What’s Up With Buddhist Persecution in Vietnam?

While reports of arrests of, or attacks on, Buddhists in Vietnam are not frequent, the religious community has for decades lived in a perpetual atmosphere of persecution, which cannot be quantified by the number of “incidents” but with official and unofficial restrictions imposed by the Southeast Asian country’s communist government.
“The communist party is really afraid of every movement that has the support of the population,” said Vo Tran Nhat, Executive Secretary of Vietnam Committee on Human Rights, a non-governmental organization founded in Paris in 1975. Vietnam’s government doesn’t only believe that communism is incompatible with Buddhist teachings, but it also sees any assembly or association outside of its control as a threat to its one-party rule.
Speaking to The Diplomat, via StoriesAsia, at the Taiwan International Religious Freedom Forum in Hsinchu City in June, Tran Nhat explained that although he himself is not religious, he cares a great deal about the Buddhists and minority Christians, who raise their voices against oppression and injustice. If Buddhists lose their religion, Vietnam would lose its “soul,” he warned.

This guy have no idea what he’s talking about. I’m Vietnamese by birth and grew up in North America and stayed for several years in Vietnam. Vietnamese Buddhism is thriving after the US trade embargo was lifted. As long as the monks are not trying to get political (which some are) they are left alone to practice, attend Buddhist University, even go abroad to study, get PhDs and many returns to teach at the University. Books, audio lectures are widely distributed. Monasteries hold meditation retreats often for thousands of people, run orphanages, herbal medicine clinics for the poor and organizes charitable drives. In China you don’t get access to Facebook, KZfaq, WhatsApp, Twitter etc.. internet is not censored in Vietnam, all of them are available. What this guy talked about are old news, what happened in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Since the 90’s after the US trade embargo was lifted, Vietnam government became very friendly with many western democracies so they cleaned up their acts in favour of more open society for business and trades. It isn’t yet a democracy but it’s very different from the likes of China.

Yes your right but there’s still some old school people from Vietnam here in the U.S.A that look down at Buddhism but I have also known Vietnamese who believe in Buddhism and it’s from them that I have had a respect for that religion.

In fact, non-believers in Vietnam will also go to pagodas, churches, and temples, not purely for faith, but for culture, study, and community activities. Actually, you can see the presence of academies, religious schools, monasteries of different religions all over Vietnam. Religion is the private relationship of believers with their gods, the state will not interfere unless followers of a certain religion use the name of religion to hurt the interests of others and the nation.

I am a foreigner (German) Buddhist monk living in Vietnam and also actually studying there. Please inform yourself don’t just listen what is told here in this video because it’s false right from the beginning. There is no persecution of Buddhism, Buddhists or any other religion and everybody is free to practice and learn Buddhism or other religions. And saying the state / the party is against religion isn’t right, especially arguing that they are communists so they are against religion is not the truth. Feel free to ask more here by commenting I’m glad to share my own view and experiences with you.

OK the man was born in France, lived in France and talked about the reality in Vietnam? Well, I can't take what he said is all truth. Perhaps he didn't know that in a lot of pagodas, Buddhist monks have opened classes for meditation and Buddhism learning for public, especially for children during summer holidays. Those kind of activities are well received and supported by the citizens as well as the government. Vietnam is a socialist country but Buddhism philosophy has been integrated to our culture for a very long time, saying that the government tried to deny that is absurd! My grandparents donated and helped build pagoda in their hometown, asking a monk to come and stay there to spread out the good value of Buddhism. If there's no freedom of religion (in this case Buddhism), my grandparents would have been in a lot of trouble but they did not, in fact the local governors thanked them for that. In terms of bad Buddhist monks, there're bad apples everywhere and in everything. Some see an opportunity to scam and make money so they took it. There might be police's infiltration, who knows? I don't, but most of the cases are bad people tried to cheat others under the name of religious. Blaming the problems to the government and the police is too shallow in my opinion.
