THE ABILITY TO ROLL IS GENETIC. BUT THEY CHOSE TO DO IT. THEY ENJOY IT. PROOF: Once I had a flock of wild pigeons mixed with racing homers. Then I got a few rollers and they cross bred. After the rollers died there were no birds that rolled. I never saw one roll for years. Then years later I got another pair of rollers. A few of my old crossbreds saw the rolling and started doing it themselves...actually just flipping a few times. This showed me that the ability to roll is genetic. But they may not know how to do it until they see another bird doing it. Then they stared doing it. And they continued to roll. I conclude that it is something that they must enjoy doing.

Sam thanks for sharing another great edition of Roller Pigeon Evolution, as always. What causes a bird to be a piano tail bird, and are they normally better rollers then your normal tail birds, for lack of a better word.

I went down to Mr Turners house if you have some of his stencils you are a very lucky man he has them in reduced stencils also very sharp birds I wish you the best of luck with them one day I would love to work a project with the stencil rollers from James

Near the end you show four birds with very attractive feathering on the legs. It's nice to see some like that. And grouse legs are indigenous to the breed. Some showed-up occasionally in Pensom Rollers. But the white one before them with full muffs is too much in my opinion. It crosses the line when fancy inhibits functionality and survivability. It becomes cumbersome in the wild, and I would think it inhibits the streamline conformation you want in a breed that is famous for flying. There are so many beautiful traits to work with, without crossing that line. Rollers come in great variety. That is the fun of it! But they cannot be everything for everyone. You have such a great reputation for breeding flyers, and for fine tuning body type. I would like to see you remain consistent to your high standards, and not make compromises that turn rollers into fancy birds. Am I being a "kill joy"?

Just a little FYI, pigeons cannot carry indigo. They are either indigo or they aren’t. Great videos, though, and keep it coming

I have two questions. First, when you mention not keeping or getting rid of birds, how do you do that. I'm newer to raising pigeons and my loft is getting crowded. Second, you mention numbers sometimes when referring to a bird breed or kind. What is that?
