How about something better then a video for fish diseases. How about a Wiki website where everyone can edit and upload their pictures under a type of Diease then add their experience on how they cured their fish or not. I was thinking of starting a website like that. I am a web designer so it would be easy for me to create. The only thing is it will be time consuming to manage it. I would have to have a bunch of fish expert admins to help.

@@graphicsforever2 hey, if you're still interested in doing that, I would love to assist. I tell my husband all the time that I wish I could help the internet! I frequently send corrections to anyone that needs them, from customer service to educational websites, and I've even rewritten product manuals because the 'Engrish' was incoherent. My father was the same way. When he retired he did a correspondence class (pre-internet days) and would send in corrections with his schoolwork. They ended up hiring him as an editor!

Good one. Yes, the sodium in salt competitively inhibits nitrite uptake by the gills, hence reduces toxicity of nitrite - in fact, it's very rare for marine fish living in saltwater to get nitrite toxicity!

Also if one fish had bloat and died and another has it (both from the same tank and all are the same species), would it be wise to treat all of the fish in the tank? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated so as I don’t lose anymore.

If it reassures you, we've been using the two basic sea salt baths as described here for probably close to two years now, and it's made a helpful difference far more often than not. It's simple, affordable, safe and effective for so many different aquarium organisms; we've successfully treated freshwater crayfish, freshwater shrimp, gudgeons and guppies multiple times. On the very few occasions that the animal didn't recover, we generally weren't really expecting them to make it through anyway, but it was still good to be able to at least ease their passings. We always check the salt-tolerance of the animal before we use a salt bath, and are very careful about accurately measuring the salt, water, and times. We also check water parameters and look over the tank and the animal itself to try and work out what's causing any problems that may be needing treatment. Hope this is helpful for you :)

My understanding is that 'rock' salt (salt mined from dry land rock) is more likely to contain undesirable mineral traces than 'sea' salt (salt harvested from the sea by letting water evaporate so the salt is left behind dry). These are both kinds of salt you can find in everyday grocery stores, along with 'table' salt (which usually contains a small amount of an additional substance to help keep each grain separate & prevent the salt from clumping together into a solid block). These 3 salts are all mostly made up of the same basic substance (Sodium chloride) and they're all the sort of salt that we humans eat. Are you familiar with pink Himalayan rock salt, or maybe salt lamps? That's a kind of rock salt that contains tiny amounts of trace minerals which cause its distinctive pink colouration. It's a naturally occurring pigmentation of the salt which exists as literal rocks in the ground, and is an interesting example of a visible trace element in a rock salt. I can't recall whether or not this video was the source of my information, but somewhere along the way I read that table salt with an added anti-caking agent, or rock salt with trace minerals from the ground aren't ideal for freshwater aquariums fish. I really hope this helps, I feel like I might not be explaining things well enough.

I'm also interested in this, did you try it with the 30g/L I'm to scared because it seems a bit much? And based of one of the comments above it did not turn out great for their fish.

The small dose may be used as a safe dose for a tonic for healthy fish, but when we are treating fish in ill-health, we need to use the appropriate doses.

1. It's not necessary... but it does help. 2. Calculate 1-tbsp/5-gal. In your case, that'll be 1-1/2tbsp. Since Bettas are somewhat delicate, the more you can do to provide a non-stressful environment the better. Just remember: Gentle currents, a soft place to lay upon for resting (leaves somewhere above the tank floor) and a nice blanket of bubbles on the surface for spawning. Also, avoid heaters rated below 50-watts, and ones rated at 50-watts offered by Tetra aquarium products. Neither can perform reliably, for some reason.

Betas are very sensitive to water temperature. It must be between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius, do the convertion for Farenheit

EquestAnton have to be careful of salt burns if salt is not predissolved prior to adding to the tank or pond. The aim is to achieve a concentration of 5g/L during times of stress.

Thanks very much for your reply and time Doctor Richmond! Can you tell me how much salt approx in Kgs I will need for an 86 723 L pond. I worked it out at 433Kgs of salt which is an awful lot of salt! For general maintenance can I use less. Our water PH is exactly 6 as it comes straight from a clear mountain stream. Do you know how much Calcium carbonate I should add to make it harder and should I use magnesium as well? Or does sea salt take care of both o them? I know they prefer the water slightly harder as this also reduces stress and opportunistic infections and over time organ disease or collapse. They are very healthy at the moment but the vagaries of the weather can shift the balance of phytoplankton and zooplankton in an instant leading to the odd monumental disaster. How does salt affect both the phyto and zooplankton, do they adjust?

Different brands of salt have different size granules so measuring them by volume instead of weight is inaccurate (e.g. Larger granules will have more air between them meaning you can fit less in a teaspoon than smaller granules which will have less air between them) . You can get a cheap digital scale very cheaply from most supermarkets or dollar shops. That said though, the margin of error and difference in results will be quite small, so long as it's not a large aquarium which requires a large amount.

the lost journal of mystifying things sounds like ammonia issue... Get clean lake water from lake full of life, fish! And add to aquarium, this will supply fish with good bacteria so ammonia cant kill the fish

Getting water from the wild (especially when other fish live in there) is an unnecessary risk because especially parasitic desease are common in the wild. If the issue is caused by ammonia, you could just change the water more often and add life plants or use remineralised destilled or ro water if the tap water is polluted.

The 30 g/L epsom salt is used as a bath for up to 5-10 minutes specifically as a laxative. What condition did your angelfish have that might have caused this adverse outcome?

@@thefishdoctor8746 bloated body not going poo only let fish stay in water for 10 minutes. Was dead the next morning. I put the angelfish in 12 liters of water with 360 grams of salt. Then back into its 55-gallon tank. Actually, your video states up to 30 minutes, but i only had in the water for 10 mins tops.
