Trying out porcelain on the wheel vs. stoneware. Most people either love it or hate it. Rarely will you find a potter that works with both porcelain and stoneware. Why is that? Let’s find out!

I LOVE PORCELAIN! All my friends at pottery class think I am bonkers liking it! 😜 only think I don’t like is how much it shrinks! Stoneware is ok but I find I have to fight with it to tell it what to do! 😂

Just goes to show how important it is to have options!!! I have worked more with this clay and find it comes from the store too wet. That has helped. Thanks for commenting!

Hello dear, thank you so much for this video. This is making my life easier. I have a question though - at what speed is porcelain best possible to pull up. Please share your experiences. Many thanks again!
@CallUsTemily
@CallUsTemily 2 жыл бұрын
No problem! Thank you for watching! In my experience, the best wheel speed changes based on how much clay you’re working with and how far away from center the clay is. Smaller amounts of clay need to go faster than larger amounts of clay because they are closer to the center. In the same way a 2lb bowl needs to go slower than a 2 lb tumbler because the bowl is further from center. So try a 3 step approach based on how far the clay is from center when pulling. In all these steps small amounts need more speed than large amounts. 1= centering this is the fastest speed you’re comfortable with, and can maintain control. 2= slow the wheel speed to pull up the walls into a cylinder 3= slow the wheel speed again to make the cylinder into a bowl or plate. 4= keep me posted on how it goes! ☺️

I worked with Emily’s parents at their bakery and the way I would describe working with this clay is: it is like throwing with bread dough. Especially what was left on my hands from the slip would turn to a flakey mess just like the bread dough did as you kneaded it.

It could the type of porcelain you are using. I live in the UK and have always used Harry Frasers Porcelain but i struggle with throwing it and use another porcleain by scarva which i find much easier. Porcelain has a huge memory and you have to be quick, determined and pull it in only a few pulls.

That’s awesome. I am going to experiment some more with this. I am learning so much and it is so much fun to learn. I have heard that the clay in the UK will take a lot more water than it will over here. Someday I will have to make a trip just to play in mud 🤪. What cone do you fire to? This is a cone 6 porcelain and it’s hard to find a vitreous cone 6 porcelain, but i bought it because I was able to talk to the formulator of this clay. I am excited to be trying out a clay with more grog in it soon! thanks for watching!

@@CallUsTemily i fire to cone 9/10 but i have never fired low fire porcelains. Some are easier to throw than others and some are not as wet as others. There are a lot of porcelain clays out there so don't be discouraged - you just have to find the one that suits you best. I try not to use a lot of water in my throwing but that has its own drawbacks too. goodluck on your clay journey and i hope to make it over here to play in the mud too!

Don't get discouraged with it! I have thrown mugs with it. I went from a really aggressive stoneware to t mix 6 and I love it. All in the timing.

Great to know! I am not through messing with it for sure. I will make up some hand built things, test tiles, and fairy houses and may go back to the wheel after seeing it fired. Is it your main clay? How does your time schedule work with it?

@@CallUsTemily I am a night shift nurse. Sometimes I handle the same day. Sometimes I have to cover with plastic and wait a couple days. I can't always get it right but that is more due to bizarre schedule. T mix 6 is my main clay. I use it with and without grog. I hand build with it a lot since I hurt my shoulder. I am still a beginner didn't even realize it was considered a porcelain clay. I figured it was on the same lines as b mix. It fires really white. I love the look of underglaze and clear glaze. It plays well with most glazes I have tried. It has been very forgiving of my accidental over firings. I just bought other clays like Buffalo wallow and laguna speckled buff. The first clay I bought was stoneware which was heavily grogged. Then I bought t mix 6. I learned how to throw on the wheel using it. I think if I had any problems I might have attributed it to just learning. Itbis all I have used on my channel

@@CallUsTemily also I use ribs. Wooden, metal and rubber ribs. I find if I pull up and then clean off the slip with a rib and then keep going.

Well if you can’t laugh at yourself life isn’t nearly as fun! I don’t doubt it was too wet! Thanks for the tip, I will expire that next time I get some. It seems like there’s such a fine line with this clay between too wet and not wet enough. Always learning.
