Not the first or only company I've heard of doing this as way to both preserve an on paper image of having never fired an employee/put the shame of quitting on an employee as well as sidestepping having to pay out benefits/compensation. It is a horrifying practice. I have never understood the salaryman concept. Showing that much loyalty to an entity that shows none to you in return or will do more than replace you if you do not give your life in full and total to being an ant ready to be crushed for their bottom line.

I remember reading in the 90s about a Sega boss doing a commercial sent on TV that showed how bad of a boss he was. In the commercial he was running in the rain, grabbing his hair in pure anguish at how he could have made such extremely bad decisions. They had lots of screenshots of this "commercial". It has to be somewhere. Seems like a rare video of something that only could have taken place in Japan. Would be interesting if anyone could confirm this or find the video. I'll see if I can find the computer magazine that had this article about the video. The name of the Swedish computer magazine was "Interface".

This information sadly makes the Sega Civil War (Sega of America vs Sega of Japan) that was happening behind the scenes at the time make more sense. Sega of Japan was definitely the antagonist during all the multiple incidents during that behind the scenes Sega Civil War and these secret backrooms that they were doing to their own Sega of Japan employees just adds another layer of insanity behind all of it. Also, thank goodness the Fallout series wasn't around for most of the 90's and wasn't that well known at the end of the 90's. If it was, I could see Sega of Japan creating VAULTS and doing Vault-Tec like experiments on their employees that they punish and decide temporarily banish to the vaults. LOL. Sounds insane, but it's not to far fetched to think that they would put a single employee in a vault and surround them with nothing but literal PUPPETS for weeks in an attempt to use psychological warfare on them (like what Vault-Tec did in Vault 77 to one guy in the Fallout series who was locked up all by himself with a bunch of literal puppets. It drove him insane, psychologically turning him into "Puppet Man". Sega of Japan would pull a Vault-Tec on their employees).

the episode I'd like to see is the robin hood episode about the japanese that started stealing the second sony announced and why they kept getting away till it was gone. good stuff amazing organization among them. the real reason is because it was all carried out by rank and file nobodies and the executors didn't care because they knew the fund capital was no longer being supported in advance and were wealthy enough to not care if anyone called them failures. some have speculated a connection but there is no such connection the ones that divided that bag to a thousand sets of hands used the force and magicked insights about as evidenced by Japanese legal system responses to foreign allegations of wrongdoing. but more than that apparent economic division between the administrators themselves. just the fastest guns opening fire from lower management. slowly over several years in peripheral markups arranged by small business providers of things etc etc.

If my boss put me in a room with nothing to do but sit there and be bored, I would weap tears of joy. I would kiss his feet and thank him. Being bored after working a 6 day 13 hour a day work week is a god send. Remember kids when stupid people say they want the minimum wage to be highered those same stupid people just get fired, and competent workers, have more to do with less workers to do it with. Usually end up havign to do 5 seperate peoples jobs for one persons salary.

I came back to this video after someone complaining of the CRT lines and not remembering I thought I would watch again. You kind of jumped from 1979 to 1983 pretty quickly. You did not mention that Sega was an American company primarily when they bought that portion that was nearly added 1979, and that 1983 was the year that Paramount sold Sega to these Japanese interests most likely one of them being from that venture capital company. Also in Sega was an American company they didn't want to do their own system instead they were out licensing their products to Coleco and making Atari 5200 games on their own.

This speaks less about Sega individually and more about Japanese corporate culture. Japanese companies will do almost anything to avoid firing people. The philosophy that when you take on an employee you take them on basically for their whole career for good and bad. Under performing employees are often subjected to mistreatment to "encourage" improvement. Happens across the majorities of companies in Japan.
