GNOME only clicked for me when I used a Macbook as my main computer for a while. Its not similar, but I think using a completely different UI for so long made me more flexible. Nowadays, even though I'm currently back at Windows, GNOME is my favorite desktop experience across all desktop OSs. I love how it uses no space on the display when working, I love how pressing the meta key shows me everything going on, I love how smooth and stable it is.

The thing is for me even a used laptop costs too much, so what I've done is buy a 20 buck 256gb usb flash drive and installed endeavouros on that and set that drive as the default boot on our laptop. That way my mom can still use the windows install on the internal drive unimpeded while I can just experiment with whatever distro I want that installs easy to the external usb drive. Its way way cheaper than buying an entirely separate device to experiment on.

I ended up buying a dell latitude 5400, latitude is dells version of lenovo thinkpad, its been amazing, i paid around 180 bucks for it in december and its got a 4 core 8 thread 8th generation i5 chip and it runs amazingly, backlit keyboard, 1080p screen, camera blocker switch, "thinkpoint" mouse pointer in the middle, 2 upgradabable ram slots, comes with 8gb. the thinkpad comparison is the t480s which runs for over 300 where i live, so yeah its been great. I also run endeavour OS on it, ive been "desktop enviroment hopping" on it with endeavourOS lol, cant decide between I3 window manager or a traditional DE like gnome or KDE. Lol, I used manjaro on my desktop back in 2022 for a few days, it broke and i managed to fix it but i didnt want that to happen again, I think i may have had the same issue that you had but yeah. Id love to have one of those framework laptops too, they look great.

A boy becomes an EndeavourOS man. No really--I wouldn't normally recommend people use Arch as a first-timer desktop distro, but I've always enjoyed how flexible it is and how well-curated the AUR has gotten. Makes finding a lot of otherwise obscure, source-only software much more accessible. But of course, only someone like me would be one to care about that. 🙃 In the end, Arch is a learning experience; you grow to either love and appreciate it for everything it's taught you... or wish it burned in hell for that one time a GRUB update locked you out of your computer for seemingly no good reason. Side note: If you're going to use Arch, following the Arch-announce mailing list is almost a soft-requirement to have a smooth experience just because it warns in advance if a dependency or app update needs extra care. It really isn't as bad as I might make it sound tbh, these warnings tends to happen maybe once a year and mostly affects like server users, but still, something to know. Also, pretty gnarly phone you got there. :)

I originally liked Manjaro because I thought its unique package distribution system would help mitigate issues with rolling-release Linux. However, I eventually stopped using it because I didn't like the security issues and package issues. I did like the the "closer" Arch derivatives like Antergos (RIP), Archbang, and EndeavourOS more because they acted like Arch installers with sane defaults. Eventually, however, I stopped using Arch & its derviatives altogether because I wanted a more "mainstream" Linux distribution with easier support for AppArmor / SELinux and a standard packaging format like DEB or RPM. My family burned through laptops, so I got a bunch of hand-me-down computers as a kid; they were perfect testbeds for exploring different OSes. I like GNOME's ecosystem more than KDE's, but I think KDE's huge suite of applications and customizations are better than GNOME's.

Nice! Im glad you tried out endeavourOS, thats the distro that I learned a lot on when first starting because of how barebones it is. I remember I had recommended it to you a while back but because it was arch based you were hesitant.
