What's New in GIMP 2.99.8 Development Release Version

In this tutorial, originally released in October 2021 on DMD Premium (now unlocked), I discuss the latest features and news that were released with GIMP 2.99.8. This development release version is one of the stepping stones on the way to GIMP 3.0.
New features include "Sample Merged" for the heal and clone tools, improved compatibility with drawing tablets and input devices, plus lots of process improvements to help speed up the development of GIMP.

It's good that something is moving in GIMP! It takes a long time to make version 3.0 but I look forward to the final result. Thanks for this video that helps promote the new version of GIMP!

YES!! More please. I do follow the development progress and read the official blog posts while also using them instead of stable versions however it's important to have videos like this one to help spread the word about progress being made. If possible I urge you to please release all these development release news videos as what would be Gimp 3.0 really needs exposure especially that not many artists (like photoshop users willing to give gimp a glance) would take the time to read blog posts or bother downloading gimp development releases to see the changes. BTW The introduction of the new welcome screen with release notes was a great way for onboarding so those interested can check it out

Hi Michael. I love your tutorials about Gimp. I love Gimp also very mutch. I wanted to ask you if you know Q'MIC plugin and ShellOut (Nik Collection) are or about to be compatible with Gimp 2.99.8 or higher. THNX in advance!

I wish they would increase the Viewing Area in Lighting Effects its hard to see the image your working with to know if you have everything adjusted like you want before applying. The older a person gets the worse their eyes are and when you work on a computer all the time it does get rather tedious to keep undoing then pulling it back up up trying to tweak the effect you want, not to mention the fatigue on a person's eyes.

your gimp layout looks so much better and different to mine, Are you using windows version ? If so how do you the UI look like that ? all my icons are in top left corner, while yours in in a vertical list on left side

The UI is GTK+3 in action, which is only available in the dev versions or in the upcoming GIMP 3.0.

GIMP 2.99.16 just came out - will release the video on that in a few weeks. It's currently available to students in my Udemy Masterclass.
