What's Wrong With the 14-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro?

Have we been wrong about the 14-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro and is it confusing when it comes to making that buying decision? Do I regret buying the M1 Max MacBook Pro, especially the 32-Core GPU when it comes to performance and battery life? Now I have reviewed this 14-inch MacBook Pro and talked about real world use as well as the benchmark testing I have performed.
Let's see if we can break this down in some kind of "rational" conversation here because I know there's a lot of discussion that the M1 Pro might be the better value in the 14-inch, and that the thermal headroom on the 16-inch with the M1 Max is the better option.

Awesome Video!!!! Could some one help for my question. I am planning to buy one basically for general use and programming (programming not related graphics). So 10 cpu core but only 14 gpu cores. I would preferred a screen of 15.2 inch in same or just a tiny little increase in the physical size. But nothing like that so 14.2 size. I want to future proof the device with respect to performance so should I go for 16 gb ram with 512 gb ssd OR 32 gb ram to 1TB ssd ???

My vote would be 32GBs of RAM and 1TB if you can swing it. I feel that you’ll want those specs later, which may have you second guessing your initial purchase. Just my nickel’s worth.

Alright friend. Well how about this. I’ll pin this to the top so everyone sees this first. I’ll just add that the RAM is what I’ve always recommended first. You can always add external SSDs. And I can only speak from the perspective of conversations I’ve had with others that are developing or programming that they’ve appreciated the extra RAM, especially if they’re running VMs or emulators. But like I said. This will pinned, and hopefully we’ll bring some other perspectives.

@@KevinRossRN thanks Kevin! Much appreciated. I would go for ram too but the apple does use a lot of swap memory with ssd. And that is where 1tb ssd may becomes useful. If we could see how much swap is used and the speed of swap to ram that would give a better inside.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the swap is fantastic on these machines. I’ve pushed the M1 line to pretty much be in constant swap and I’ve never seemed to notice any slow down. That of course is with video editing, Photoshop and Lightroom open as well as quite a few browser tabs. It’s pretty brilliant how smooth that functionality is. Nothing like back in the day on a spinning HDD or what we’ve seen on the x86 architecture. Simpler commands happening more frequently on this architecture. Anyway, I know it’s tough, but either way I think you’ll love this machine.

You always are inspiring, Kevin. Such a blessing. I'm a musician and I'd like to go more and more "on the move" : recording people anywhere, recording sounds anywhere, composing anywhere, etc etc (you got my point). I think the compact size of the 14" is excellent in this way, and I think the base model would be more than sufficient for my tasks (Ableton Live exclusively, without external plug-ins). I'm also a photographer and the 14" screen doesn't seem to be a worry for quick editing and rendering photos. So I think I may found my new purchase... What do you think ? Great video, a lot of my decisions are based on form factor. I just can't deal with big laptops regardless of the brand and regardless of the power increase the bigger model may have. That is why I would always go for the 14 inch version. I currently own the 13inch pro (2020). However again this is just a personal preference which I guess is why both exists and I love the fact they didn't exclusive give the 16 in the max chip. That exclusivity almost feels like I am being shit on for my personal choices.

Good points made here. 99% of mac users who don't actually earn a paycheck off music, photo, or video don't NEED beyond a $1200 MBA (16gb). It depends on your use case. (1) For music, the use case is basically OVER as one video tested logic pro on a MBA with 30 instances of the cpu hungry Diva synth which NO ONE in their right minds with anything musically interesting to say would ever need or do. (2) the final frontier is for gamers, developers, symphonic composers, or editors of the next Avengers movie....

Do you know something about the next Avengers movie that I don’t? 👀 Thanks friend. @@KevinRossRN ...."old" tech - I love it 😆 Actually, I think it's part of Apple's strategy! They come out with amazing tech like M1 MacBook Pro, and even though Air or MacBook M1 are ALL like 98% of the users need, people feel they need to get the "new" tech. But some will still be on the fence .......So - tada! - M2 Air comes out ...."just in time" to "solve" their predicament! 😉 ......then MacBook M2 .........oh, but WAIT! -- We "now" have the amazing, bestest-ever thingy: M2 MacBook Pro - with *new Max-Infinity! Personally after having the 17" Dell XPS and 16" MacBook Pro M1, I could never go back to my tiny 13" PC laptop, or even a 14" MacBook Pro ...These screens are gorgeous! Plus I do ALL of my work, AND consume ALL of my content, via my laptop (no cable TV, TV screens, monitors/ external screens, nada), so I want the biggest, brightest, best screen I can get! The MacBook Pro 16 is the ultimate. Best battery life, most bang for your buck (The 14" not being much cheaper) It's just incredible that Apple managed to get the best performing laptop, with the best battery life in a laptop, with the best screen, best speakers, no fan noise, no heat, all in one laptop! I take it everywhere with me. I used to carry around a 15" PC laptop that was TWICE as thick, TWICE as heavy, and dimensionally bigger than the 16" MacBook Pro! ...People forget this is a new era where Dell & Apple are fitting 16"/17" laptops into 15"/16" form factors. This is small, light-weight, and fits in my 15" laptop bag - amazing!

Yeah I remember a time when we’d just get a laptop or desktop and it would just “work” for years without any need or desire to upgrade, although I will say that manufacturing and reliability took a nose dive as well. Can’t count how many Dell laptops I’ve got lying around that only lasted about a year. Anyway, I agree that the footprint of these machines are getting smaller while still providing the same if not more screen real estate, which has been nice. I may end up investing in a 16 inch on the next launch, but it would of course be for the channel here and likely not because I need it. Appreciate your time here and glad you shared your experience.

First off thank you for your service. And second, thank you for your time here. I think what’s been interesting to watch, and will also be watching closely is that although these machines seem expensive, that when compared to an equivalent machine (as close as you can get them that is), the price actually starts to become more in line with the market. It’s just that Apple has a lot fewer SKUs than other brands, and so when you see pricing that starts at under 1,000USD then the assumption is that It’s a third of the cost, but obviously when it’s spec for spec, those upgrades start pushing into the MBP space when it comes to price. However it’ll be interesting to see these next Intel and AMD machines, and where they land in price, which we should know more in March and April.

Yeah it’s tough to ignore as far as price difference. As far as Premiere and AE, that’s also tough. I just refuse to touch it on these Macs. For testing, certainly. I definitely found myself in a pickle with just recently picking up the M1 Max 64Ram 2tb 14inch brand new for a mere 2899 + apple care for a total of 3099. Not a bad grab for a normal price point of around 4100. I thought a found an incredible steal of a deal, which I did, however the battery life is something I didn't take into account.. which is why I assume it was on such a sale. Probably a lot of people not buying it for that reason. Part of me wants to return it and get the 16inch M1 Pro with 32ram and 2tb but I would actually be downgrading "performance" and spending around 300 extra dollars for the added battery life. I'm about to be moving into my van, #vanlife haha so It's definitely something that would be useful to have, however, the extra ram and processors might be useful 2-3 years down the line. Welcome back Kevin. My needs are simple - some Lightroom, Resolve, FCP, 360 cam video, and LumaFusion - do you think the M1 Pro Mac Book Pro or even the M1 MB Air would be sufficient for relatively simple editing? The M1 Max and 16” models are above my budget for a laptop.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks! Great to be back. As far as simple editing, the MBA is great. And I’ve even performed more complex editing on that machine. Certain codecs like the DJI Mavic and GoPro footage is definitely harder in some regards because of how much has to be packed in, and then unpacked. I don’t have a 360 cam and can’t speak to it specifically, but I will say that Lightroom is great on the MBA and Resolve is just fantastic now. The one thing I will say is that with the MBP, I haven’t used or needed a hub, at all. I’m testing one right now, but in my workflow I’ve been able to connect an external display, multiple SSDs, and I’ve got the SD card. That being said, a decent hub can be minimum $99USD, and this is for a non-Thunderbolt variety. So, that would be a cost that could potentially be absorbed into the M1 Pro. Does the M1 Pro really break the bank, and how soon are you looking to purchase?
@Hogdriver88

@@KevinRossRN The M1 Pro does not break the bank at all, and I am leaning that way mainly for the I/O and and a little future-proofing. I can't justify the expense of the 16 and M1 Max, and the 16 is bigger than I want. I should have mentioned that I edit GoPro video as well and may delve into drone footage at some point - I'm glad you brought up those points. You bet, and I think the M1 Pro will serve your needs. The M1 Max has two video encoders, which is one of the reasons it’s more responsive, but again, I handled a lot on the M1 MBA and mini. I haven’t heard of any specific issues with external drives, and I definitely use quite a few and they’re often plugged in for days at a time. I know that there has been a report of a “weaker” 802.11 ac in these machines than previous, but I haven’t been able to notice in real world use. I have seen a random RF test on these machines and I can’t recall where that was, but I do have several accessories I’m testing now and see what I find during those tests. I don’t have the answer at the moment, but let me see if I can find one.

It’s a difficult choice. I had to upgrade from my 2013 MacBook Pro and I went for the M1 air to see if the M1 would fulfill my needs. I really like this little machine. If i would have to upgrade I would have to sell it and get the 14” or keep it and get the 16” later this year. Not sure yet so I bought me some time. In the mean time I bought 2 x 5,1 Mac pro’s with 3x Cinema Display for 700€ and am upgrading one of them to the max, just for fun.

Oh now that does sound fun. Feeling nostalgic hearing about the days when we could upgrade these things💀

I saw both 14 and 16 in the apple store and 14 is just love especially in silver 😍

Seems like that silver is making a comeback. And welcome to what seems to be the minority as far as 14 and 16 in the store. I’ve heard from so many that as soon as they saw the 16, that’s what they chose…at least from those I’ve heard from. Appreciate you hanging out with us on this one.

@@KevinRossRN Honestly i bought first 14 and then saw reviews about 16 and then got the 16 . Today went back and exchanged it with 14 . I just love this form factor so so much . I normally while working always dock my macbook so 14 is just ok for that and portability is just amazing . I think this is the best macbook ever.

That’s awesome! Now I have heard a couple of stories about returning the 16 for the 14, and yes, mine is docked right now at the moment and I’ve got the external display handling the timeline just fine. Great to hear. These are fantastic devices. I hope it serves you well.

Tbh its not worth buying due to the over heating causing throttling, 16" is the only worthwhile choice if you can afford it
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really think the throttling was a major deciding factor for some. Although screen real estate is also a big one…probably the “biggest” 😁

Yeah, I have a feeling they’ll want to at least launch the M2 to get this line of chips started with the next pro level ones coming later this year, but yeah, guess we’ll find out once the spring event is here.

Yeah, I think as a desktop replacement around home or a studio, it’s great, but to your point, especially if you’re on the move it might be more prohibitive. Sometimes another couple kgs or one 1 LB might make a difference. Appreciate your time here.
