Fender handles these things just so much better. They have a great image, their guitars can be used in any style, they have things that suit younger generations and older generations. There's the ubiquitous Stratocaster shape and there's Fender that has undiluted brand value, the copies are just copies and not the real deal (whereas with Gibson's products, the real deal is by a different company than Gibson itself). The difference is huge in terms of brand and company management.

@@sixstringtv1 hahah I like your video, the only thing I think you are being unfair is the "price" segment. You are comparing a historic (super high end gibson) to a S2 (low end USA PRS). Following that premise you could compare a Fender Tele Custom shop with a Fender Mexico and say the same thing. The comparison was very superficial for me. I have both a Gibson LP Standard and a LP Historic R9 and even them are very different guitars. And to be fair I'm not a gibson fan boy, I love gibson guitars but I hate the gibson company. PD: sorry about your Yngwie Malmsteen video, I was very good.

My point was that they *aren't* very different guitars... the specs are near identical
@nicolasRebagliati
@nicolasRebagliati 2 жыл бұрын
@@sixstringtv1 Yes but in a very superficial way. PRS are a lot thinner than Les Pauls. One of the reasons why a historic cost much more is that they use low weight woods. If you made a PRS the same width of a LP it would weight a lot more, like a LP standard does. The paint is very different, also the neck. The fuckers at gibson use the R9 neck shape only in the R9, and I haven't feel that neck shape in any other brand. The neck edges also very different, those are all small details. I don't think they should charge that much for them, but its their brand. Not even a Heritage feels like a R9, that its my point. If the comparison was made with a LP Standard I think it would be more fair
@nicolasRebagliati
@nicolasRebagliati 2 жыл бұрын
@@sixstringtv1 One thing for what I really hate gibson is that they take some specs hostage, and only use them in the very high end models. Specially the neck, the neck shape of any current Les Paul is very different from a R9. And the use that to charge you more. Not because its more expensive to make. Also de carved, the R9 carved its not the same of the standard. It's no more expensive to make, just charge you more for it.

Love my Vintage brand LP. I've hardly touched the originals because they are stupid expensive. The Vintage nails the sound, feel, and look of the Gibson at (s/h) 1/10 the price. It stays in tune and the neck and headstock have lasted 10+ years. More money doesn't mean more better and personally I rock cheap (but good) kit. Great vid BTW!

I’ve had an epiphone lp back in the day that I bought new for $250, it wasn’t terrible. I always wanted a Gibson but couldn’t afford one at the time. Later on in life, I started playing in church. One of the other players played on the pastor’s Gibson lp studio, he had to tune his after every song, sometimes the bridge would snap the strings while it was sitting on the stage stationary. The guitar was kinda old so he decided to get a brand new Gibson studio, and still had the same issues as the old one, he literally had to have extra strings on hand because I would snap a string almost every other Sunday! At that time I had a Jackson 7 string soloist, I loved my soloist, it was quality, I hardly ever had to tune it, I never busted a string on it, it sounded great! I still wanted a Gibson but seeing that kinda quality, I will never own a Gibson for playing, I may own one, one day to put on display somewhere.

i have to say, i had alot of guitars went trough my life. ESP high end, Jackson, charvel, PRS i trade the guitar so i can try alot of different brands. I dont get attached. However recently i finally picked up a 2001 les paul special with humbuckers. And its actually pretty awesome, i tried a tribute and a studio before but never ended up trading for them they felt like a furniture more then a guitar, they were heavy and cluncky. But this was just feels good sounds awesome and inspiring the neck is not that thick. Also I know remember i tried a custom shop ES it was really good. I havent played a fender I like. I had a American teli high end its sounded good but i wasnt feeling it with the neck, and a 90's mexican strat with horrible neck however they sounded really nice tho but didnt vibe with them

One more, my buddy has a chibson double cut lp (I believe it's a firefly?) that we put quite a bit of time setting up and slapped a real Epiphone p90 into and it sounds and plays friggin amazing. I'm thinking he has 300$ maybe 350$ into the whole rig and (aside from dealing with customs) is super happy that he's got an iconic guitar that plays and sounds awesome. Once again, it's really not about $, it's about understanding your instrument and putting the time and effort into it to make it the best it can be☺️

Hey there! I own one Gibson guitar which was given to me after someone threw it out a second floor window because his dad told him to turn down. Of COURSE the headstock was broken, on the diagonal. Not bad for a 25+ft.(7.62 meters)drop. I had it fixed, I had to have a new headstock put on it. It's a very strong repair, because a couple of years ago I parked my car on it, and it was fine. The rest of the guitars are Fender Squires, old archtop acoustics, and a few basses, none of them Gibson's. I'm really freaking happy with the Squires I bought. I'm on the waiting list for a Yamaha Revstar.

Yup, I've been playing for 30 years now, started with a Kramer 100 st, Van Halen is my biggest influence. I love Gibsons heritage, not so much what they have become. Their Quality Control has gone out the window years ago. Anything from the earlier 90s and before, I actually really enjoy but their company has become more about marketing, than focusing on their reputation they once held very dear to them. Unfortunate Kramer is no longer their own entity anymore either, Gibson bought them out and the guitars are not what they once were. If they would stick to their original plan, to build high quality instruments, focus on just that, they would still be on the top of their game but alot have given up on them since all of the other newer companies have come about, building amazing instruments at a much more affordable cost. I am by no means a Gibson snob but I am definitely a Les Paul style guy, I'm used to heavy guitars, no 2 guitars are identical, every single les paul will sound different even if they are built the same day, same factory, there are always very subtle differences, but makes a huge difference in tonality. I owned 2 Gibson Sgs, same models and year, just different colors. They both sounded different from eachother, not a massive difference but enough to be able to pick my "go to" guitar. I still have a huge spot in my heart for Jackson!!

It has a thinner(for gibson) wide thin neck, PAFs that are a little extra hot, the pickgaurd clicks on and off, locking bridge/stop bar, and the newer version of the electrical self tuning system... The guitar is pretty damn good and the QC is totally on point. The neck is wide thin(my fav.) And it has modern specs like i like, but i also just got a solar e1.6frlb in a trade(less than half the msrp of the gibson) and i reach for the solar more. Maybe its cuz i like shredders more?

To be fair, you can't compare a custom shop historic reissue with a production model PRS. The custom shop is going to be more expensive. There is a Les Paul model available at the price point of the PRS, the Les Paul Classic. The Classic has the same specs as the Custom shop, plus some electronic stuff. It just misses the point of a historic reissue, which is built to historic spec as accurately as possible. Rest of the video is pretty spot on.

I agree that their pricing is silly in some cases but comparing Custom Shop 59 reissue with affordable PRS S2 (which is a good guitar in it's own right) is not fair. Surely on paper specs might look remotely similar but if you actually try them out you will see and hear how different they are. You can (theoretically) compare 59 to something from PRS Private Stock in the same price range but even then their feel and sound is so so different to the point when I don't even think they compete with each other. Personally I would much prefer 59 because I like big necks, unpotted low output humbuckers and chunky bodies but it's a matter of preference.

I just started watching your videos. I’ve been trying to learn to play for years with huge gaps in between. Finally I dusted off my guitar which I bought about 10 years ago. A BC rich mockingbird made in Indonesia. Which I customized by putting SD invaders on it. I’ve been practicing religiously for a month at least 2 hours a day and between 8 to 10 hours on the weekends. I love the way it sounds and seems to be decent quality for the 300 bucks I paid at the time. I bought some measuring tools and been learning all that. It seems to be pretty solid on the measurements and responsive to adjustments. I don’t really have a baseline of what a good guitar feels like and such but, I was a bit bummed out to see your video you made on the brand. Anyway I like your videos pretty cool source of info on these brands. I’ll dig through your content to help me buy a new guitar once this one no longer suits me.

This is a wonderful channel after finding it from watching multiple channels recommending to I am glad I am now subscribed. I own 2 Gibsons. QC during the ages I have bought them was 50/50. I really love my firebird but my lespaul has so many issues cropping up today. I am tempted to for what it is worth right now give it my own personal makeover. I already replaced the tuners on the Les Paul with locking d'addario tuners some years ago. I have replaced the nut for extra heavy string guages. I kept the pickups and electronics. Now the Firbird is real nice, not too impressive however its so versatile, I love the neck and feel and shape for playing. I love the pickups too on it. The tuners can be a little wacky it took my months to get used to them at first i deconstructed them and reconstructed them to understand what the hell they were. The angle of the neck in correlation to the body is strange its not straight but how the pick ups and the bridge are in correlation to this was such a huge wrap around for my head. I had to mess with the hieghts of those things after change guages. Also zero fret zero brass nut system though trying to make the players life easier with the easy go to adjustments its applications for blues playing are supreme but you can use it for some really interesting non traditional style play styles. All kinds of open/chordal tunings are nice on it. The mini humbuckers aren't as saturated as humbuckers for metal so there is a different sound quality when playing. Overall i don't hate Gibson but for what they've become they are really overpriced and when a generation of players grow up playing different guitars on the market that are way less expensive and have way more about them then for the exorbitant price of a Gibson you will see a player shift where its the least bought brand. I was one of those kids at some point where Gibson was the brand I wanted but if I had a been who I am now I'd have just gotten something that is way more versatile(i.e. has a great trem system or doesn't go out of tune from treming away, has great hardware and pickups, looks and feels inviting comfortable to play.) Modern Gibsons lack an inovation factor.

I've hated Gibson for while; my first "nice" guitar was a Gibson Les Paul that I saved up for by mowing lawns in my neighborhood for a year and a half in early high school. It gave me endless problems in terms of things falling apart due to poor build quality, but the vast majority of my issues with the guitar stemmed from the input jack, which I eventually just gave up on and replaced with a better one. Kind of ridiculous considering how much I paid for the thing. Nowadays my main guitar is a Kiesel CS3 (their version of a Les Paul) that was custom built for me exactly how I wanted it, the build quality blows Gibson out of the water, and it cost me half of what the average Gibson Les Paul costs. I don't understand why anyone would by Gibson anymore. I think it's worth noting that as I'm typing this comment, I am currently looking at the crack that has been slowly developing on the back of the aforementioned Gibson Les Paul, patiently waiting for the guitar to decapitate itself

Heritage was threatened with legal action because they use Gibson's history in the building they manufacture in as a selling point, although having literally no connection to Gibson any longer. They are owned by a Singaporean billionaire's kid and fired all the remaining Gibson luthiers and have since replaced all the original Gibson machinery with new CNC processes.

@@sixstringtv1 that's just it, the natural relic effect, the smell of a new nitro finish in the case... I don't mind little dings and nicks on my guitar but I generally treat them carefully anyways. Also I found it interesting when my guitar teacher (with multiple neoclassical albums and his own custom shop guitar company) mentioned how he swears by nitro finish (over basswood specifically on his personal builds.) The finish is physically much thinner than any poly finish and he claims it results in more of a "bell-like" tone to notes, the actual tonewood of the guitar can be accentuated more. Just food for thought, I don't own any nitro guitars currently XD

Back in the 1990s Gibson briefly lost endorser Dickey Betts to PRS. I remember Dickey expressing his complaints with Gibson at the time. He said he couldn't get replacement parts, probably meaning pickups, for his road-worn Goldtop Les Paul, that were as good as the originals. And he said that you've still got to put pickups into a good piece of wood, implying that the wood in his PRS guitars was better than what Gibson was using at the time. Shortly after that, Gibson got him back as an endorser. I never heard the details about how that was accomplished.

I love it, it plays very nicely, sounds great, feels super nice and has a nitro finish. Bargain of my life. My Fender road worn Tele(Mexico), which I also love, cost me almost double of that. My PRS clone Fame Forum was more than double new, but I bought it used, for the price of the Gibson, because nobody knows what fame forum is. Out of all three of these guitars, my Gibson is my favourite. And probably worth the most at this point in time. I bought a $500usd Squier that’s better than any Gibson that I have ever played. I remember at the turn of the century and Gibsons were so bad that they were literally falling apart on the racks of stores. Binding coming off, finish cracking (to the point of falling off in chips), frets popping out… All with no interaction from humans, because they were so expensive you had to get permission to play them. That’s on top of more common problems like necks warping, and the sloppy, sloppy finish jobs. Blurry, uneven…

Gibson is like the Apple of guitars: they did something innovative 40+ years ago, and expect everyone to buy their shit on legacy alone (which many do because they have a cult of fanatical fans who would probably commit murder to defend the honor of their favorite corporation), only occasionally coming up with useless 'innovations' that no one wants or needs, be it robo tuners or deleting useful ports to enhance aesthetic quality. Disclaimer: I don't like Fender either, because I don't think every single guitar store needs half of the entire showroom dedicated to a single brand, but people say they play well, while the only defense I've seen for Gibson models is "it's all worth it for the tone, man!"

heritage doesn't have all the old equipment, the machines used to wind their world famous PAF pickups and Patent number pickups are now owned and used by Seymour Duncan along with all the NOS for those pickups, he literally bought out entire factories and now Seymour has a monopoly. Anyone that wants a PAF style pickup with NOS parts and or wants it wound on the original machine, has no choice but to purchase from Seymour Duncan. Heritage is cool and all but make no mistake, the most authentic new les pauls are the ones with Seth Lover Seymour Duncans, regardless of what name is on the headstock.... but for argument sake no name carries more weight with a les paul than Epiphone for the record.

I like Gibson guitars, not necessarily the company. I do understand the issue people have with them. One thing I will mention is the price comparison is a bit off. You compared a Gibson Custom Shop model to a lower priced PRS S2. More accurate would be a price comparison between an S2 and a Gibson USA production model, or even a Studio for that matter, which costs about $1700.00

I always liked SG Style Guitars. My favourite player Mickey Jones of the UK based Welsh band Man always used on. Gibson was way out of my price range, but I found a very nice Westfield guitar with poor quality tuners & nut. A minor upgrade and I feel I have a quality instrument, the wood is great, and the finish looks lovely. The pickups could be better but are ok, there is a guy in a Scottish isle winding his own pickups that are really excellent for the price. There are ways to get a Gibson Style guitar without selling your soul to them

Gibson would be best off just countering with three basic measures. 1. Make their iconic guitars for a much lower rate than what they are doing now with better quality control even if they have to move production out of the US. How long did it take them to make suitable 1959 LP Standards? Way too long, this has been an ongoing issue since the release of the Beano album. What should have been the largest gift horse of all time they responded to by making heavy and bad guitars that had nothing to do with the 59 LP’s. 2. The legal issues which I feel a lot of people have covered. There’s no reason to sue Heritage and other boutique builders when they should be trying to bust Chibson fakes instead. I don’t mind the obvious protection of intellectual property but a lot of Gibson’s cases are specious to say the least. 3. Marketing to younger players that can build the future for them. Metallica and Megadeth ain’t it. Sad that the new management is not dealing with the core issues left in place by the old management.

In late 2018 I bought 2 Gibson's try to help them out and get myself a good deal. One was OK for what I paid but not in the price it was made to sell for. The other one was ok appearance wise but was assembled and "setup" like it was done by someone with Zero experience and no instructions. QA sighed off and the Gibson baby pictures like all was well. Neither guitar have been out of their cases since late 2018. I was that miffed and just didn't want to play them. While you want to give anybody a pass for tough times I wasn't feeling much for Gibson . Later one when the new management stepped in it... with the "Authentic" fiasco I went pretty much to being Gibson hater. Snobs with a bank roll acting like they did everything good that ever happened by buying a busted brand. When Gibson did that and then started the "collection" crap like they were a Paris fashion house I knew I had bought my last Gibson's. Authentic means no new ideas, living off the past.

Long gone are the days when playing a Gibson meant playing a top of the range guitar. Nowadays you can find great instruments (far superior to Gibson, Fender and ... dare I say it... PRS) from a vast array of brands, big and small. Buying Gibson equates in many ways to buying Rolex or Ferrari: no real reason besides having big pockets and willingness to tell the world about it. As for sound and tone... well they do sound incredible, but in the right hands. Bonamassa makes his bursts sing. Hammett playing Greenie sounds like... well, Hammett playing a run of the mill decent Les Paul. I do love Hammett's playing by the way.... would I spend 6 grand on a LP? Don't know... Great video by the way. Keep up the great content!

Has anyone mentioned the actual "why" regarding Gibson Les Pauls losing their heads? It's not because they're not scarfed and glued. It's because of that 17 degree headstock angle and the lack of a volute. It makes for a very high stress transition. PRS solved the problem with a 10 degree headstock angle but DID NOT scarf and glue the headstock, nor do most electric manufacturers. That same 17 degree angle also lends itself to the tuning instability and the more shallow angle is the fix. You'd be doing yourself a favor to do a bit more research and bring all of the information to the table when you dump on a brand like this. If your reasoning lacks factual information, instead of sounding authoritative it comes across as simply snarky and doesn't get taken as seriously.
