What’s the Deal With Artisan Shave Brushes?

When it came to shaving, I never really payed much attention to shave brushes and the variety that is out there (spoiler alert: there are a lot of artisan brushes and mass produced ones). I started with a "badger" hair brush that cost me almost nothing. I have since added a few other brushes, primarily synthetic but there is a boar hair brush (which, I think everyone should try one of these at some point). Recently, I have acquired my first artisan brushes to lather up with my artisan soaps and have an artisan shave lol.

@@GregTardif my favorite brush is a cheap Yaqi 26mm Timberwolf. Picked it up on sale a couple years ago and didnt realize it was 26mm, but I used it and love the way it feels and produces lather. With all the variety in wetshaving, I was late to the party on artisan brushes. The one maker that constantly catches my eye is John Williams' Grizzly Bay brushes. Just fantastic designs, especially his 45° fluted EVOs. I'm also a fan of Neil Breed of Heritage Collection Shaving although whether some would consider him an artisan in the strictest terms, I'm not sure. I still love his brushes though. Finding the perfect knot is very personal and although many people love the dense 26mm+, my own personal favourite is from my Semogue 2040 HD badger. A slightly smaller knot at about 22mm but provides perfect flow-through, backbone and softness. Boar is my least preferred bristle, it's just too scritchy for my taste. ATM I'm hankering after some experimentation with synthetics. Sorry for the lengthy comment but you touched on a very interesting subject and I really enjoyed the video!

You know you're serious about shaving when you start looking at artisan shave brushes. Even though I've just been DE shaving for just this year, I own two already. One I got from Billy Goat Brushworks out of Australia (I saw his stuff through another reviewer and, wow, his brushes are great), and then I recently got another from AKA Brushworx which features a Japanese fiber synthetic knot and splays magnificently!!! However, I think I'm going to cool it on brushes as I own two boar brushes (one Omega and one Semogue), one regular synthetic from West Coast Shaving, and then the two artisan brushes. But yeah, both artisan brushes feature elaborate hand-poured handles, amazing custom knots, and just an outstanding feel on the face for lathering. These really up your shaving experience quite a bit!

Hey have you tried a couple soaks in soapy water using dawn or palmolive dish soap? That's what I do with new animal hair brushes before using them and i don't have to deal with any of the odors of natural hair by the time I use them. 2 or 3 half hour soaks in some soapy dawn solution, rinse it out good and then let it fully dry, and then soak again 2 more times. After it dries the third time I have no oders and the bristles are started to break in too.....I recommend that! I picked that up on a forum somewhere but it works great!

Personally I only use synthetic brushes now as they are more convenient and require less TLC. Previously I used boar brushes as I could never get a good lather with a badger brush and the animal cruelty aspect does bother me. However if you want natural horse hair brushes are less common but far superior to badger or boar IMO, also no horses are killed for their hair. Horses have to be brushed regularly so retrieving their hair is a pleasant experience for the horse and it makes good use of an otherwise waste product.

You beat me to it didn't you? Jeez Greg, it was bad enough drinking pickle juice, but now you're into coprophagia. Disgusting! As for brushes, I've recently been dealing with AP Shave Co. in Canada who were recommend by Chris Bailey. I first got a knot to put into an A&E black/white handle which was nice, and then they had a new drop so I ordered a handle and knot separately so I could glue them myself. I like smaller knots with low loft and good backbone so I seat them deeply to accomplish that. I've been using GE Silicone Glue which has worked well. I really like that little Rockwell and use mine fairly frequently. My Simpson brushes are always in rotation also.

@@GregTardif To be truthful I don''t really know squat about brushes. But at this time I seem to prefer a bulb shape with a low loft and decent backbone. I like a longer handle when possible to keep lather from running onto my fingers. I bowl lather and paint because face lathering irritates my face to a certain degree. I have a Simpsons T1 and T2 and a pair of M7 Special Editions. They are synthetic, and I don't care for natural bristles except for smaller boar brushes. Some of the prices on badger brushes seem pretty silly to me, especially when synthetics are so good.
