I don't understand how people are criticizing. She did this role in various different countries. If she was as bad as people were saying, she wouldn't have played the role ON BROADWAY, and on the WEST END. She's raw, vocally and as an actress. I saw Elena's performance in the London production and she was stunning to watch. It was a real star is born moment. I have seen many comments from audience members reporting that something was lost from this production when it transferred to Broadway which is a real shame. Although I can still see what made her a very special Eva and I really think her performance holds up here. Elena excels when dancing and acting. I personally adore her voice even when it is sometimes shrill and think she navigates a horribly difficult and vocally punishing score superbly and managed to for years... THAT'S surely worthy of praise. In 'Don't Cry for Me...' and 'I'd be Surprisingly Good for You' she demonstrates best why she is a great Eva. The manipulative, cold and egotistical woman pulling the strings comes to the forefront of her performance which is beautiful contrasted by her tragic physical decline later on. I've also been really pleased to see more people praising Elena in the comments, a few years ago reading these comments was painful.

I have read way too many comments that are insulting and mean spirited to the artist(s) in the video. And the comparisons always against the artists in the video. And somebody is always better and the best. And the comments, as insulting as many of them are, are not nearly as bad as the replies to others. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and preferences. I think she’s much better and authentic than all the American performers who took on the role before. And she has a great voice. People who criticise her need to get their eyes cleaned. And also, she’s better for the role because she’s Argentinian - meaning she literally UNDERSTANDS what impact Evita had on their nation.
@DistantCousin4 жыл бұрын
@@chocolatesouljah Exactly. It's less about the showboating West End or Broadway leading lady (been there done that in the original productions and all the national tours that aped it) Here they went for a earthy, naturalistic portrayal (in fact the entire production was) and we get an Eva who is not a charicature, has an emotive folk-y voice, a great dancer and was simply transifixing to watch on stage. A highly intelligent and nuanced peformanced - much better than some of her predecessors
@ZoraTheberge5 жыл бұрын
I think the production lacks because of a few key artistic choices. I don’t think Evita works if it’s played as Realism or verbatim theatre. Yes it’s based on real people and events but (a lot like Jesus Christ Superstar) it works best when it focuses on the mythmaking. So in that regard, the actress playing Santa Evita has to embody the *idea* of her and inhabit the ambitious tendencies as opposed to playing the real Eva Duarte Peron. If you play it verbatim, it can be misconstrued as supporting Peron’s politics. Because the reality is The Peronistas were a fascist regime with a socialist scheme to enrich themselves personally. I think Patti LuPone did this well. In her book, Patti talks about Eva as more of an enigma or ghost that haunted her and less a real person who lived and died. But Elena Roger’s whole schtick is that she’s as authentic as it gets. She’s Argentinian and probably looks and sounds more like the real person. But the show isn’t about Eva Duarte Peron. It’s about Evita.
@DistantCousin4 жыл бұрын
The Americans seemed to be far more sensitive to the fascist angle than British audiences who viewed it with more detachment. I read this somewhere, and the political aspect had to be toned down for Broadway
@amyepstein48684 жыл бұрын
@@DistantCousin I'm glad you brought that up. The original album (Covington,Wilkinson) had songs and even merely phrases that vanished over the Atlantic Ocean. Eva's Sonnet and the military response was strong, solid. Lyrics and music. It has been gone since the 70s. A loss. I am American. But I know American audiences wouldn't have understood.

@@anahojman hi. I am here even later than you. I was lucky, years ago, to have a family move next door who became more of a family than my own. And when their family and friends came I was included in their social gatherings. Argelia was a 2nd mother to me. She was from Argentina. She spoke English well. I spent time with her. I brought up the subject of Eva Peron. She was from an upper middle class family. Her father owned an iron works factory. They lived in Rosario and spent summers in Mar del Plata. She never went into the details of what happened when Peron's "representatives " went to see her father. So I am influenced by what she told me. On another note, Elena is wonderful. Not just in Evita. I have listened to her music on her channel. She is one of my favorite Evitas.

You know what's fascist? The dictatorship that USA imposed all over Latin America. Thousands of people are still disappeared here in Argentina just because they have different political thoughts from USA and you killed them. The dictatorship took the power illegally from Peron's wife, who was the legal president. You are saying things that can hurt someone, my grandfather's cousin is still missing and this was 50 years ago. Please, read a book, check what you're saying. Google it, investigate about it. How ironic, the country that killed and made thousands of argentinians disappear use Evita's story as entertainment and then you call her fascist. What a shame.

Vocal is impressive - body movements need work. I saw her in this and she was good but there are times when her emotions are high and powerful via voice and the body is stiff. I really don't think her voice is strong enough to portray Evita. Her voice sounds very strained and almost sounds like she needs to go get her vocal cords checked. There could be something pathological there. Especially when she opts to use her head voice for "And if ever I go to far...", it's very anti-climactic. It should be the high point of the whole song and should definitely be belted. But I did enjoy her dancing!
