It’s a blast to watch. (Although I would have thought that you knew about the quote about the “thin, high mercury sound” that he liked so much on Blonde On Blonde.) Just a quibble. Great show.

Since, I prob have 50 Dylan albums. I now love to listen to his traditional albums (Good as I Been to You, World Gone Wrong). I'm going to pick up the new "Time Out of Mind" though I've always loved the original's sound...

Well done, sir. I have spent the weekend tracking through the Fragments box as well. I am not sure I like the remix as much as you do, but it is definitely an interesting listen. I'd like to see a remaster of the original release (preferably in hi-def audio), but for some reason I don't think that is ever going to happen. BTW, I liked the sound on the Guitars Kissing bootleg more than I did the official RAH release.

Steve I'm with you as a life long listener of all things Dylan as well as playing his songs, from this album, with a band. In 1997 I mainly listened to TOM in the car as i drove through the canefields and country side of rural NSW Australia. I think this melded the landscape and the music for me, but that's just my subjective take. Thanks for the very detailed review.

I discovered Bob Dylan in 1962 at the age of 15 and I am a lifelong fan. Thru my high school days, I purchased all his vinyl BUT not allowed (Old School Dad) at home to play them thru the speakers on the family RCA console speakers so initially listened thru my shortwave headset and finally a used pair of Koss Pro 4A headphones. At age 18 I finally had a car so Dylan on 8 Track with 6 speakers and a spring style reverb were added. Somewhere along the line, I memorized all the words to Subterranean Homesick Blues, which I can recite even now as my GrandKids know. I have noted that Dylan is not about his voice or in many cases the quality of the music, but, I contend that his words are those of a Nobel Laureate POET. With your observations and perspective today, as I'm retired, I'm going to go thru my complete collection of Dylan CD's in order of release. I will listen byway of a McIntosh CD player, a DIY 2 watt Single Ended Class A, Russian Boob Tube HeadPhone Amp and Sennheiser HD 58X Headphones with Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch of course. Yes Steve, you have inspired me to rediscover hidden secrets of Dylan, thank you.

Guttenberg on Dylan! I’m shocked, but pleasantly surprised that you reviewed his sound. I’ve been hooked on his music, and sound, for 50+ years. Through 2003 I owned more than 45 of his albums - but they were stolen by some common thief. Many of those albums were first issues. Some were rare imports - true bootlegs. Your review was great and insightful. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Rough and Rowdy ways.

Time Out of Mind definitely had a "Lanoised" sound, and while typically I prefer more naturalistic, less-cluttered production, I do like what he's done w/ Dylan, the Neville Brothers, U2, Luscious Jackson, and such; and Oh Mercy sounds great for Bob. For a VERY uncluttered Dylan sound, him really getting back to his roots, I recommend a pair of his early 90s recordings- 'Good as I been to You' and 'World Gone Wrong'- just Dylan w/ an amplified electric guitar, singing traditional works. His interpretations of them are awesome!

Just FYI, there were plenty of signals that we used to feed through organ and guitar speakers when we didn't want a precision, low-distortion sound. That was just part of the musical instrumentation. It's often true that, in an excellent, highly transparent and neutral listening environment like a control room in a studio, few things sound more out of place than a crystal-clear instrument that was not intended to be crystal-clear (hence the decades-long boom market in distortion pedals, etc.). And, if I had to pick a human vocal sound that I would guess that might also be true of, in the judgment of quite a few engineers, I would have Bob Dylan's at or near the top of that list. It doesn't surprise me at all that even a first-rate reinforcement or recording engineer might have his voice going through a guitar amp (or a Leslie without the motor on 😊).

Nice talk Steve. I turned my friends on to Dylan after I heard Like a Rolling Stone and then later, Desolation Row on the radio. We were into heavy rock at the time. Agreed, Blood on the Tracks was everything to me. There was no topping it. Every song was the best. After that album, other albums just seemed to be made because he was Bob Dylan. I never felt it again. With that said, my goal is to try to listen to his albums after BOTT. I have heard snippets of the Bootleg series and Desire. I'm sure that I can find songs to love.

When someone claims "Dylan can't sing," I know they don't know too much about singing. Or at least they have a miserly view of what constitutes good singing. “But I like the sound of him, I didn’t have to listen to his words...just the sound is what counts. The overall thing.” - John Lennon on Bob Dylan

I'm honestly not knocked out by the '22 remix of the album proper. It seems less dynamic than the original. And with the added clarity, if Bob goes off-pitch (which happens) it's far more obvious now. The original mix had a great "bounce" to it. So glad to get more outtakes of "Mississippi", one of my favorite Dylan songs of the last 40 years. He sure was on a hot streak with Time Out Of Mind / Love & Theft / Modern Times!

Listening to Dylan has been a big part of my life. He's almost exactly 20 years older than me. I started listening to him as a teenager and later in life I realized that I seemed to "really get" every album when I became the age that Dylan was when he recorded it. Time Out of Mine was a lot easier to appreciate in my mid-50's than it was in my mid-30's when it was released. The same with Oh Mercy. You have to have gone through certain things in life to appreciate these albums. I actually think that this says something good about Dylan's art. I'm also one of the few people who absolutely love Street Legal. I would love to see the out-takes released from this one.

"You have to have gone through certain things in life to appreciate these albums". Yes -- exactly! A portion of the liner notes are written by a young guy who somewhat condescendingly asserts "Time Out of Mind is not about mortality". Apparently, it's never occurred to him that he's simply not picking up on what's music

I was very excited when I heard about this (I just bought the 2 cd version), because it's such a great album but I've always disliked the murky production. The first time I played Fragments I was blown away-- it sounded so much more vivid and impactful, like I was actually hearing the musicians rather than the producer's idiosyncratic "vison" of how the music should sound. I posted a thread on audiogon expressing my enthusiasm and most guys who responded said they didn't hear much of a difference or that they even preferred the original mix. It's therefore very gratifying to know that you enjoy this as much as I do.

In rock ‘n roll terms, the 1966 Albert Hall performance of Baby Let Me Follow You Down stands out as a turning point in a year that brought us Revolver, Pet Sounds and Aftermath, among other canonical works. Dylan puts all the chips on the table. Loud. Raw. Real. In your face (a face most likely, at that time, blithely beaming in hopes of something a bit more cozy and campfire-friendly). Leaves the others, for all their enduring brilliance, seeming for a moment a bit undergraduate. A bit lingering too long by the punch bowl. A bit tame. Leaves your date wondering whether there will ever be real passion, not just smirky, smarmy games. I wasn’t even born then, but I still haven’t recovered.

Of all the “official’” Dylan bootleg albums this set of studio recordings (I didn’t care for the live stuff) is the most transformative from the original material. It is really like getting a new Dylan masterpiece in 2023. I have also converted most of the studio tracks into a 5.1 mix for an even more amazing experience. I am always amazed at people deriding Dylan’s voice - since he has so many voices throughout his career. I think the voice he uses on most of his albums could not be surpassed by any other singer. Who for example could have sung the songs on HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED, INFIDELS, FREEWHEELING or BLOOD ON THE TRACKS better than Dylan?

Been a long time Dylan fan and agree with all of what you said. For me Blood on the Tracks is hands down one of his best. Not just for the SQ but for the content. It's a brilliant recording. Lost track of how many times I've seen him live at the Beacon And MSG when this came out - I believe he opened with Cold Iron Bond - Joni Mitchell opened the show - she was great but the scale of the space was to big for her voice. Other than that is was a hysterical event. Hadn't been to the Garden in many years and hadn't realized how "civilized" it had become. LOL. Ah well. Streaming Fragments as I write this from Qobuz and yes!!!! It is much better than the original production.

I’m right there with you Steve. But you’re in the wrong city to see him at his best. You should fly down here to Nashville and see him play the Ryman Auditorium, (the mother church and cradle of great music)! I have lost count of how many times I’ve seen him play over the decades. But THAT album was a hugely different path! It’s another feather in his peacock of works! I’ve never had any complaints about the sound of it and thought it sounded better than most everything he’d done since “Infidels”! But yeah, now I’ve got to go get the box set. It just never ends! I recommend you hook some of those Cornwalls up to some McIntosh tubes and try another listen to the original!

“Blurry mess”??? Maaaan, you’re starting to go off the rails! It’s Dylan! If he wants it to sound a certain sound, they will come up with a way to give him what he wants. Hence, these albums are perfect just the way they are!

Could be interesting to see Bob Dylans stereo system 😊 Mr. Guttenberg ? - if he is into that - musicians often dont care about hi-fi .

I loved that album as much as any he's done. Do you mean that this set includes the original, just remixed?

The remixed (not remastered) Time Out of Mind. Better in the way described in the video.

I am digging the 1970 George Harrison copywrite dump, 3 cds mostly odds and sods from JWH, New Morning, etc., but I love that Woodstock NY Big Pink period.

never been a big fan of daniel lanois and his "swampy sound" also love "fragments". saw dylan in 2001 and still remains one of the best shows i ever saw. dylan is the only artist who only has re released his music in alternate form and in many cases better versions!
