I'm a native speaker who prides myself on my use of the English language. I scored a 9/10 on the C2 section of the test, I failed the last question. I felt that C. "I can afford it." was a better answer to the question "How can you get by on that salary?" That response would indicate, at least to me, someone who is working a job that pays poorly but has some other means of financial security so they don't need to search for a better-paying job. "I need to job hunt" implicitly indicates that the individual in question CANNOT "get by on that salary".

Same here. I'm a native (American) English speaker so I was wondering if the difference was British vs. American, but it seems like the question implies that the asker isn't sure if the other person could afford to live on their salary or not. If they can afford it with their salary, then C is correct. If not, then B would be correct.
@apetass123
@apetass123 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think they messed that one up. If the reply were, "I can't; I need to job hunt", it would've made sense. But on the positive side, if I can join native speakers in criticising the C2 part, I guess I passed lol.

I'm not native speaker, but I understand this question this way: HOW can you get by on THAT salary? a) I can get it (it's hard but I manage), b) I need to job hunt (I can't, but I don't worry you about my problems), c) I can affod it ( yeeaah, I have low expectations so I'm ok)

Yes, it is. But the worst is the pronunciation. By a landslide. Especially for us french. I am always puzzled by native english speakers who say that the french language is so difficult in comparison to english. That's just wrong. My guess is that since language learning is not mandatory in most english speaking countries, english speakers never learn to learn, and hence, naturally suck at it.
@jakke1975
@jakke1975 Ай бұрын
If you think English is difficult ... try Dutch. To me it comes naturally but I've heard people cuss on it more than once ;) But yeah, the internet is full of examples of all the things that don't make any sense but to people who speak English already. Practically speaking, it's not that bad though. Exposure to a language is the most important thing for people to learn and that is where English excels. Turn on the internet, TV, radio, ... English is everywhere and it's easy to practice it as well. It's a language with comfortable sounds that sit well with most people so I wouldn't really call it "complicated".

It's MUCH worse today, clearly, just looking at the comments sections in 90% of internet web pages. When I was a freshman in a small university in 1977, it had gotten bad enough that for the first time, there was a mandatory writing screening test -- to force deficient writers into a remedial English / writing class, for those who would clearly struggle badly in ordinary freshman English, which was mandatory. I can only imagine how MASSIVELY the proportion of college students badly needing such remedial training having ballooned massively in the intervening 46 plus years. I often wonder if American K-12 education even includes writing, much less grading actual papers AT ALL, given the lack of awareness of English vocabulary, grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and on and on.

Hi Greg, thanks a lot for this video !!! My scores at different levels : A1 - 8/10 ; A2 - 8/10 ; B1 - 8/10 ; B2 - 6/10 ; C1 - 6/10 ; C2 - 5/10. I think that it’s easy to choose between différents answers than to produce them by ourselves, and it cannot show our real level of English. Personally, I always prefer to have this opportunity. It helps me to get a higher score than mine because of choice in answers. For me, it’s like cheating, hahaha. If there aren’t choices, I can do much more mistakes in giving a good answer…

@lapisminer2904
@lapisminer2904 9 ай бұрын
A greeting would go in the front of a sentence for an introduction instead of putting it at the end; the way you worded your sentence was like saying hello and thanks, which would be interpreted as hi and bye together. Common wording would start with saying hi (name) or hello because the word "greetings" is outdated, and for saying goodbye, it would just be "thanks" or "thank you".

10th in C2 is just completely wrong. The entire sentence lacks any context whatsoever, and "I can afford it" literally can fit, like; "How do you get by on that salary?" - "Well, I can afford doing that", as in, I can get by just fine on that salary. It makes sense gramatically, no? I got 8/10 bc of it; got real stupid on 4th question bcuz im a dyslexic moron, but 10th is just wrong and the correct answer makes NO sense to me and not how any english person would speak. I passed all levels, and only missed one in C2. But the one I missed in C2 is the one that many people are clamoring about. In that last question, "How can you get by on that salary?", the implication is that they can and it's puzzling to the person asking. Therefore, the answer logically seems to be, [Not to worry]; "I can afford it."
@nox8730
@nox8730 Ай бұрын
To me, this implies that it is puzzling he even manages to get by with it. Hence the answer "[Yeah], i need to job hunt". Furthermore, i am not a native speaker (french), but i would never use "to afford" in this context. Sounds mighty awkward. I would rather use "i can manage". You can "afford a car", to "let things alone for a few hours"... but you can't "afford to get by". You "manage to get by".

Actually, I have been for quite a while and I'm currently trying to push past that plateau by dedicating a few minutes a day to "studying". Would you mind doing another video where you focus on the C1/C2 levels and present us with some more challenging questions? @@nox8730 You ask *_Is it really OK to feel happy that you managed a 9/10 in your native native language?_* Well, yes, nowadays especially. @nox8730 Ай бұрын
@@Hernal03Well, i can understand your reasons, when said like this. It is true that things are not getting better, including here, in Europe. But i thought that maybe trying these with a foreign language would be more meaningful. Do you speak only english? It's probably more fun to test for a foreign language. It is sorts of like reaping the fruits of years of efforts. Without efforts, no prize, and i never even considered testing in my mother tongue. So, i couldn't really understand your reaction. It is not stated that it is for non-english speakers, and even if it were stated, that would be pointless, because people take the tests they want. No, i was more thinking from a logical standpoint. Obviously you would get a good score. As a native, there is not much to test, right? Or at the very least, there shouldn't be. But indeed, i tend to forget that there are indeed people who suck at their mother tongue. It hurts just thinking about it. I worked hard for a long time because i wanted to respect the languages i learned. And the fact that some natives do not respect their own languages stings. It is simply that those tests seem to - or should - have a point only for those learning the language.

I am a little confused by c2 q10. considering Can=Present, Could=Past, The wording of the question/answer confuses me a little. If we are considering Can as being a present tense of the word, How is it that the 3rd answer is not also correct? How can you afford it (assumption being How can you currently/presently afford it) , Would not the answer, I CAN afford it (assumption being Currently/presently afford it as an affirmation that the salary is not a problem.) not also work here? I guess I am confused here due to the lack of context/perception of the q/a. I probably wouldn't have asked the question in the way it was here. I would have said something like, Are you able to afford the salary? Then the need to job hunt would be a better fit because the question provides a clearer intent in my mind. Maybe I am Just weird. But its the only question i missed sadly :(

I answered all the questions and got 100 percent in the A and B sections. I had 2 errors in the C sections, however I considered question 5 in the C1 section to be ambiguous, depending on whether John or Paul were 16. I also chose "I can afford it" as an affirmative answer to the last question in C2. I found the quiz easy.

I didn't expect to become this absorbed ... Far from a native English speaker. In B1 question 2 the correct answer is said to be B but I think it should be C🙃 I can't find anything wrong with "I can't get used to wake up early"(B) but I don't like sentence C "I am used to working under pressure". Should be work instead of working - I think. Rings better. Proud of my C2 level.

I have a doubt about Exercise number 1, C2 Level: Are we sure that "All at once" can't replace "Suddenly" in this case? Several online sources say it can. Or am I missing something here? Thanks to whoever can clarify this for me and thank you Greg for always uploading useful content!

All at once means everything or everyone the same time not necessarily unexpectedly

All at once sounds weird in this context. To use it, you really need several subjects or objects… I mean, there’s only one cat there. If there had been several cats, then we could’ve used it. But even with many cats, I totally agree with the first person commented, these cats might’ve appeared all at the same time, but the emphasis would’ve been on their simultaneous appearance, but not on the unexpected one.

@@amax7321 You are right about the meaning "all at the same time" but: •you can easily google "all at once meaning" and you will find that the first result is "suddenly" (ex. all at once, the noise stopped) •from collinsdictionary: If something happens all at once, it happens suddenly, often when you are not expecting it to happen. Exs: I feel terribly sleepy all at once. All at once there was someone knocking on the door. Synonyms: suddenly, unexpectedly, abruptly, all of a sudden •from wordreference: all at once, first meaning: suddenly, ex. All at once, I heard a noise in the kitchen Starting from these definitions, I asked my questions

@@barboneretico You're right! I didn't know that "all at once" could mean "suddenly" until I saw your post. After going through some of the sentence examples on the websites you mentioned, I am under the impression that it means "suddenly" when it's positioned before the verb and it means "at the same time" when it's positioned after the verb. It's only speculation though, as I couldn't find any official rule confirming that.
