What is so special about this lens? In this video I take a look at the legendary Arriflex Zeiss high speed lenses that were designed from the ground up to be CINEMA FIRST lenses.
The 35mm T/1.4 "B-Speed" (HIGH SPEED) lens is also compared to the Contax Zeiss 35mm F/1.4 photo lens.

Not many videos talking about the HISTORY of "B-Speeds" so I made this. With the limited time and resources, for best examples on lens performance watch these films - Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Shining, Excalibur, An American Werewolf in London, Flashdance, Fire on the Amazon

What about Barry Lyndon? You showed the candlelight scene from that film which Stanley Kubrick shot using a super fast Zeiss lens that was originally designed for NASA.

@@KylesDigitalLab Yes, that was not an arriflex zeiss, that was a still photography lens that was modified for cinema and was a huge pain in the ass to use like that. Arri wanted a dedicated fast cinema lens that didn't have to compromise for the SLR photo format so the designed these from the ground up as dedicated cinema lenses. Too many compromises adapting SLR photo lenses for cinema, people did it, but it was less than ideal :)

I saw that but I didn’t see B speeds specifically, just the standard mark I and II “super speeds” which are a more modern version of these lenses. The Contax Zeiss lenses are fantastic (I have a full set) but very different to the Arriflex Zeiss cinema lenses. Optical designs and how they’re engineered to resolve. Contax over full frame while the super speeds over the academy motion picture 35mm film standard. I love media divisions content though.

They've got such a rich history, it's more interesting for me to take that approach than mindless image testing. Image testing is okay, but it's impossible to get a good sense based on limited variables. There are just too many factors to look at when selecting a lens, it just doesn't interest me. I mean i love using these lenses so obviously I think they're "good enough", but the hook is the history/story behind them I think. That's my doc editing background coming into play. I can't get "undone" with these old relics.

Hey Mark, great video! Fun fact: since Carl Zeiss Jena had the right to use the name Carl Zeiss in the East Bloc countries, Zeiss Oberkochen opted to use the name Oberkochen Opton to gain access to this market. In this naming convention, Di stands for Distagon, Bi stands for Biogon, Te stands for Tessar, Pl stands for Planar, S-Pl stands for S-Planar, Macro-Pl stands for Macro-Planar, and so on. I've got a 150mm f/4 Oberkochen Opton Di for my Hasselblad 500C and I haven't noticed any differences compared to the regular version.

Ya, they're at rental house prices I think...but they are rare and scarcity drives prices like mad, especially ones that are still quite relevant even today. I wish I had more time I would have loved to have operated the camera vs have to set it all up and drive lol. Much less dynamic that way. I think I did that city circuit about 8 times with various angles.

Great video. Taxi Driver and The Shining are some of my favorite films, classic cinema. I wonder why most directors and movies in the 70s and 80s used Panavision's Panaflex 35mm camera instead of the Arriflex 35BL. The Panaflex came out the same year as the 35BL (1972) and are both self-blimped. For example Steven Spielberg always used Panavision cameras.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze Жыл бұрын
I think it was relationship based. A lot of directors and DP’s have deeper relationships with these cinema brands and that pays off in either rental cost or just fine tuning. Panavision went to great lengths to strip some of their lenses of coatings so Saving Private Ryan could have that “look”. Having those relationships with the brands leaves a lot of room for customization based on vision. Greig Fraser and Arri for example as a modern example.

Ya I was originally going to see if I could build out a set, but they;r'e just too expensive for me to justify. I got this one at a very good price, but will be exchanging it for an arriflex standard speed 85 mark II. I have a 16/32/50 and the 85 will round it out. A little bit better form factor as well as these are all modded PL and focus gear mount. If I was going to build out a set, rehouse/rent out..maybe, but Toronto doesn't have a robust rental market as LA does so it's not a great use of funds i don't think (for me).

Great video as always! Besides the flares, what other differences do you notice in terms of performance between the Contax and the B-speed? Less CA, more background separation, better colors maybe? Would be curious to hear if the Contax can actually match the B-speed if it were rehoused…
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze Жыл бұрын
It’s a faster lens so that’s a major difference. f1.2 (T1.4). Much less focus breathing, both have CA wide open. I need to do some deep dives into the science of it, but first glances thr lenses are easy enough to match. Zeiss had very strict optical quality control l, but the photo lenses were never really designed to match. The cinema lens line were because each lens needs to be used to help tell the story. Photo, the story is told with the single frame. So foundation wise these two lenses were never meant or designed to match. They do fairly well, but there’s a diff I think. The Contax are a great “budget” super speed, but there are some definite trade offs. Barrel lens extension on focus is another big one. The barrel on the Contax extends a lot when close focus, the arri lens moves a bit, but not nearly as much.

If you're interested in the cinematography for Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese recorded a commentary track for the film in 1990 for a special LaserDisc (Criterion Collection release) and it's very informative. It's on KZfaq if you don't have the Blu-ray or LaserDisc. He was inspired by a lot of old films for his camera movements and angles. For example at the end of the film during the shootout scene he was inspired by Moby Dick (1956) to desaturate the colors using high contrast film and opticals and "mix" black and white and color together to give the footage a washed out look (he explains it better in the commentary), which is how he wanted the entire film to look but it was too expensive to do that for the whole film. I believe he also wanted to shoot the film black and white, and his later film Raging Bull (1980) was in black and white. The 1984 film (Orwell) was also shot with a "washed out" look that's similar to what Scorsese did. The Shining also has a commentary track featuring Garrett Brown who invented the Steadicam and he also talks about the 35BL. Although I'm not sure if The Shining (John Alcott) used these lenses.

As usual, a top shelf video. What did you shoot the video on, just curious about the camera and lens used? I love the B speeds, but dislike the triangular look and prefer the 35mm version, but dislike the sawblade look too! I have a 35mm f2 Helios that has 11 blades and it is totally different, but one stop slower. It covers Super 35 as it is a true cine lens, the same as the Arri B lenses so will not cover FF. I believe the cine lenses are made to closer tolerances than film lenses. I also believe any imperfections in the FF lens will be magnified on the smaller sensor. I once toyed with medium format lenses on Super 35 and was totally disappointed for that same reason, even worse, as they are NOT made for the smaller sensor and had the opposite results I hoped for. You can see the same using 35mm still lenses on Super or even R16mm movie cameras, as I did on the Bolex and that made it even worse. I would vote for the B speeds and by the way, I AM shooting a feature film, with you guessed it, the BL2 camera, one of THE best cameras ever made IMHO. Raymond Oelrich Producer Handcraft Film

Fun fact: Zeiss's HFT 35mm 1.4 pretty much IS a Zeiss B Speed. 9 blade triangle aperture and everything. Check that sucker out next time you get a chance.

I've seen them floating around! Very interesting! Those are stills lenses first though right? I really do wonder why this triangle was decided upon. I'm still not sure how it "allows for better focus roll off".

@@MarkHoltze Haha, me neither. XD Yup! Full frame. Floating elements. Released in 1972 - right before the B's came out! My theory - Zeiss brought the HFT 35 + 85 over to the B speeds. With an in-built focal reducer, making it an f1.2 or T1.3. Maybe the rest of the B's went 9-bladed to match those? Either way thanks for the vid! Have fun dude :)

@@area51pictures It seems like 35mm 1.4 is different from T1.2 35mm. BTW, does T1.2 B speed Distagon have floating front element group? As for the 85mm Planar - it's the same in HFT and B-speed.

The Rollei HFT Distagon 1,4/35mm (anno 1972) has the same optical construction as the Contax Distagon 1,4/35mm, both of course covering the 24x36mm format (9 elements in 8 groups - different from the cine 1,2/35mm which "only" covers the Academy 35mm format) but has a different barrel - slimmer in the middle - is quite a bit lighter and, yes, it has the triangular aperture iris. The Zeiss cine 1,2/35mm does not feature floating elements: of that original 4-lens series only the 1,2/25mm does; the later added lenses 1,2/18mm and 1,2/50mm and 1,2/85mm also have floating elements.

You'll have to look on cinema lens for sale groups on facebook for the best results. eBay works as well, just need to search, or just type in "Arriflex B Speeds for sale". There are a few sets I"ve seen in the circles that go for about 25k-35k for a full set of 5 lenses.

I actually traded this for a fully serviced 85 standard speed mark II…was a tough call but the 85 completed the standard speed set (16/32/50/85). Trying to kit out a set of these is too costly and ultimately that’s where the value is. It will get serviced and inserted into a full set where it can continue to shine 😆 Happy new year Joseph!

@@MarkHoltze I was so excited by your thumbnail and 'Zeiss' - I thought 'genius, that will allow stopping down for sharpness and DOF control but no edgy bokeh!'. Instead, it looks like little tears or Reese's kisses in the background! I think if I didn't know to look I probably wouldn't? But it's made me think for sure... Why do I have a reaction to Bokeh shape? Silly, but... it's there!

Sorry, I've never liked Zeiss lenses for stills (Hasselblads) or cine work. I much prefer Rodenstock or Rokkor lenses, or even very old Bausch and Lomb cine lenses. That's why they sell more than one brand, I guess. I won't have a Zeiss lens in my enlarging darkroom at all. If you like them, that's fine with me, but I don't.

Don't have to be sorry for not like a lens mate. If we all liked the same thing, it'd be pretty boring. Rokkor's are great, if i were to start fresh I'd go for a set of those to build out.
