Күн бұрын

For many years, I bypassed quilt kits, thinking I'd have more fun choosing my own fabrics. But recently, I enjoyed finishing a quilt from a kit in just about 5 hours! Hooray for preventing a UFO!! Now I am ready for high productivity by sewing projects from quilt kits. So tell me - are you a fan of kits or do you select all your own fabrics?
I was selected to quilt along with Cotton Cuts as an Ambassador for their Wild West Puzzle Mystery Quilt! You can join the fun too - simpy choose a color way and precut clues will be delivered to your door each month. Use code "ANDIWEST" for a special gift when you register.

Pros of Quilt kits... fabric already there and in the exact amounts of what you need, Pattern and fabric altogether . Cons of Quilt kits- limited fabric choice.. you either like what they chose, or you end up substituting to meet your creative taste (meaning possible added cost). Final analysis: The right quilt kit can move you along a project, so when it works, go for it.

Another pro is its great when you’re just itching to sew. Another con is the lack of uniqueness.

@@SewBlessedbyRochelle good points. I want my quilts to be uniquely mine, but having quilted for 20 years, I donate most of what I make now, so it doesn’t bother me as much.

NICE! I never thought of a quilt kit as cheating! More along the lines of paying a bit extra for perfectly coordinated and measured fabrics...not a ton of leftovers. I don't purchase many kits because I do have a big stash, but sometimes I can't resist!

I need to shift my mindset! Shortcuts are not cheating. Sewing is the best part so whatever we can do to maximize that time is a win!

Sometimes kits are actually cheaper than trying to find the fabrics first and specific pattern! We finally have a new quilt shop where I live in NC - just celebrated 1 year open. Otherwise any other quilt shop is at least a 50-mile drive and over at least an hour depending in traffic! I do our haze fabric inking but I only do it with 3 places I’m comfortable with and know their fabrics, etc.

Like you, I love choosing my own fabrics and putting them together. However, I enjoy a good quilt kit now and again., if the price is right. When I do, I always do a second one, at the same time, of my own fabric choosing or a scrappy version from my enormous stash. I love Cotton Cuts! For the Wild West PMQ I chose “Tumbleweed”. I think you chose “Wrangler”. (My after thought was “Blue Belle”)

Three good guesses for Wild West! I have never made two of the same pattern at the same time. But I have returned to a favorite pattern in a different color way. Quilting is such fun!

@@TrueBlueQuilts I chose “Tumbleweed” for myself, that is what I am doing for the Wild West PMQ, it’s my 1st PMQ with Cotton Cuts. I didn’t think “Tumbleweed” as one you would pick, but I can see now that you very well might have. When I “double” quilt with pre-cut kits, it’s getting 2 quilts done and only cutting for one, which is pretty nice.

The quilt shops that I go to are usually not in my community. It’s so much easier to buy a kit than buying fabric from a shop and run out or too much of a specialty fabric. When I travel I always buy a kits from the distant shops

Quilt kits? Can’t prewash them…a necessity in my mind… I only recently conceded to using a real quilt pattern instead of ‘making it up as I go along’ which takes a whole lot more time… I am getting old and have too many quilts left in me to make! Yet I am fascinated by the selection available in kits! Sew to your heart’s content, so long as you keep sewing!

I actually like fabric kits but don’t often buy them because I have so much fabric. When it’s a 3 yard quilt I pick my own but when it’s a pattern with lots of fabrics it’s better to get the kit.

I like to have some kits on hand for quilt retreats. If I'm busy all the way up to the retreat, I know I'll have something to work on. I do like to have the cutting done before I get there so I can spend my time sewing. It's nice to have all the decisions made.

Amen to that! I like to spend my retreat time sewing also, so pre-cutting is essential. And no more analysis-paralysis about matching colors to pattern pieces. Win win!

I love both! I found if I need pieces smaller than a fat 1/4 or a 1/2yd or even 1yd Im going to the fabric shops. You never know I might find something I like more. When I started quilting I worked in a quilt shop and you won’t believe it There were no kits (that was just a few days ago 😅)Any way I love both. One thing ILEARNED when you buy bundles buy the border and binding. That could be a problem. I learned the hard way 😮

I worked in a quilt shop before there were jelly rolls! 😂 Yes, definitely get border fabric with the collection right away. I can see how that might be hard to match after time has passed.

One of the prettiest quilts in my collection is a kit quilt! Its called Mystery Rose by Progress ! The applique is skilfully done and is nicely qhand quilted! I , also, picked up 2 quilt kits of Tree of Life Everything is there except thread, batting and ba king . I haven't done them because The fabric choices are a bit strong. That being said, I intend to sub better choices! When I started quilting, all fabrics from a line were not available. We didnt have quilt shops or online services. I just bought ona at my local shopand love all the fabric! We all tweek a pattern and color choices Sooo , I intend to do them my way without having to stress over unavailability of key fabrics ! 🎉

Ready cut quilt kits have their place. Some people have trouble cutting, such as having a disability, or have issues with their hands, so may not be able to cut the material when bought off the roll. That is when kits with each piece cut, and all you need to do is sew them together, is great for those people to be able to then be part of the patchwork/quilting community. Many kits have colours/design on fabrics that I do not like. I find many quilt kits use fabrics that I find would suit more for a person who loves flowery designs, or pink colourings. But they do not suit me. As a bloke, I started my first quilts with blacks and whites.

Yes, kits with precut pieces are definitely helpful if you struggle with that part of the process! I lean towards geometrical vs florals so I imagine it is difficult to find masculine choices that are not simply red-white-and-blue.

Have never bought a quilt kit and rarely even buy patterns. And while I enjoy the "creative freedom", lately I find I more than pay for it in frustration and time.

You raise an interesting point about the goal of quilting. Is it a creative journey of exploration or a productive exercise towards a finished product? Strong arguments on both sides, one is not a better answer. I hope the frustration is a small part of your experience!

I think computerized quilting is cheating. Especially when someone says I quilted my quilt. No you didn’t you “pieced” a quilt and the computer longarm “quilted” the quilt.

My longarm is hand guided, but I am very tempted by the computerized versions since my pile of UFOs has at least 25 tops in it! Whatever it takes to get a finished quilt is alright by me 💙🎉💙
