I'm a retired hobby gardener in Oliver, B.C. Even though I have no intention to grow commercially, I do find your videos and even helpful for my operation which probably grows the most expensive vegetables in North America! I've been thinking for years of erecting a small greenhouse but I've always been reluctant to do that because of the "valley cloud" that sets in every winter from December through to February. I'm sure that Kelowna has the same conditions. Doesn't this require you to supplement a significant amount of heat and light for your operations?

In a previous life I supervised poultry farms. They use a lot of the same technology that big production green houses use. Each poultry house used ten 48 inch fans and a massive evaporative cooling system that was controlled by a computer originally developed for use in greenhouses.

Hey Curtis is that a new led grow light your testing? We use led's connected to a light meter and they kick on and off to boost light levels in our greenhouse in scotland, (so on a lot) if it falls below or above a set level, basically the same idea as you just described with your heating and cooling in the greenhouse. good on the shoulder seasons and winter. love that thermometer, I have a similar one but it's nowhere near that big, looks like an old fashion barometer from a ship.

TheJunkyardgenius Which lights are you using?
@TheJunkyardgenius
@TheJunkyardgenius 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Meise there is a lot of conflicting information out there about led and huge differences in prices, we tried all the cheap options before considering lights that cost hundreds for a single unit. basically they all worked, you just have to use them differently, e.g. height above crop etc. we even found the really cheap leds that come on a flexible roll/strip worked when we made them into a panel light. we found the best results tho, come from what is an external flood light 10 or 20 watt which sounds low but the amount of light is huge. just made sure they are 6500k. They are ip55 rated so able to be used in wet conditions We have them every 2 or 3 feet depending on the crop. We grow mostly greens so these lights are more than sufficient and we have had huge success with them so there was no need for us to look past them at the higher costing lights. If you were growing fruiting crops then this might not be the light to use but for our purposes it works a treat. We are even building a fully enclosed unit you can have a garage or a shed and grow which is like a chest of drawers, all in compost and light and watering is automated.

Hi Curtis, I'm looking at setting up an urban farm in the next few years with possibly between 1/4 and 1/3 of an acre. My worry is the prices you seem to sell your produce at seem a lot higher than the average of what they sell at in my country (UK). A head of Cauliflower here is £1 ($1.76 cad) at most farmers markets and around 50p (88c cad) for a kilo of carrots. I'd imagine these prices are due to all the neighbouring EU countries with cheap imports. Would you say its unlikely to profit from these prices?
@StaarveyFarm
@StaarveyFarm 6 жыл бұрын
I am in UK (Isle of Man). Dont' let UK prices put you off, supermarkets have driven the bulk prices down BUT there is a demand for quality, locally grown produce, and if they get to know you that is a bonus. As Curtis has said before, look at your market - CSA, Restaurants, farmers markets .... I started with 2 or 3 good restaurants just growing a mixture of salad greens- mizuna, mustards etc, now I have 6 big tunnels and do all sorts.
@hodgepodgetv7844
@hodgepodgetv7844 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. You're right, its far too easy to get discouraged when looking at our supermarket prices. Would love to see some videos of your farm if you ever put something up :-). I would imagine living in the IOM you have slightly less imported food and maybe a bit more scope for this sort of thing, but I suppose with hard work and contacts it would be possible to do anywhere!

I have been struggling with growing in the San Antonio Texas area, the intensity of the sun and higher humidity in the summers are brutal, I’m from NE Oregon where its Hot and dry in the summer 105F- 110F but the latitude there make the sun so much different. Cory Snyder my main issue has been with tomatoes and lettuce. Root crops haven’t been to much of a problem as long as they don’t get too much water. I’ve looked at suggestions from Texas A&M for tomatoes varieties that have good tolerance to this climate and am going to try them this year. I have pretty much decided to just give up on August and September its too brutal.

I’m a gardener in Fort Worth, doing research on expanding to martlet gardening or farming. On a small scale (12’x24’) I built a hoop house and used shade cloth over it (instead of plastic) and my plants continue to produce in August and September. I only needed to water about 2x a week. That said, I also used several permaculture methods too.
