2:56 Wheat vs. rice
In this video, I want to answer a question from someone who wanted to know which is healthier: rice or wheat. Neither rice nor wheat is keto-friendly. But, I wanted to cover what would be healthier, just so you have the data.
White Rice
• no hull, no bran, no germ (pure carbohydrate)
• Glycemic index: 77
• It's enriched with synthetic vitamins - B1, B2, B3, folic acid, iron
One of the problems with consuming white rice is you're at risk of potentially developing a condition called Beri Beri (vitamin B1 deficiency). This is a neurological disease that can create all sorts of problems with the nerves, pulse rate, memory, and blood sugars.
Brown Rice
• Has no hull
• Has bran and germ (less refined)
• Glycemic index: 68
Wild Rice
• It has the hull, the bran, and the germ
• It has a lot more nutrition
• Glycemic index: 52
Wheat
• White flour glycemic index: 77-no nutrition, enriched with synthetic vitamins
• Whole wheat glycemic index: 72- has the bran, fiber, germ, carbohydrate
Wheat has more calcium, more B3, and zinc. Wheat has gluten, which many people are allergic or intolerant to. It also has phytic acid, lectins, and glyphosate.
Rice has less calcium but more folic acid. There's no gluten in rice. Brown rice and wild rice both have phytic acid. Rice also has lectins, and can even have arsenic.
Wild rice may be the healthiest option. But, if you're on the keto plan, which I recommend, then you shouldn't be consuming any rice.

Avoid rice that are grown in the U.S. They have high levels of Arsenic. If you eat rice that are imported from Thailand, Vietnam, and/or India, you should be fine. The same can be said with eating pasta. Pastas that are produced in the U.S. have Glyphosate (aka Roundup) but pastas that are imported from Italy have no Glyphosate. Eating rice and pasta are not bad per se provided that you know where they are being produced.

Yes my grandparents and their parents (in Scandinavia) all thrived and lived quite long good lifes on a diet of mainly potatoes, bread, meat and milk products. Of course they had to work very hard also with growing their own food and raising their own animals. But what I believe is the main problem today is that most of our food are destroyed by over processing/refining, all the use of chemicals and our depleted soils. So let's say you're making your own bread with organic whole grain (preferably all 4 sorts) powder, let it yeast (or sour dough) properly, I think it will be perfectly healthy. No one has convinced me otherwise so far.. and you can make it even better by adding linseeds, nuts, dried fruits etc. That way you'll have an amazing yummy bread! :P

@@germanmayorga1481 You have an idealistic view of third world countries. Usually those people are not well educated, so they follow the trends of first world countries, but using not regulated pesticides. So city folk end up eating those chemicals. Any genetically modified plant that is introduced into the environment will eventually end up in other people's farms. Also, most poor people in third world countries will just eat whatever they can eat. That's usually the least expensive food, like cookies, lots of caloric junk. Even farmers can't get a more balanced diet since they usually specialize in one type of plant. There are many programs just to give food for the children of those communities since they can't get the necessary nutrients to grow. And those include basic stuff like flour and oil. But they receive no vegetables since they can spoil. I have lived my whole life in a third world country, and we had recollections of food on my school every few months.

Our grandparents lived a healthier lifestyle, were more active and hard working folk, were content with themselves, emotionally happier people than I think this generation are... just my thoughts 💭 No matter how carb free, keto, wheat free, low fat, fat free, ect.... if u not emotionally happy and balanced your stressful life and personal unhappiness will create all kinds of diseases like cancer, diabetes, high bp ect.... I lived a toxic rat race lifestyle which brought me higher education and more money but it also brought disease and sickness.... once I stopped and had a good look at myself and my bad situation... I started changing ALOT of things.... I still eat rice in moderation 3 or 4 times a week, some bread, once or twice a month takeout..... but im thinner than I used to be when I lived a toxic rat race life style..... izurite if you think that then clearly you have a very poor understanding of the video and nutrition in general, you should educate yourself more on what nutrition was decades ago and what it is today, how lifestyle factors such as exercise and stress impact the human body. You can eat all the keto foods you want but if you have an unhealthy mind, life full of stress ect then it does your body little favor bcoz all of those factors contribute to a variety of diseases and obesity. Combating obesity is a multi prong approach not just only food. You should watch all of Dr Bergs videos where he explains what nutrition was decades ago and what it is now, he provides a wealth of knowledge on various foods, how they are currently produced and they were produced years back.

I did a deep dive recently about wheat and all the bad stuff it brings with it. There’s lots of medical info on this, it’s well documented. My major takeaway is that if you want inflammation scattered all over your body, leaving the glucose and celiac issues aside, eat wheat. I never realized that such a common ingredient can bring so many terrible issues with it. The grocery aisles are so full of crap, wheat, high fructose syrups, preservatives, artificial flavorings. It enough to make you stick to the outside aisles and just eat Whole Foods. It’s tough at first to stop the pastas, pizzas, rice and beans but the more you learn how bad they are for you, it’s easier to stay away from them.

I couldn’t stick with Keto! Especially the “eat loads of fat” thing. And constantly doing the maths on carb consumption. But I quit all wheat and white carbs... All processed sugar. I’ve been on a “semi Keto” or low carb for 6 months. I’m lovin’ it!! I eat a little brown rice noodles, brown basmati rice, buckwheat crackers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yam. Loads of fish plus olive oil, butter, avocados, Greek yoghurt, goats cheese... Don’t miss junky carbs one bit, plus I never feel ravenously hungry anymore. But enjoying food like never before Lost 11 kgs in 6 months and counting. Blood tests much healthier. Full Keto isn’t sustainable or even necessary for me...

@@inspiringminds7284 I stopped red meat about a year back and chicken 6 months ago... Nothing to do with health reasons really, I just don’t feel like eating factory farmed animals anymore. Plus the environmental impact of red meat is significant. Free range chicken is a good source of protein. In my opinion Beef isn’t such a good idea unless you can afford grass fed. I find it takes a long time to digest. If you enjoy meat I don’t think it will have any negative impact on weight loss or blood sugar. It’s the sugar in the grains that causes all the problems for me...

Also making cauliflower mash (potato mash) Cut up cauliflower into small to medium size pieces and steam for a few mins until fork tender and soft but not complete mush, add it whilst hot into a blender and add butter/cream/salt/black pepper/ any cheese you like and blitz afew times till all soft and creamy texture, garnish with chopped chives, spring onion, or more cheese if u want to grill in the oven Or just leave it as is. I promise you, it taste the same as mash potato using the above ingredients if you were to make a creamy mash or cheesy mash potatoes ect .... I actually did a blind test with my parents once, I made this using potatoes and one with cauliflower and I blind folded them and fed them with a spoon both of the mashes and asked them which potato mash is better? They both said it tastes the same! As a north Indian, I have had both white rice and whole wheat(100%) every day of my life. Also, almost no dish is singular i.e. almost every dish we make(usually some lentil curry or cooked vegetable, sometimes meat curry but it is rare) has to be eaten with either a flatbread or rice. Tbh, I have almost never had a meal where both are absent. I can only thing of lentil pancakes. I cannot imagine living without both unless i do a complete 180.

@@tea-chip-cookies that's why you lot are short and stout. Eat some wheat for height and get that bengali tummy back in. You're all portly and ugly by 40s. Not one handsome. tall, buff bengali man I can think of. Quit rice and your entire corrupted DNA will change like East Asians are now taller on average cause they eat breads, noodles, pasta apart from rice rice rice all day like losers. You all eat 70% food from carbs when humans need only 50% carbs per day. Diabetic tummy men.

😂 true. Also, still many prevailing thoughts of, "it's not a meal if there's no rice." Many Koreans eat rice in same broth as ramen after noodles are devoured. But also eat loads of, usually healthy, side dishes.

My Korean grandmother never ate 100% rice. She always added something to it, like soaked beans, chestnuts, ginko etc depending on the season. She also told me before the 60’s many people in Asia due to war and poverty considered white rice a luxury (she survived the Korean war). People used to eat rice mixed with barley and the rice was unprocessed and unbleached, so technically brown rice. Nowadays many Asians have diabetes and other metabolic issues because the rice people eat tend to be processed and white. Another thing about Asian rice is that it doesn’t have a high arsenic content compared to North American-grown rice. It is healthier to an extent

I'm now of the opinion that people - even siblings - have different reactions to precisely the same food. I seem to do worse than my own siblings to either wheat or rice. It's very hard, but absolutely necessary these days, to know how you react to any food - and then look for appropriate counter measures to use. For instance, I do better adding lots of veggies, protein, fats (including oils), and vinegar (acid) to rice. Conversely, nothing I do to wheat makes it any better for me. I'm best off avoiding it or, in a few cases such as in making savoury soups, using oats as an alternative.

Dr. I really enjoy the education you give us. Very enlightening. I had an opportunity to visit the rural settings in Tanzania called Ruaha. These people live on rice. They grow rice, eat rice for breakfast lunch snacks and dinner. for centuries. Its a laid back village dating long time but also there's a huge population of old people. Maybe could be coz they toil hard in the fields they remain healthy. So I believe that also lifestyles play a role.
