The official artwork, posted on Instagram by Ty Dolla Sign on December 12th, has certainly gotten people talking.
From its lackluster and basic graphic design - which draws inspiration from some questionable sources ranging from Burzum to totalitarianism - to the potential effects on the overall metal scene, caused by this mass-adoption of metal art aesthetics by the mainstream music and fashion industries. ⚔️

Mainstream is just starting to slowly cannibalize the extreme metal aesthetic. They look for 'new' old, add a bit, rehash it, sell for premium to people who need to feel special/different.. it's a pattern and metal aesthetic is the next scapegoat. I've been listening to rap and metal simultaeonously most of my life and I think its a net possitive but sure feels fkin weird and bizare seeing this crossover.

Funnily enough, there's actually already a Kanye-Burzum crossover in the form of Kanye rapping over one of Varg's ambient tracks in the song 'P*s*y Print' with Gucci Mane.

I think that over time the aesthetic is going to be stolen from us. Mainstream is going to take and adapt it, people are going to associate it with somehing else than black metal. That's a danger for our niche. This aesthetic is great and it's ours, we should defend it.

Another interesting fact. They were playing the 25 minute instrumental song from filosefem as the intro for their 2nd listening party. Was a fun video to stumble upon. In all honesty as someone who toured in the hardcore world for a few years successfully. I think it’s better to see the aesthetic adopted by other genres, in all honesty heavy music is very cringe these days.

@@SpearheadMedia if anything if it gets kids who have no experience with heavy music to make it one day we may see a renaissance the way we did in the mid 2000s when a million going to see pop punk shows were exposed to metalcore / early deathcore. The population of said music is pretty much keeping heavy music alive today.

@@SpearheadMedia I'd seen that image of the four trolls huddled around a small girl, but didn't know his name. Checking out his works now, I am instantly smitten! What a gorgeous style! I'm definitely taking a trip to the museum. No doubt it will be greatly inspiring. Seeing artworks on display irl gives a completely different experience and impact compared to just seeing an image of them through a screen. First time I visited an art gallery was at the Munch Museum in Oslo, and it was amazing how the paintings just come alive when you actually see them on a canvas. It's like there's this depth in them that gets completely lost in scans and photos. And yet, Bauer's pieces are already inspiring me. Can't wait to see his works in person. My favorite Kittelsen piece would be either Nøkken (The Nix) or Kvitebjørn Kong Valemon (White Bear King Valemon). Not exactly his most obscure works, but sometimes, the works are highlighted for a reason. They just exhude that spooky yet magical atmosphere that I love so much in folk tales.

As someone who has spent basically my entire life in the punk and hardcore scenes, I could not possibly agree more with every single word of this video. This level of exposure to the punk/hardcore/metal aesthetic is certainly a double edged sword, but I lean toward the positive aspects just like you. Please keep putting out all the videos you make, including these little rants. Your design tutorials have taught me so much and I love the vibe of your whole channel.

The question I have with the use of heavy metal aesthetics when the music itself is not comparable to that, is, doesn’t that take away from the value of the art if the styles are dissimilar? I always loved the heavy-metal aesthetic, but I don’t make heavy metal music so I felt weird about having album arts and merch and things like that that were so unlike the music that I put out.

Burzum was founded in 1991. It was already well underway when Varg killed Euronymous, Burzum was signed to Euronymous's label. That's why they had a feud. He didn't form Burzum in prison, nor did he form Burzum in 1988.

For the vetements shirt you mentioned, I agree that it doesnt look very good, but vetements is an ironic brand which often takes inspiration from how "normal people" who dont care about their outfits dress, theres a non-zero chance the Primark band merch aesthetic it has was at least partially intentional

Ye's recent Burzum homage didn't actually surprise me much-he's been spotted wearing Testament shirts, which seems like a slightly deeper pull than someone just picking that kind of clothing purely for the visual, and he's sampled various heavier artists in the past (although I was unaware that he'd sampled Varg outright before)-but it was this very specific, weird mix of darkly funny and depressing, because he knows *exactly* who he's signalling to and does not give a fuck about the ramifications, and for an artist of his stature, that's disquieting. Had he done this back around the time he made Yeezus or something you could write this off as an edgelord thing, a provocative joke, but it's clearly not a joke at this point save between him and the Nick Fuentes-adjacent part of his audience. The fact that it's kind of half-assed only underlines this fact to me. It's a /pol/ meme. And that's pretty gross!

The reason Kanye wore that Burzum shirt and was heavyily inspired by it for his merch was because of a rapper Playboi Carti's friend named Burberry Erry who helped style for Kanye and he is a big fan of Burzum he is a fashion dude who has a lot of punk and black metal influences you can tell by his look he has big liberty spikes.

this is WILD i never expected to hear Kanye West and fuckin Burzum in the same sentence i agree the artwork's ass btw, dude got ripped off asf and he deserves it. could've at least made it b&w and cranked the noise and sharpness i'm very aversive to people and especially big brands using our subculture just for surface level aesthetic and profit, but Rihanna's team totally nailed it by actually being respectful, invested and researching and hiring a renowned artist for the job in the end it's awesome that the scene gets exposure from these situations, kids gotta find good music somehow haha great video and editing, wouldn't mind more of these along with the tutorials :)

Absolutely mate, overall it's definitely a good thing for the scene as a whole - here's hoping we see more adoption of the aesthetic by the mainstream going the Rihanna route. There's so many sick masterful metal artists I'd love to see work with big pop/hip hop stars. Great video dude, super informative. I'm all for more exposure to the mainstream, but damn get the oldheads involved if you're going to adopt and incorporate an established underground scene. That Saint West 'tattoo design' says it all about the artist's appreciation and knowledge of the scene..

The album is called Vultures because they're "Culture Vultures". The artwork is a lazy attempt on purpose. Just like how black metal was a lazy attempt to protest good metal.

I actually love that old school style BM artwork lol, but I couldn't give two shites about that Kanye guy or anyone else mainstream like that, there may be some metalheads in their ranks, but I personally feel like the trendiness fad on the designer clothing side (like you exampled) and those types of music artists (I say that term loosely) don't fully appreciate the metal art scene and the deeper value and multi-faceted elements of it, so they should stay in their lane so to speak. You handled things well in this vid bru, nice job!

Profanity and laziness hits hard on morale of people like you who dig their ground with their own horns just to refine their art, but hey it is a path of a true samurai! I love your channel and very happy you post your work and tutorials so we could grow and become who we want. Finding teachers who love their craft (like you) and be able to learn from them is just priceless. Unfortunately in post modern era value is not about skill and art, but more about cringe, low key emotions and other basic animal reflexes which sometimes may create something unique just because it is breaking all the rules, but overall just produces more garbage. Wouldn’t mind more of this sort of videos - like 10-15 minutes bits of commentary style 👌 - Anyways, Ye should take his meds again, completely unhinged mess of a man. I’m not „offended“ by the artwork itself or what it implies (who is this cypher even for?), rather by its laziness and tryhard edge. Makes me hate super-rich even more when they have all the means of getting professional help but instead harass the public with their broadcasted obnoxious mental derailing.

Varg is the best!He came to prominence because he created music that became an inspiration for new black metal genres for years to come!And not because he played bass in Mayhem nor because he killed Euronymous!In his music he never promoted Nazism but his Viking/Norwegean heritage and how it was all destroyed after the Christianisation of the North! This days everyone is Antisemitic and they are promoting the destruction of Israel but for some reason it is accepted and celebrated by the mainstream media!!But still if you say Burzum on any platform of Meta you get banned!Something is critically wrong with our current society

Bah. Don’t make fashion of our passion. They can’t stick to their shit and leave alone the small livelihood to the metalartists. They should not abuse the culture and language of the metal scene… no one makes enough from merch or let alone shows. Most of us play for free or even pay to play. And these artists makes way too much. I appreciate designers getting more money but honestly. Fashion companies can fuck off. Buy the shirts etc from the actual bands instead.

Any publicity is good publicity to some. Once again, an artist that the news and social media has tried to ban into oblivion is being featured internationally and getting more publicity than anyone could wish for. This is also at no cost to the artist. Those who try to ban ideas, thoughts, and people always end up with the opposite result.

Also that logo with the double headed eagle is just the nationality marking/shoulder patch of the german federal police, the only differences are in the font and eagle head count. Agree with everything you said. Incredibly lazy design by Gosha. I actually happen to like some Burzum stuff, despite Varg being a bit looney, but this attempt with Ye is definitely just for controversy. Even still, it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so damn lazy. They couldn't even properly adjust the kerning of the type. Lol. Good vid, man!

This cover would fit some Burzum album, not his album. When you look on Filosofem album cover, you expect something atmospheric and mysterious. But his music is diametrically different from atmospheric and mysterious style

I don't read into a whole lot of who's getting flack for their lyrical themes, like Slam bands and their misogyny advocating r@p€ and slaughtering women, but it does look like ns bands are still all the rage to hate. Weird standards in the Metal world. But sure, Kanye fits right in with this nonsense.

i hate kanye don’t get me wrong, but low effort =/= bad. if the aesthetic you want doesn’t require a lot of effort, why does it matter? just makes you sound salty as an artist ngl. if you put more effort in to get less in the end, that’s your problem

Art is in essence subjective and I respect your opinion if you think the vultures record artwork is good - for me though, a lazy (and worse looking) rip off of burzum record art by a pair of dodgy bois doesn't count as good album art haha. Cheers for checkin the vid and yer feedback mate! ⚔️
