Which 3D Printer Slicer should you use? Well, that depends....
We prefer Simplify3D for its simplicity, speed, and because we know it inside and out. However, Cura and Slic3r are excellent options as well, especially for the price -- free. Other slicers are available, like Matter Control, Eiger, Super Slic3r, Ideamaker, and many others, but which one should you choose?
Thanks for watching!

+1 for supper slicer. Would almost argue that with super slicer you can get really close to the perfect profile if you setup some of the material options.

Superslic3r has been my choice for a while. Cura was giving me trouble, and I do not like the Cura menus. I do miss the additional support material shape options in Cura.

Was excited to see a nrw video today. You guys are the best kind of geniuses... ones created from experience and trial and error. My family has been in the 2D printing industry for over 20 years, we have imprinted on every medium you can imagine. Since 3D printing has recently become much easier to get into as a hobby I went down the customary Ender 3 route and became immediately addicted to buying, modifying and experimenting with 3D printers. I think the concept and the industry are incredible. Discovered your videos a while ago and watched every one, opened my eyes to quite a bit. I honestly think you guys need to host training classes, become the high temp 3D printing bootcamp. Companies in my industry like 3M, Roland and HP do these kinds of 1 week intense hands on training from industry experts. Some people pay good money to be educated about something by pros first before they jump into an expensive printer. Usually at the end of each class quite a bit of equipment is sold. I would personally take that class to build the confidence to operate the high temp 3D printers effectively, get the chance to see what kinds of printer works best for me and also to understand the business side of it and who my customers are. You are both quite articulate, something to consider.

SS is one of my favorites for sure. I use it with my Annex K3 and it’s a very powerful tool. For sure one of the best things about SS is the overhang flow/direction/fan kickstart settings. Also single perimeter top layers just make parts look incredible. However with my Prusa, I still almost always just use the latest version of PS. Their profiles just work. Minimal adjustments (usually fine tuning for a particular spool or material) and the parts come out great. Been trying to learn Ideamaker lately. It seems like it has a few things that I wish SS had (mainly more per-layer and per-model adjustments), but the learning curve seems to be a bit steeper. SS was fairly straightforward since I was already used to using PS. Planning to use SS with my 22 idex when it arrives!

Superslicer is a great option very powerful!!! I been trying Cura 5.0 for the new slicing engine and I use it now when I see that have too many gaps to fill thin walls. Looks ok so far. The paint support in Prusa and SS is one of my favorite things. I haven’t change to S3D because a company that charge any cost for software and doesn’t update at least once a year loses my confidence.

You mentioned that for Cura you would need to make modifications to the software to allow it to print at 500 C. Since it is open source, why isn't forking Cura an option so that you can add those modifications as well as add built-in profiles for your printers? That way you can also easily update the fork with latest Cura features.

Hi guys great content. I started out on a CR10 v2 whit Cura and it was fine for ornamental or not too intricate engineering parts, but as i modified the machine to print engineering materials, Cura very quickly ran out of stem as i needed more control on details, possibility of printing whit variable settings on varying layers and after looking i found Simplyfi3D, and got stuck whit it. I personally believe that for engineering parts and materials it is the best, still.

ok so this video is 1 year old.. its 11/28/23.. can i use simply slicer for my snapmaker J1? which im new to this 3d printing world, and started cause my 9 and 10 year olds are in robotics club now. We are using Tinkercad but Ultimaker isnt working or compatible with our snap maker J1.. Prusa does work, but it too having a hard time sending our models to J1. We are also researching on future 2nd printer.

Started with Cura and I intend to stick with it until I feel that I truly understand how best to use it and what limitations, if any, it places on my printing. Only then will I feel that I can intelligently evaluate other slicing software.

Question. Why does Cura make a small circle at the seam? It makes blobs out the side because of this. I've printed over 100 circular prints only 20mm wide to check settings on the seam but only gets worse. I've tried retraction settings, coating, extra prime , wipe etc. Nothing gets rid of the small circle cura does at the beginning of each layer. Using ender 3. Fairly new to printing but learning fast!

@VisionMiner 2 жыл бұрын
You can usually make them better with coast/wipe settings, but it's basically due to the starting point being in the same spot each time. This is called z-seam alignment in Cura, and you should be able to modify that for better results :)

I have extensively used Prusa Slicer, Cura, and Ideamaker, and what I have standardized on is SuperSlicer. It has just about every single low/medium power setting, and has a ton of high power settings thanks to Prusa's development. It is missing a couple small things like being able to turn off dropping parts to bed automatically, its support interface fidelity/planning is worse compared to curas, and it doesn't have sequential printing support like Ideamaker, but its settings menus are all well laid out, it has settings revert options, and tons of in depth utility tools for high compute power printing like Klipper. Notably it exposes a lot of other features that other slicers don't let users touch because you can shoot yourself in the foot by not knowing the consequences. Also, the import config from project and ease of saving/transfering setting make it excellent for being able to reproduce variations on parts/slicing setups, especially as it can also read configs from other Slic3r variants like Prusa Slicer. I would say I hope you make a config for the 22 IDEX on SuperSlicer, but even if you do I wouldn't use it as I would be much more comfortable making my own, and I think a significant portion of the SuperSlicer community would as well as it is only just gaining traction.

Yes -- buy a machine, start printing, and do as much research as you can. Become obsessed with the topic; eat it, drink it, sleep it -- and you'll have desirable skills for a long time! Really, though, there aren't many programs, and since the industry is advancing so quickly, many curriculums would become outdated before graduation, in our opinion. Degrees help, but obsession helps more :)

I considered getting S3D years ago and it hadn't had a an update since gods dog was a pup even then, I have always used Cura, I tried Prusa Slicer but the printer profiles for 3rd party machines are piss poor, the start and end G-code are the bare minimum to get a print done and you cant transfer the settings from Cura as they are not the same G-codes. I am so comfortable with Cura it does everything I want and more and any spare time I have for learning software is taken up by Fusion 360 tutorials.

SuperSlicer is amazing, it has features others simply don't have, comes with profiles for most common consumer and enthusiast grade machines and makes creating new profiles super easy with wizzards for creating all kind of calibration prints like temp towers, extrusion calibration, dimensional cal etc. Plus it's open source, which is a necessity for me so I'm not stuck waiting for that one update that will never come from some company that has probably stopped development completely

I use Simplify 3D V4 and now V5 which has more features. Some controls are different I've been finding. Where initially I thought it was left out, but it was just moved. Like transform moved to widget control. I'd still like to use CNTL and ALT for move and rotate.

Technically you could, but it would be very cumbersome.... really though, it's not that big of a deal to change the max hotend temperature -- just hard for non-tech-savvy customers buying industrial machines. We'll have a video on how to do it one of these days, but in the meantime......... 22 IDEX profile standard with Cura :)

Me I’m new to 3D Printing but I’m learning fast from KZfaq videos and books I bought. For me I have the creality slicer that came with my CR-10S5 but I upgraded it to the max and it sucks, I got grabcad and super slicer in which I haven’t used much, I like super slicer but because I’m still learning and experimenting with different filaments I use Simplify3D most of the time because it’s a lot easier and I don’t have to make that many changes when I switch between different filaments like pla in which I don’t like much my favorite so far is between carbon fiber nylon and polycarbonate I been wanting to try peek and pekk but it’s too expensive eventually I will try it. For everything so far simplify 3D is working best for me with my fully upgraded Creality CR-10S5 which can 3D print in all materials the only parts original on it is the stepper motors everything else is upgraded even went from Bowden to direct drive, I have a fully upgraded CR-30 3D print mill I ordered is just upgraded as cr10s5 I haven’t got cr30 yet but I would like to know what the best slicer is for it it’s a conveyor belt 3D printer and it’s upgraded with modifications like converted to direct drive, micro Swiss thermistor with pt1000 thermistor, better heating cartridge etc it can 3D print at same temperatures as my cr10s5 which is 200 Celsius on hotbed 560 Celsius on hotend I haven’t found a slicer for cr30 yet what’s a good recommendation for CR-30 slicer
