What's Under Antarctica's Ice Sheets?

Many of us know Antarctica as a land of ice and not much else. But hidden beneath the miles of glaciers and ice sheets lies a landmass that was last exposed 40 million years ago.
What does this land look like, and what could we expect to find if we are still around to see what's under Antarctica's ice sheets.
I forgot to mention that under the Antarctic treaty, mining is TECHNICALLY prohibited on Antarctic, but that expires in around 30 years, and it's uncertain whether or not it will be renewed. Plus this is all theoretical anyway and would take place over many hundreds of years, if not thousands.

Living in Canada, I was encouraged by how many times he said "similar to Canada" until it was pointed out that it was basically going to be post-glacial bedrock dotted with lakes. Do we take resources (oil, diamonds, other precious gems, uranium) from countries that cannot stop us with military force?? Do we take it anyway??? Is a man taking sexual advantage of a woman, or forcing her to have sex with him considered rape???? Don't reprimand a 52 year old woman. You look a little young to be doing that. Let a person know you don't like their comment, or vote a thumbs down, but don't call me disgusting and shameful. You have NO idea what has happened to me in my life. Hey, for the shape of Antarctica without ice, did you consider the 60m rise of sea level or is it at current sea level ?
@philb8437
@philb8437 2 жыл бұрын
@PGH Engineer I understand the isostatic rebound will make the land higher, but the water level would also rise. If lets say the isostatic rebound makes the land rise by 200m and the water level raises by 60m, So net water line on the land raises 140m. This 60m difference between isostatic and isostatic + water level makes for a different coastline profile. Take as an exemple the models of the current worldwide coastlines vs coastlines with a 60m water level increase. Some places change drastically, for example Floride pretty much completely disappears from the map. This is why I'm wondering if it was considered, the coastline and therefore outside shape will be different.

For those confused, flat earthers think the earth is a disk with the north pole at the center, and the antarctic isn't a continent but a giant ring of ice. Depending on what "theory" they believe in either the wall is holding in the oceans or hide other lands on the other side.

If you are going to make assumptions regarding the melting of the ice sheet it should be stated over what time period. It's fine to mention the catastrophic effect of a rapid melting, but it should be noted that if the event is spread over millennia (as is more likely) ecosystems (and man) will have time to adapt...as has happened when this event has occurred in the past.
@MisterVercetti
@MisterVercetti 2 жыл бұрын
This, so much. Overall, the end effects would be far less catastrophic than the climate change Chicken Littles would have you believe. Mankind and the rest of the world's life will adapt, and life will go on. The elites aren't worried about the environmental or ecological impact; they're worried that they're about to lose a lot of prime coastal real estate, nothing more.

over 1000s of years the land would rise up a bit. i.e. not fast enough to offset the water rising.

I wonder what Antartica's climate and weather would look like if there was no ice. Seems like a funky mix of mountains and big lakes

@Grant C. Ever heard of Exxon mobil and your allies’ oil companies Shell and BP setting up their oil derricks in Iraq after USA invaded Iraq (Ee-raak, not eye-rack by the way)? Ever heard how CIA plotted against democratically elected minister Mossadegh in Iran (Ee-raan, not eye-ran) and set up a puppet government just because Mossadegh had the ’’nerve’’ of suggesting that Iranian oil should be nationalized? You probably haven’t because you are never taught this in the west. Your education system teaches you how you are superior to everyone else.

I just hope that if people poke around under the ice they don't release some ancient viruses or bacterial spores that nothing living currently has any immunity against. A change in the ocean conveyor would change climates. I like that people can now grow coral in aquariums so the ocean could be re-seeded. One other question is haw much dormant volcanic activity would be released if the weight of the ice cap were removed. Being on the South Pole, it would still likely have immense water and wind currents constantly surrounding it.
