What's the Difference Between Sorghum Syrup and Molasses?

In this video I discuss the differences between sorghum syrup and molasses in some detail. Most of my life I called the sorghum syrup we made "molasses" but by the strictest definition it isn't. The standard answer where "molasses is a byproduct of sugar manufacture" doesn't do it for me.

I can't completely agree with this unless the molasses I have here is mislabeled. I currently have some McCutcheon's unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses, it's a bit thinner than the thicker variety I had when I was younger. I grew up eating the really dark, black colored molasses with my grand father with butter mixed in it for dipping biscuits. I have some black strap in my cabinet now and it's really strong flavored by still very sweet, i can put a spoon in it and eat it straight. Tastes good to me!

Everyone has different tastes. Maybe I was a little too hard on molasses. A lot of people seem to be mad with me about that. You should try sorghum syrup, it might taste even better to you. I haven't tried any sugar cane molasses that tasted as good to me as sorghum, but then again I have had some sorghum that I didn't like either.

molasses does too taste good! Ok. An acquired flavor. Sure. But it is only a bit of bitterness amidst all the sweetness. Extremely easy to get used to. Especially when putting on fresh baked southern style biscuits, with butter! Especially on toasty toast toasted! With butter! I use it in place of maple syrup and honey. Just like the ancient American colonists did. Because it is cheap. And actually yes you completely incorrect. You ARE supposed to eat black strap molasses raw, if you want to. It purely personal preference. Also, finally, you did not even upload the entire video? The video cut out at 5 minutes? While I was typing this? You might be a low subscriber channel but surely it is not too difficult to upload an entire video? Anyways, whatevs. Blackstrap molasses! Fantastic bitter sweetness for toast and butter and biscuits and butter! For breakfast! With eggs and applewood bacon!

I did accidentally cut the video off early. The KZfaq editor isn't precise enough, especially on my phone. The point I was trying to make is that if you tried molasses, like I have, and didn't like it because of the bitterness or flavor, don't be scared to try sorghum syrup, because it tastes different and probably better. Thanks for watching the video, I hope you have a great day.

“grandma’s brand” molasses with the yellow label is in ALL major grocery stores in the USA, readily available. What in the world are you talking about?!?!😂 Also, you typed this comment on a smart phone app! On the internet! Ever heard of ummmmmmmmm Amazon! All the things available at your fongertips! For purchase! At a moment’s notice! Sir I assure you, molasses jars ARE NOT hard to find, in America, in any grocery store or on the internet. I say this to you, sir, respectfully, sir, as a millennial who is half your age and who buys molasses every single month at my local grocery because I just love molasses in general. I use it as my primary sweetener for most everything. Therefore to summarize, you are completely incorrect, molasses jars are not hard to find, at all, in America, ESPECIALLY given that, we can order literally everything on the internet, just as I can comment at you, right here and now, on some random youtube channel.

Sorghum syrup is an intentionally made sweetener. Molasses is an industrial by-product.

While you're right, I never felt like that explanation really answered the question adequately. When sweet sorghum varieties were first imported from Africa, people hoped it could be a domestic source of refined sugar to reduce reliance on cane sugar from the tropics. That didn't work out because sucrose crystals aren't easily extracted from sorghum juice, but they made the best of the situation.

Sucrose = fructose +glucose
@jeffplumblee6376
@jeffplumblee6376 6 ай бұрын
True. Glucose and fructose also exist separately. Per wikipedia: "Boiling the sugar syrup a third time yields dark, viscous blackstrap molasses ('C' Molasses), known for its robust flavour. During this process, the majority of sucrose from the original juice is crystallized and removed."
