So what's the difference between Tape, Analog and Digital delay? In this video I explore 3 fine examples of each and discuss their strengths and weaknesses.
This is NOT a sponsored video, I purchased all 3 pedals and have no affiliation with T-Rex, TC Electronic or Boss.

Product Info:
TC Electronic Flashback 2
The new Flashback 2 serves up a sonic buffet of expressive delay by infusing the pressure sensitive MASH technology with our renowned delay algorithms.
We completely redeveloped our Tape and Analog algorithms from scratch, recreating the tones of old school echoes with unheard realism, including every little eccentric behavior inherent in those legendary designs.
We also squeezed in a shimmering Crystal delay, made with our own polyphonic octave algorithm from Sub 'N' Up into Flashback 2.
And finally, with 3 Tone Print slots in total, you get more flexibility than ever, and all the legendary delay sounds that TC Electronic are famous for.
Boss DM-2w
The original BOSS DM-2 Delay pedal is one of the pantheons of the guitar world. It was the first ever analog delay pedal to be fit into a compact pedal chassis, and importantly had a characteristic warm delayed sound that didn’t intrude on the original guitar signal.
The BOSS Waza Craft DM-2W delay pedal brings back all the glory of its 1980’s era forerunner, using analog BBD circuitry to accurately recreate the lush tones that made the original DM-2 famous.
In STANDARD mode, the DM-2W provides a dead-on recreation of the original DM-2 sound, complete with its ability to send itself into self-oscillating chaos. Switching to CUSTOM mode adds some new Waza Craft tweaks that bring the DM-2W into the modern age. The available delay time is doubled to 800ms, and the delayed tone is given a slightly clearer voicing.
T-Rex Replicator D'luxe
The Replicator D’Luxe is a sum up from all the knowledge T-REX have built up over the years making Tape delays.
It is a 2-head machine. The drive mechanism has been updated with a noiseless belt drive. A tape lock/release mechanism is added, to make the pinch wheel and tape last longer and the electronics has been tuned to perfection.
One Record head and two playback heads. Short Head for slap back delay. Long head for longer modern delays, or combine both heads for a semi Delay-Room experience.

I appreciate the level of detail in your descriptions of each pedal - nothing extraneous, nothing missed - and I love your playing. You did some noodling around the 5:30 mark that I will be going back to listen to again… and again. Subscribed!!!

Wow! Excellent video, and hands down the best explanation of analog delay that I've ever heard, both as what it technically is, and why a player would choose it. I've heard the term "bucket brigade" used on channels such as JHS and That Pedal Show and I always assumed it was like a company or a brand or something. You explained it here brilliantly. That T-Rex tape delay unit is intriguing. When I first started out as a teenager many years ago, I was in a band with an older member who had an old tape delay unit and, well.. when it worked it was great, but yeah, a lot of people get really romantic over old gear, but it was simply not reliable and it always seem to fail during the most important gigs. For those on a budget who'd like to dip their toe into the tape delay sound, I can't recommend highly enough the Nu-X Tape Core Deluxe pedal. I bought one over a year ago -- roughly AU$125 or so... super inexpensive. It's based on the Roland Space Echo unit and replicates the three-head system that that thing had (and you can engage and disengage all the "tape heads" in seven different combinations on the pedal). Super warm tapey sound and that spacey feedback whacko thing (though it doesn't do the modulation on repeat). A really surprising unit though, I love it to bits. Subscribed.

Great video….I had an old EP-3 all thru the 80’s….lots of maintenance, but that thing was magic…I have never heard a digital emulation sound exactly the same…I love analog delays too,but my preference for awhile, has been vintage digital delays..like the old rack delays from the 80’s….2290..SDD 3000..MXR Rack Delay, etc…They all sound great, and have their own thing going on….So in my opinion, you gotta have all 3!!..

I use a Digital Delay (Boss DD3T) and I found out that if you roll the Delay Time up to maximum and add Reverb to the sound you get space echo sound and they both add a lot of bottom end to the notes you're playing and if you add Destortion, and Fuzz to that you get A much thicker and heavier sound but that's not recomended for Humbuckers because it makes it sound like Robotic feet marching if you catch my drift

Great video. I love it. I am very happy to have found this channel. It was a very exciting accident. I do not like to subscribe to just any channel. There is to much "Content" out there that just does not suit my interest. This does, as I was born in 1961. This could be the reason having grown up to see the developments. I am an analog type of person, as there are many of us, from that time period that sees Line 6 as overpriced & disturbing.

@@JasonAyalaSpare around 1978. I remember playing along to the first U2 album with it. I got it from a junk shop. One thing it could do that the T Rex can't, there was a spring loaded tensioner for the tape loop. You could poke it and introduce a massive wobble to the echo, which sounded just like the end of a track on the 1st or 2nd Roxy Music album

I still don't know exactly. I compared a ds1 distortion from a zoom digi pedal with a real one. And though the digi sounded real usefull and close, it was not the same. So I follow your opinion also for delay. But you have to choose wich ones you buy analog. Can' t buy them all. Reverb seems less important to have digital. Or am I wrong ? Still thinking about a Timeline and maybe one soft repeat analog delay like a memory toy or aquapuss.

@@JasonAyalaSpare I m gonna buy the Timeline . The Mako D1 looks very good too. But Timeline has extra's : analog and tape apart. Smear function wich still sounds better then the attack knob of the D1. And vinyl crackling, megaphone filter etc. I like more shoegaze music. Do you have suggestions for me ? I have the NUX atlantic already. Really nice, especially the parrallel function. But not enough.

Another articulate video and very enjoyable. Congrats once again on the milestone Jason. 😎 Never owned a 'real' tape delay, but use them all on my source audio collider. Agree with your thoughts here & the 'fact' regarding gear is important to take into account. I use digital the least, partly due to my ears it often doesn't sound very natural or it's kinda cold. That is, it just sounds like an effect. That's not to say I don't use it at all, more that it's less of my style. I've often wanted to get a Deco mostly for the compression/saturation, just never think I'd get the value of all its capabilities, which are best used subtly I reckon. Otherwise, I kinda have its other features somewhat covered. Cheers. 🎸🎸🎸

For me, analog is generally the best sound for slap. I actually love digital for longer delays. I don't use delay as a drastic effect as is often done in modern music. I use delay where the repeats sit very low in the mix under my tone, to add space and depth when I want a bigger, prettier sound for ballads and things. About 80 percent of the time DO NOT have delay on. Tape delay sounds amazing, but for how I use delay, it would be difficult to even hear the difference between tape and digital. To me, tape and digital are both brighter delays, unless of course the tape is old and degraded. Analog is dark and has more individual character from one analog delay pedal to another. A good analog delay slapback on a guitar tone at the edge of breakup is a wonderful sound for rockabilly and more modern country tones. Other than that, I like clean and pristine echos.
