I'm from North Carolina, and when I was in the fourth grade, my class took a field trip to the cigarette factory in Winston Salem to see how cigarettes are made. We took a tour, and after the tour was over, they gave us children stickers, notebooks and pencils with cigarette brand logos on them, and packs of candy cigarettes. We also went to Old Salem where we saw how they lived in olden times. I remember that they had this bakery and we all got a cookie, even though I was already full from two packs of candy cigarettes.

Back in my younger days I drank the “prairie fire”. It’s a shot of tequila, no salt or lime, with enough hot sauce (usually tobasco) to turn it dark red. Heat covered the bite of the tequila, and the bite of the tequila covered the heat. Goes down very smooth 🥃🥃🍺🍺🍻🍻. Was my go-to drink for three or four rounds when I first hit the bar, then switched to beer. Man I miss those days! Bathrooming hurt the next day.

To me, The ultimate North Carolina experience would have to be sitting on a bench in Mayberry (Downtown Mount Airy), with Texas Pete, Bojangles chicken/biscuits, A Cookout tray, a Krispy Kreme doughnut, and some Cheerwine, listening to somebody playing Bluegrass outside of Floyd’s barborshop.
