Hi Scott. Here in the UK on new builds, we set the windows back in the external building skin, (usually 100mm concrete blockwork if being cladded), so that they sit 25mm INSIDE the insulation cavity. (UK building regs). This leaves a distance of roughly 100/125mm from the outside face of the window frame to the outer edge of the cladding. (cladding is usually 25mm feather edge board lapped and fixed to 25mm batten and AVCL layer, which is screwed to the external blockwork skin). A timber finishing trim is then fixed up each side of the window to cover the blockwork/batten/cladding. I actually gauge out my cladding to make sure that there is a full unbroken board running across the top of the window, (slightly runs below the window frame head), which weather proofs it at the same time. Great to see how you guys do it. 😎 Cheers.

It's cool to discover yet another way of doing it and I'd not seen this way before now. I often muse about how different trim styles and details evolved for different climates in the absence of modern caulking and materials. It's interesting to see which parts of them remain even after the need for them disappears. Fully expecting you to scribe and cut the siding back I couldn't initially grok the clip detail on the head flashing. Didn't have to wait long to figure it out though! Thanks for the great content,

Hey Scott. Love the videos and the meticulous work you and paedau do. I am in Connecticut in the US, here we would normally put the window in, it has a nail flange that gets nailed off into the framing around the window, then tape the flanges, run the vapor barrier, then trim the window out with whatever casing someone wants. Then the cladding runs into the side of the trim and then the ends get caulked. Honestly I think the way you do it is much neater. Keep up the good work lad!

Halifax, NS, Canada - I build "timber" windows which we call wood, wooden, traditional, or heritage windows. We always install the windows before cladding, I have never seen a window installed this way but as long as there is a scriber it seems all the same to me. We also never have a steel sill pan, just the flashing on the rough opening. I really enjoy this channel, makes me want to go back to NZ

There are many ways to do this, as you did with the scribe(pain in the as5 method, long on time) and you are left looking at a joint in the front elevation that can crack. Add a return on to the wings(moving the joint to the side)And butt the weather boarding up to this.(quick). Make a rebate in the end of the weatherboards(making them square stock efectivley) and plant a square timber onto the wings, just like the above. Scott, you and your mates are great chippies, nice to see your work bro. Bit suprised after all the money spent on the job that the client is going to refurb that old sash window and double glaze it...must be a reason ,Prehaps its a family heirloom.
@gman8557

Hey first time comment, long time watcher. Here in the states we waterproof window openings pretty much the same. The differences here, on that window you did... the opening measurement you would need to get, is the over all size of window including the exterior casing (trim) and the scriber would be installed first... plus a smig more for caulking... To match the windows of rest of the house, the distance that the windows juts out, typically here the exterior of homes have plywood over the framing of the house then siding (weather boards) so you’d install the window tight up to the waterproofed plywood. Then caulk that sucker :-)

Windows in the Uk are set back from external face and would generally have a lining from face of frame to widest point of the cladding. Both have there merits, I would say visually having them set back allows for a smaller window frame, which in my opinion looks better but maybe that’s what iam used to. Great work though 👍

Hi, Scott. A friend of mine in Auckland makes (or used to make) double-hung windows *from scratch*!. Every house he has build is literally 'hand-made' since he cuts all his own trims, barge-boards, scotia, architraves ... etc ... Gob-smacking results! He's been in the magazines a few times now, on TV ... Master-carpenter of the highest order; Architect; yet never trained, no quals. I could organise an intro if you want to shoot some video in his world. (He's out past "Titters")

Car shock absorbers can be placed in the walls of a timer house to absorb earthquake energy, cut timber diagonals in-between the studs to make a diagonal brace, but use a car shock absorber between the bottom plate and lowest dwang. In other words, a timber diagonal brace (cut into 4 or 5 seperate lengths) with a car shock absorber attatched to the end od it. (studs do not get cut).

G, day Scott, Pado and Richard (not on site) from Sydney, Australia. Storm mouldings: in my experience can vary from aluminium, timber quads, brick and tile. @@cmmartti only required in high or extreme exposure zones here. (you fill in a risk matrix when you submit a consent to council) We call it RAB board (rigid air barrier)... Common on our commercial jobs and becoming more common residentially. Weather boards in sheltered locations in Auckland (with Eaves) are unlikely to require it, and matching into existing that doesn't have it (tar paper if you are lucky but probably nothing on that aged house). weatherboards have a ton of air moving through which keeps it all dry and therefore functioning. Sealing up stuff inappropriately has generated problems in the past here. Not code, so why would the client want to pay for it? Also the stuffing around to get the extra depth in an addition would be super expensive for what it gains. Airtightness is not required by code in NZ.

I’m always amazed how many inspections you guys have to go through. Where I live (Slovakia) no one gives a dam at reconstruction, and only if you are touching load bearing walls you have to have plans from architect. Even roof change is considered just maintenance and no one care. And when doing new house, there is only one inspection at the end and that is only about certificates for electrical and heat losses and so on.

I live in Danmark and we have brick house og Concrete house. So all the holes are pre mad. We put the windows in the holes and give them silicone on the outside and timber inside. But isolation in between. Because of the weather conditions up north all out Windows are double and triple glazed.

Nice. Scribe is a great neat finish. In Australia we don't get the wrap and flashing inspection. We probably should. Was this a result of the leaky house thing in NZ? Im assuming you guys get more rain so it makes sense.

So the scriber between window casing to cladding is the "period" way windows are done in NZ? By period, I mean that vintage of house (about 100yrs old???) I do a wide variety of work on Victorian to 1930's houses in SW Mississippi. Generally speaking, houses of that period here would have exterior window casings made from material 25mm or a tad thicker and the cladding would die into exterior casing. That scribber detail is pretty cool! Enjoy the vids greatly!

Hi Yah from Whangaparaoa, Loved this episode and am using it as a teaching session. 63yr old woman with zero building training but have 3 leaking french doors and no money. I'm doing it myself but infinitely slower than you guys. The house was probably built as an Orakei State house, shifted onto this site 98-99ish and an extension added which includes a bedroom and deck over a garage. I asked the previous owners if they had any leaking problems and they twice said no. They lied! Now the doors are out I can see there were no sill trays or head flashings. Don't know how they got past building inspections! Of course the original is completely watertight despite old technology. Not looking forward to getting the scribers right...possibly will need to buy many extra meters of wood ☺

So interesting how the windows are done post cladding. Wonder if they do that with new builds, as I’d think you’d want to “dry in” your build as soon as possible. And seems you can’t do that using this method until the cladding is up.

I am impressed with the quality of craftsmanship from New Zealanders Esp. the scribers. Most American new home-building is blow and go, bang them out, nothing but slop. Really quite a shame. We have some custom carpenters and fine homebuilders but they are few and far between.

Hey Scott, just letting you know I have judged other builders against you and Pareau and honestly they dont match up, except one, Mcanulty Builders in Papakura, as for the rest I have dealt with...nup, I actually do a better job(following building nz standards), to your standards( I know time restrictions on builders etc but you seem to do it fine) and only get them in for the LBP required work, dude keep on keeping on, your knowledge you spread is invaluable!!!
