What’s the difference between a fixed lens and a varifocal lens? A fixed lens (prime lens) means the size of the lens limits the distance the camera can see. A varifocal lens (zoom lens) has zoom capabilities that help a camera see clearly from further distances.
The standard lens size for security cameras is 2.8mm. In general, every millimeter in lens size gives you 10 ft. in recognition and identification. A 2.8mm fixed lens security camera will cover 28 ft. minus the height from which it was mounted.
A varifocal lens is motorized and can typically be controlled through software or mobile app. A Standard varifocal lenses range in size from 2.8mm to 12.5mm. This will give your security camera a range of 28 ft. to 125 ft. of recognition and identification.
