.

The 'alternative name' option under the 'profile name field' is missing and adding the name under the 'add' field results in you just changing the name rather than adding an alternative name

When you are on the profile page of a person in your tree on the FACTS tab, you will see an ADD button at the top of the facts column. Click that and select NAME. Add the alternate name. You then decide if you want that name to be preferred or alternate by either checking the "preferred" box or not.

Does photo editing change that photo on other relatives trees too or just my record?
