Tom Bailey had a devastating fire in the braking area at the NHRA Gatornationals. Drag racing isn't easy, with all the crashes, accidents, and fires that can occur - but thankfully Tom got out okay.
This is a two-part series about the fire and what kept Tom safe. Tom will share his experience, knowledge, and what he has learned since the fire.

You are very much right in the phrasing that a fire system is to save you and not the car. Most people don't realize what kind of mess and damage just the fire system alone can do to the car. It's one of those things that is very situational. I've always felt like a fire system was most useful when a car is flipped or you as the driver are actually stuck in the car somehow. The fire system then buys you a lot more time to hopefully get out of the car. Just like you said with the fire gear, it's all about how much time you have until some serious damage happens.

Had a o ring blow out on my mustang in the 90's. Melted a bunch of wires and bubble the paint on the hood. A old timer walked up and pointed out what caused the fire. He said did you re use the o ring. I did, then he said never do that. Always put new ones on. Glad you was safe, sorry about the hot rod.

The good thing in this, the car did exactly what it was supposed to do, when things go sideways, it saved your life. while the damage is extensive, it's not unrecoverable. Glad you'll be back, Hope to see you at Drag week or either race weeks, but understand if it can't happen. Once again, the good in this, Your car did exactly what it was designed to do, protect you. BTW if you can't run Sick seconds (1.0 or 2.0), I'd like to see that Torino behind you at race week.

Fire suppression systems indoor every 2 years. Outdoors use in many cases, manufacturers recommendation and local law may ask for 1 year. On the 5th year, make an exercise and pull it to get a feel of what it does, how long, how hard to pull and are you able to do it tied up in a smoky cabin... Same thing with 1st aid kit, when it is time to replace it open every single old item and play with them.

Great info and interesting about the different system and no residue. As for the pin in the fire system I agree that most systems have a pin or a safety in that is a two step process to deploy. That said with the handle that you had at the time of the fire I could imagine that would be hard to pull the pin and then the handle if you were strapped in the seat. The new system with the handles next to the shifter would be much easier even if it’s still two steps pull the pin then the handle. Out of interest I wonder how many guys run touch drills with those sort of emergency situations so that you can do it by feel if the cabin is full of snake and fire and you can’t see

Tom's 2 vids have been great however I counter the " fire pin in " portion. Yes, the pin is in place in an extinguisher hanging on the wall however the risk of fire is generally low in a typical building. In a race car, the risk of fire is much higher so the system should be ready at all times the car is ready to race. Given Tom has been on fire to varying degrees 6 times in 8 years I'd call that high risk.

I’ve fitted a lifeline zero (uk company) fire suppression system to a track car. It discharges a clear gas with no residual to clean up It’s quite expensive to refill a 10lb bottle at around 500aud but well worth it This system in particular had a closed loop electrical switch to activate it (kinda cool but also easy to accidentally hit it - which I did as during wiring the car it up hence I know how clean it is)

Yeah, my question is if the automatic deployment system he talked about still requires pulling the pin. I’m guessing that it does and that if the pin is left in (like most racers seem to do) the “automatic” system can’t deploy the retardant. I get racers not wanting to pull the pin and risk an accidental deployment. Wondering what other methods could be designed into the system vs the pin.

Is the fuel pressure that high to overcome the cylinder pressure under boost? Higher pressure generally reduces actual flow, a friend pointed that out to an Indy team that was testing and he recommended lowering fuel pressure and running a much larger injector for their car. Fixed the issue it was having that raising fuel pressure had just been making worse.

O rings, people think that if it’s round and still connected it’s good. Having designed aerospace parts for years there are specific tolerances that need to be held in order for the o ring to seal and perform correctly. If the o ring has a nick it’s no good, if the o ring is no longer round in cross section it’s no good if the groove it sits in is not within tolerance it’s no good (look at a Parker catalog and see the required groove size and tolerances) there is a large safety margin but..... take it from an old guy who knows, learn a little bit about material and groove maintenance if you want that 30cent part to work.

@fridaynightgamefilm

Racetracks need to consider Ultra High Pressure fire suppression systems on their fire safety trucks. They use powerful pressure washer motors (~ 25 HP) to create a mist of super fine water droplets. By maximizing the surface area of the water, the powerful blast of water mist instantly cools the source of the flames to the point where combustion can't be maintained. These systems can also blast their mist into an engine compartment through the front radiator grill, or through any crack in the hood or wheel wells. These systems can also add foam, to prevent any burn back (fire restarting). Companies like Pyro Lance make systems that can penetrate a wall (or a car panel) to extinguish a fire behind a barrier.

Fire is scary stuff and especially methanol based fires. There are racers who’s racing programs would probably benefit from using methanol. as I live in a very hot and arid area and using methanol would allow greater consistency when the air temperature sky rockets. Under the hood on a street car 179* seems a little of a low temp to set the fire suppression off especially if still has stock inner fender aprons, turbo and just radiant heat in general. I guess placement would be a priority on the sensor then as to not set it off from having it in the wrong place. Having a fuel cell in the engine area (although it's pretty small) means that an engine fire can cause it to burst. When s#%t hits the fan and you survive, you assess the damages, take notes what lead to what and changes things better. As scary as it seemed, luckily it "only" cost the car, or parts of it. Those you get new ones. Only one of you brother, there's no replacing of that. Now waiting the birth of a new, improved Sick Seconds; Fine Seconds, maybe?

My concern not mentioned in the three videos, what happens if you are slammed into the wall on the driver's side, do you have another exit other than the driver's door. You briefly mention there was another way to open the door but no real detail. And really just bringing it up in case there is not another way out and you just have not thought of it, or others building their cars have not thought of it.
