I was lucky enough buy a sad two branch grafted tattered tree from HD at a discount 15 years ago and planted it in a neglected corner of my yard and now I know (from your videos) that I have a Steward and a Pinkerton fruiting tree. I had no ideas what they were but am grateful as I have never encountered them in the store. I cherish and gift them to my good friends and family. Nature's gold. Thanks for these videos.

The Bacon was named not for its flavor but for James Bacon who originally cultivated this popular avocado in California in 1954. What if an avocado were called "Big Seed and Kind of Watery"? I don't mind the fibers in avocados. What I don't appreciate are the massive zones of gray flesh in supermarket avocados from overseas on sale!

@@gregalderdotcom Well i have no idea about the brand names. All the shops usually just call them out by their country of origin and nothing more. There`s usually two or three types to choose from. The smaller ones i think are from Mexico or Colombia. I have seen some from Kenya once but the ones from Peru are found most places and are much better than the smaller mexican ones but rather expensive since they never are sold by the pound but rather individually. Just think of a big apple or big pear. What i can say is the prices seem to go up and down a little bit but rarely on sale. I would usually buy four or five if making guacamole and`s that`s a lot of money to spend. The peruvian ones are usually ripe or close to when they hit the shops so could help explain the price and taste. I never liked Avocado bare but i think it`s wonderful as guacamole which is a bit ironic. Tip of the day, try adding two types of salt to your guacamole to get a little more taste into it. Rock salt and table salt ;-)

Wow. Amazing avocado. I bought a so big avocado in america. It is totally a green.and smooth ball -- nearly as big as a football. It is so big thus me, my parents and my uncle try our best to eat it in a meal but we failed. After i return to my country i can't find such a big and round avocado in any market in my country. I watch your video and learn so much. So, is the big green ball-shape avocado we bought in america a kind of "florida avocado"? We bought this big avocado from a small market beside a farm in America. It may come from America farm and is not a mexico avocado.

Hi Greg , love the info! Looking for your advice. I live in inland oceanside, vista border. I’m looking to eat avocados all year round with my family. I am looking to add either a holiday or a jan Boyce to my collection. I have fuerte, reed, gem, Sharwill, lamb, and a Carmen Hass. All mostly young trees. We are all about trying to get the best tasting fruits, but again looking to harvest year round. We thought adding the jan Boyce was best BUT I see your harvest chart indicates the holiday may be best because of its harvest season. Your thought? I only have room for 1 more tree in the ground but lots of room for a container tree, I just feel ground planting is better.

Ill eat And enjoy any avocado, never tasted an avocado I didn't like never tasted a variety from west indian, strings don't bother me, although I've not tasted very many different varieties , Nor the rare ones never sold in stores, some I've tried are hass, some delicious bigger ones from Peru (walmart), the ones on sale at walmart, aldis, and Rio ranch market they never put the name/type in the stores, ive tried bacon, stringy so called nasty watery zutano even tasted delicious, mexicola, Mexicola grande, wurtz the only avocado I didn't like was an avocado that remained hard after ripening whatever you call those that taste like rubbery when ripe? It would be really fun to taste all varieties at the same time altogether but that's impossible because of differing ripening times ; there is no consensus on the best avocado variety because of imperfect ripening; ripening at temperatures much above or below 70 affects taste, store bought vs home grown, timing of picking the fruit, good varieties also get bad rap because they are grown in unsuitable growing conditions.

Good reviews bit I feel like bacon is often miss reviewed. Early season bacon are watery and not that good, mid season bacon are good but nothing to write home about, HOWEVER, late season bacon will rival any avocado out there with its own creaminess and flavor. I grew up with bacon, reed, and hass in Fallbrook, CA so I've made the comparison many times with some of the best of those varieties. That said, reed is still my favorite.
@gregalderdotcom
@gregalderdotcom Жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan, I agree with you about Bacon. If you let them hang until they start getting cracks on the bottom, they taste great and are not watery at all. The flavor is good but remains different from Fuerte and Hass. Bacon never gets their type of flavor, but it has a very pleasing flavor of its own, which tastes a bit sweet and fruity to me. To your point, one year a bunch of folks got together in early May to compare avocados and everyone was surprised at how much they liked Bacon -- and this was compared to all of the best varieties you can think of.

where can I find a Sharwil ?

Hi Vrinda, The fruit? I don't know of anyone currently selling the fruit in California. I do know of a few farmers that have Sharwil planted and plan to sell them within the next few years. The tree? Sharwil trees are becoming more widely available. Subtropica Nursery in Fallbrook stocks them consistently, and La Verne Nursery has started to sell them a bit recently. See my article here for contact info on Subtropica and La Verne: gregalder.com/yardposts/where-to-buy-an-avocado-tree/

Too much different breeding of the black avocado...but the Puebla avo taste so rich and nice hate the strings 2nd the West Indian avocados u cannot eat it from US stores because they taste like sugary water 🤮 they only taste good when u pick it off the tree in the West Indies/Florida. Great review btw

Hi Jesus. True. There are lots of mutations of Hass. It's an old variety that has been grown around the world so it has had lots of opportunities to make natural mutations. The one you call Tres Marias, is that the same as the one also called Flor de Maria or Alvarez?

Oh, thanks. I've only heard of Flor de Maria. I've never actually seen the trees or fruit. They're more pear shaped? I hear the trees are also more productive.

@@gregalderdotcom no actually is more rounded shaped than regular hass, it flowers earlier and it's season is larger than hass also is less erratic than hass or el fuerte (yielding more uniform yearly) el fuerte is one year good yield and next year not so
