Oh boy, there's a new champion coming to the PBE and to the game itself, and he wants to destroy Demacia! Let's talk about Sylas, his story and concept and his unusually well-groomed handsome face and big rippling muscles that he managed to maintain in prison.

Since this comes up a bit: the font for the joke at the start is called 10 Cent Soviet from Blambot.com - it's a font designed to look like what a stereotypical "Soviet" font would look like in a cheap comic book from like the 80s, so it uses very wrong Cyrillic for some of its letters. Apparently it makes it really confusing to read for people who actually use Cyrillic in their language, which I can sympathize with - I can't tell you how awful it is when Americans use Ø instead of O for the aesthetic.

Id enjoy seeing them have him fall to both sides. Yes mages need freedom, but some are dangerous threats and Demacia has the tools to control that and the toll the duality would take on his mind. he already suffers heavily from past traumas and a need/feel for change either by his hand or someone else. (Cant believe im saying this) Lux would be amazing at bringing some balance back to him, She represents a childishness or naivete and purity and maybe being exposed to that more could shape or mold Sylas into a healthier Mental state.

Good points all around, but I do have one point of disagreement: Sylas being archetypal and tropey doesn't mean he can only be one thing and therefore should be that thing to its fullest degree. I think making Sylas deliberately attractive was a good move on their part precisely because of the reasons you listed: he's not just the firebrand starting a fight at the front, he's also the charismatic leader. And because so much of his design is intended to be scrappy and fight-oriented, there *needs* to be design elements that represent him as a charismatic political leader, and that means not just handsomeness, but also how well-groomed he is and how he chooses to present himself to others. Why didn't he put on a shirt? Take off his collar, get fancier pants? Because it's all part of the image he wants to convey to others. He wants to convey both power and "being one of the common folk", which are two classic points of appeal for politicians. The thing I think tripped you up a bit was the idea that a political leader doesn't lead from the front or wear their emotions on their sleeve, and for other nations that makes perfect sense, but for Demacia, that's how leadership works there. Jarvan is a capable warrior and speaks impassionately, leading the charge. Garen, the archetypal symbol of Demacia, charges forward at the front. Kayle, a revered hero from ages past, is an angelic armoured woman with a sword. Risking their leaders and symbols in the frontline of the fight *is what Demacia does* as a nation. That's why Sylas being exactly the way he is makes sense. He's exactly what a leader of the common folk needs to look like in Demacia.

My sort of theory/explanation as to why Sylas looks so ripped and fit despite being in solitary confinement and chains for a decade straight is this. When he was imprisoned, his Chains prevented him from releasing his magic. He couldn't use his Magic outside of his body. But he could use his Magic inside his body, so he concentrated his Magic internally to his muscles and to sustain himself, which helped him quite a bit because regular food and water was pretty irregular. So sustaining himself by reinforcing himself with Magic is how Sylas was able to avoid looking and feeling as gaunt as other imprisoned Mages were. This method only really worked because Sylas had naturally large reserves of Magic energy, second only to perhaps Lux in terms of raw Magic energy (along with critical Mage training from childhood). In his imprisonment, Sylas would reinforce his body with Magic. He didn't have enough sheer Magic energy to overload and brute force break his Chains (absorbing Lux's overflowing Magic reserves is what helped him do that later on), so he focused on using his Magic enhanced body to do exercise and calisthenics along with visual training involving swords (based on his memories as a Hound for the Demacian Mageseekers) so as to avoid going _completely_ insane due to the long term solitary confinement. It's through years of this self-imposed physical training that basically explains away why this buff looking Mage can go blow to blow physically with the ridiculously physically powerful tank known as Garen, why Sylas looks as ripped and fit as he does despite a decade in solitary confinement, and why he mainly focuses on physical close combat Magic rather than more ranged, beam spam type Magic that Lux specializes in. It's also because of his decade long imprisonment that Sylas struggles with using long range Magic and specializes heavily in close range Magic, like creating magical energy swords. With enough time, perhaps months and years, Sylas' body can be conditioned back into being able to more comfortably use long range Magic. But as he is right now, he mainly sticks with Magical-Physical Reinforcement to enhance his close combat melee along with using Magic to create magical energy weapons. But yeah, that's basically my theory/explanation as for why and how Sylas has the physique that he does.

Edit:: Got this info from my mother, who is a personal trainer with experience training former inmates. Actually, to touch on the design bit, he's built like a prisoner. People who've been to prison for a very long time usually don't work out their legs as much as their upperbody. So in the end, they have thin legs but bulky arms, rounded trapezius muscles, and toned abdominals. That makes sense for him, since he's hauling around big heavy chains all the time.

I really like the dynamic Sylas brings to Demacia. They are always kinda branded as the "good guys" with their emphasis on honor and Justice and their gold, white and blue representative colors. It's cool to see the darker side of their opinions on magic that they only briefly touch on with Lux.

Even so unfortunately, Sylas is a superior design to Kaisa. At least contextually he visually makes sense despite some incongruences (pointed out in the video) and his story isn't too farfetched (sure, the series of events that formed him are silly, but at least lead to something sensical, namely the mage revolution on an anti-mage country... he's still a sociopath though), Kaisa just contradicts her story, and both her and her story by themselves are the worst written in the game thus far to the point of contradicting everything related to her.

@12:29 I would make a distinction between the political leader and the revolutionary because historically speaking revolutionaries make bad politicians because they only know how to wage war, so often the last act of a revolution is the devouring of the military/fanatical leaders who started it all i see Sylas not as a political leader but as a hardlining revolutionary who will, regardless of whether he is successful or not, end up dead due to becoming a hindrance in post-revolutionary negotiations because of his fanatical stance on issues

The thing is, unlike situations like the French Revolution, there is a kingdom, with enough power to rival Demacia's, that is just waiting for an opening. If Riot decides to go with that idea, they can keep Sylas current characterization while also maintaining his position as an influential revolutionary.

THANK YOU. It's probably annoying me far more than it should, but his design language is Kai'sa's bs all over again. Nothing other than his garbs speaks to the life he's lived, the kind of person he's become. He's too clean cut for someone who's apparently been in there since his YOUTH, and he's too well toned and healthy for someone who ADMITTED TO EATING RATS. The flimsiest part of his physique are his legs, which make even less sense, as his muscles can surely only be explained by having to heft the petricite gauntlets every day, for 15 years. The sheer artistic talent of these people Riot has employed is jaw-dropping, yet as a whole they still forgo fundamentals of character design to be pandering rather than authentic, even when, as you said before with your video on Swain and "No more ugly champions", crafting a character with powerful aspirations and motivations can itself offer them a greater appeal.

My god I would love to see an event in-game representing the mage uprising in Demacia. Imagine all of the characters like Shyvana and Lux, joining the fight with more undercover Demacian mages. maybe even Galio, as he showed a lot of sympathy to Lux. I think Jarvans story can be updated aswell, how he could think about magical creatures as of help to demacia instead of the enemy with the influence of Shyvana, who he knows is a magical creature and showed him that not all magic is bad.

And that's what it is, even Skyen got it so. If his theme is a revolutionary mage free from prison, shouldn't be on his shackles, not in his thristing looks? Is the same fundamental issue that Kaisa had. Is not that is wrong, is that seems unbeffitting. Namely that you got an issue in hand when the first thing he visually communicates is that you want him to whip you as you call him daddy rather than he's a bitterful manipulative mage with desire for havok and overthrowing his nation's ruling. Doesn't transmit the image of a revolutionary but a model.

I've never been awaiting so much for one of your breakdowns until this! Couldn't agreed more with you, I was so happy with Demacia getting a new champion thought it left me with some disappointment for the reasons you mentioned and that I'm not into being a bit edgy or radical, at least here it serves a purpose to the life and his region. I was expecting him to be handsome thought not so buffed up or like you reproach, so well kept. Also raises the question of, why is he alive once they managed to imprison him, besides of getting to the point of allowing Riot to have this new champion, what was the purpose behind keeping him caged, what has Demacia to gain from it? Eliminating a threat, wiping the magical scum was more logical. I doubt they would had expected to somehow reform him and make use of him again. As I'm writing that... I wonder what about if Lux was there not only driven by her own heart and naivety but also following instructions by the Illuminators that backfired? Just that it came to the public knowledge she was befriending a dangerous mage prisoner so the "Operation" had to be dismissed...

I'd say the largest example of Riot not being willing to show major upheavals within regions is related to the Darkin, especially Aatrox. I can somewhat understand Kayn not leaving too much of a mark on Runeterra as a whole, as at his current state of story progression he's just an angsty teen with adoptive ninja daddy issues who happens to carry a very spooky scythe. But the other two Darkin are very much a big deal, and while we've seen the effects of the overall war between the Ascended (what with Shurima being a giant wasteland, and Shuriman ruins lying everywhere, even under Piltover according to one Ezreal colour story) the effects of the present day rise of the Darkin are nowhere to be seen. In fact, Aatrox isn't mentioned once on the entirety of the Runeterra map. This strikes me as a little odd because I get the feeling if our world had an insane corrupted god as tall as a skyscraper, on giant wings that blot out the sky, with a blade the size of several houses alone, that was absolutely and utterly unkillable and hell-bent on slaughtering absolutely everything and everyone, I feel like it'd be a pretty big deal. He's called 'The World Ender' for fucks sake, and he more than has the power to back that statement up, yet he seems strangely absent from the world he is supposed to be very busy ending. Where are the corpses of gods lying around that he's slain to call himself 'The God Killer' (Riot has confirmed he has in fact killed Gods both before and after being corrupted) where are the razed fields and villages, where are the terrifying tales of 'Hey did you hear in the south the end of the world is murdering people by the thousands'. That sounds like a story that would travel quick. Quick reminder: This is a being that (BEFORE BEING GRANTED ABSOLUTE INVINCIBILITY) was only barely caged by abusing his own power as a conduit, by an army of millions, led by the literal embodiment of war. That monster is free, roaming around, and yet there's nothing to show for it. Wait, after further research I am wrong. There is exactly one affect Aatrox has had on the world since becoming a darkin. He slew Tryndamere's clan and made him a bit miffed. That's it. One random clan in the middle of nowhere. Some 'World Ender' huh. (oh and Varus is also incredibly powerful, if maybe a little weaker because of the whole 'Valmar and Kai resisting him with the power of love' thing, but is still very much a huge threat to Runeterra. After breaking out of Pallas, we see him murder a few Noxians in a forest and... that's it. Poof, a being more powerful than actual gods (Ascended are considered gods, Darkin are Ascended imbued with forbidden magics to further their own power, thus Darkin > Gods) killed like five people in a wood somewhere and that's it. Varus' resurrection has had less tangible effect on League's world currently than Jinx has. At least she blew up a few vaults and made Vi and Cait all mad. The beings that are, and I quote, "more of a threat to Runeterra than the void itself" are less impactful than some woman with a few guns.)

To clarify: Right now Varus is canonically ocuppied searching for his missing sister, so we may aswell not know about him until she gets released as a champion, using Varus' progress as a teaser as they just did for Sylas. For everything else, you're absolutely right.

I think the whole male fanservice trope that Sylas has is to make him an opposite to League's other violent revolutionary, Urgot. Both men share the background of men been betrayed by their place of origins, escaped from confinement and using their surroundings to fight back, but their appearance visually demonstrates their difference in methods with Urgot being a steam-punk fear-mongering monstrosity that screams believe in my way or die in contrast to Sylas's violent but handsome rogue that could coxes people to joining his cause because he is tapping into the oppressed mages' growing resentment all the while having be attractive could make people lose their guard around him that they would be easier to convince when Sylas makes his grandiose speeches. Just a thought.

I think the Problem with lore updates, not only in League but also in like, full time Roleplay and Dnd Servers, is that the game takes heavy hits from those, and ist intimidating to see alot of Players rage and/or even leave because something has changed, even though there was announcments, there was solid reasons for it, People are still going to be mad About, idk, not being able to Play that Champion because he died in the Lore, or, Not being able to roleplay that character because the City is currently under Siege..... I am Talking from experience, because im a Server admin of a DnD Roleplay Server, and since we ran this big siege battle, where characters died, NPCs have fallen in battle, where the Villains started to conflict eachother because of clever roleplay, we didnt do ANYTHING like that EVER again, because About 8 People left, and many went inactive. I guess the only way to do those big changes is to inform the Players to give CONSENT that they are okay if their favourite NPC dies off, or their favourite Country on the map gets eradicated by a dark Lord.....Otherwise, People will get mad, throw Sissy fits, and be scaring the developers/Dungeon Masters into this stiff, No Upate of what we have but Instead Always add something new style

I disagree that the only character progression possible for Sylas relies on him taking over or mellowing out; there are many possible ways to advance his story, like these examples: creating a political party/joining that one mage group that Lux did, moving the mages out of Demacia and creating another faction, going to another faction like Noxus to help him, or being a weird "vigilante" character, like a mix of Cassiopeia and Talon (just goal like Cass but ruthlessness of Talon). Riot has had a very unique and slow-paced lore, and I think it's good that they're not rushing the story. It creates more time to introduce more characters into the lore, progressing characters with minor lore, and has a better focus on individual champion lore. While I would love for them to expand on lore and come out with stories more often, I would hate for them to rush the world lore in a way that almost ignores the individual champion's lore.

A good question to Riot'd be why is Sylas even alive and in one piece? Aren't they supposed to be mage killers? And they must know his ideas. If Demacia is such a fascist monarchy, how is this rabble rouser allowed to live? You make a very good point in denoting how healthy he is after such a long confinement, he should show some damage.

Yaal pulled the whole magican killers put of your asses. Mages arent always killed. Mostly mages are repressed and their rights are taken away in a big part. Sylas was living in extreme powerty when they realised he is a mage and wasnt allowed to go out of this state. Than he got used. Mages are murdered when they oppose the law, like in his short story

I love hearing you talk about advancing the plot for league of legends and I wanted to hear your thoughts on something. Fundamentally, a fictional universe should only be engaging if you feel that there are real conflicts and consequences that exist in that world and that the timeline of that world in a certain way runs parallel to ours where we are given incite into how the story progresses. Given this, a large portion of the playable champions are part of stories that make up the HISTORY of the universe. Yet they still exist alongside the characters (like Sylas) that we see very directly as pertinent to what is happening RIGHT NOW in the league universe. Yet all of the characters interact with each other in-game as if they are all part of a massive socio-political spectrum as it relates to the FUTURE of the league of legends universe. Are these interactions canon? If not, are some of these characters that come from the world's history dead, assuming that they are not somehow immortal? Or did these lore events happen recently enough that mortal characters would not be much older than when their lore stories took place? Like LeBlanc in her relationship to Mordekaiser and the founding of Noxus. Did this not happen years ago? How is LeBlanc still alive? What are her views and motivations as she exists in the world in the present? Overwatch is more concise in timeline and, for the most part, all of the characters seem to be part of the same global conflict(s) all happening at the same time. The trade off being that the events in Overwatch take place in a fixed point in the future where technology is at the same level of development universally, whereas league does a lot of experimentation with different fantasy/sci-fi tropes with different levels of magic/technology inspired by different time periods (like the dark ages vs. modern day). This gives league more freedom to explore different fantasies, but I'm not sure that they've perfectly executed on having all of these fantasies exist simultaneously in way that I believe and understand what is at stake between characters and the regions as what the lorewriters would have me believe is "the current day". As someone who is interested in how world building and storytelling in a fictional universe works, I was wondering if you could shed some light on whether or not this is a valid criticism of league's storytelling as an extension of your own comments on how lore has been presented in the past. Essentially, does league's timeline make sense? and what is CURRENTLY happenning in the league universe? Sorry this was so long but in true TBSkyen fashion I had to spend a lot of time talking about something that others might consider a tiny arbitrary detail

I think if Sylas manages to make an impact it could potentially further the lore of more champions like aside from just Lux like Vayne and Galio and their relationship with magic, I think Sylas could also be a villian that complements Poppy very well in particular, one is an inherently magical being that dislikes magic, the other a human who embraces it, while Sylas tries to change Demacia through violence and rebellion Poppy could prove as a medium between the two factions after all being one of the founders of Demacia she is the embodiment of men and magic working as one, I think this would be honestly more interesting than her just having to use her hammer to destroy a big bad Noxian monster or something and suddenly realising she's the hero even though she's been killing big bad monsters effortlessly for quite some time as her comic depicts, after all her hammer was supposed to be a symbol of unity even before she had it.

Very enjoyable video, I think you're absolutely correct that the lore needed a character to stand in opposition to the oppression, Demacia subjects its citizens to. You did surprise me with a bad take though - when you talked about Sylas' design being that of a rabble-rouser and a brawler, rather than that of a visionary firebrand, it seemed you failed to acknowledge those two are not, in any way, mutually exclusive. It's a very prevalent fallacy to split revolutionaries into groups of high-headed, "dignified", non-violents and angry, violent rioters. It allows the structures of power to point to the former group and say "look, they're doing it 'the right way' " in an attempt to dissuade the latter group from forming. Often because the latter group demands a response. Or in other words: Sylas isn't supposed to be Voltaire, he's supposed to be Spartacus. Still, excellent video, thoroughly enjoyed it. You're my primary window into the LOL lore so thanks for all your effort =]

This is the first champion in quite a while that I *REALLY* dont like, especially his ultimate. The idea of a spell stealing champion can work just fine, in fact it can work extremely well when done properly, the biggest (and really only) example being Dota's Rubick. But Rubick's ultimate works a lot better, because of how his opponents can play around it. Rubick can steal any spell at all, his ult is point and click and steals the last spell cast. This means that if he wants to steal a big enemy ultimate, he has to grab it before they cast something else after it to stop him from getting it. It means that Rubick and his opponents have to play around that short window of time, but most importantly it means that Rubick cannot use an enemy ultimate in a fight unless he stole it a while prior, or unless theyve already used it in that fight. It makes it feel less oppressive for them, and much more rewarding for him. Sylas' is just a point and click ult steal with no interaction between either players. He can take ults for free without his enemies having to use them beforehand, or really do anything at all. Theres basically no counterplay to it, and it kinda sucks. Not to mention hes the kinda champion that has a pretty basic kit otherwise to facilitate a super powerful ultimate, whilst having no actual ultimate of his own.
@diegosaez4885
@diegosaez4885 5 жыл бұрын
I do agree with the argument of such an ultimate ability requires a simplistic kit both for balance and being open to synergyze with any ultimate he copies, but there's an issue with your argument: His kit is indeed basic, but even still is overloaded. One of his main balance issues right now is that his innate doesn't have a cooldown, the Q slows too much, and that both is terrible to have an offensive champion have both a shield and a heal and that both of them scale obscenely. As a consequence of that, and the ult's ability of converting AD ratios into AP ratios, he comes as too oppressive. He'll use your ult better than you, and if he's building glass cannon he'll oneshot you, and if he's building as a bruiser he'll be artificially tanky so frequently that you'll die before he does.

How is it imbalanced that he steals ultimates? Ultimates have counterplay themselves, it's not like he's completely changing how the ultimate works, if he uses zed ult it would work the same way as if you were playing against a zed ulting you, I really don't get your point

I felt like Sylas is a weak design. it reminds me too much of the stereotypical scruffy handsome guy, just like hanzo or Nathan Drake. when I saw him I just expected a guy that broke free and lived a life of an outcast, a bit like Yasuo, but without the personal history that make him work. all about him is about his chains, he has nothing clearly magical, and overall is just a guy with chains that seems to have been in prison for 2 weeks. I think the lack of defining traits except for his chains do more harm than good. sure, in game you know instantly he will whip with it, but that's about it, no hint about the ult, no hint about his objectives, he is just a good looking guy with chains.

One way riot can fix the chains situation as him being an ideological leader and not just some guy that just escaped from prison is by releasing a skin with him in a suit or something of the sort, with a trailer of him putting the chains on to go to war. Sort of like he’s gone beyond just a prisoner and is actually a revolutionary and only uses the chains as a weapon and maybe even a symbol of the demasian oppression.

What do you think of the idea that Sylas actually managed to start a rebellion and managed to "kill the king" as in his voice line (maybe a larger storyline spanning multiple shorts)? It wouldn't cause the problem of killing off any existing champions. Then when Jarvan IV becomes king and tries to enact reform Sylas would have to face issues like is a better king and slowish reform a good enough result, or does the whole Damacian kingdom need to be toppled? Jarvan trying to soften on the mage hate could also bring conflict with Garen, especially with the previous king being killed by a mage adding to Garens issues with magic, and an opportunity for another short that Sylas doesn't even need to appear in. But yeah, I agree that Riot probably won't want to shake things up that much.
@queenofglory4089

I honestly hope that he keeps being destructive because I think Lux would be the perfect leader to guide demacia to mage acceptance while defeating Sylas. Lux is everything a Demacian is and she is also a mage proving that mages belong in Demacia too. And I hope conflict stirs up between Lux and Sylas where it is shown to Demacians that there are both good and bad mages and I want for people to support Lux because Demacians would finaly realise that they don't want to prison mages but that they want to prison *evil* mages...you know...like they imprision bad people. And through all that Sylas can see and realise something. Hell, have him win that fight but have him also have a change of heart or at least let that conflict depict accurately. Not as an oppressed mage but as oppressed evil power hungry communist manipulative mage. That way Lux, Sylas and Demacia get a makeover.

My bets are on J4, as he is willing to bring change to how Demacia treats magic, maybe he will be recruited? and then later it could be set up with Garen vs J4, maybe Garen vs Lux all sorts of different stuff could happen I believe.
