@@gammingchat6253 teacher(and doctors in some cases I believe) = Sensei, not senpai And both can go after a surname, like if you had a teacher named Tanaka, "Tanaka-sensei" could be a proper way to refer to them. ♡

When I was younger I was a total weeb and called my friend who was also loved anime but not as much as me. And she was really good in school. She studied on everything, even on the weekends and I thought she knew what “Senpai” meant and she thought I had a crush on her and I simply explained that I was just referring to her as someone whose better at school then me cause that was the only way I could explain.

as long as we're talking about it, "kouhai" is the opposite, for someone whom you are more experienced than, but it's not something you would say as readily unless there's a genuine hierarchical structure in which you are above someone. like, you wouldn't call someone "kouhai" just because they're younger than you, but might if you're their upperclassman or their senior at work

Yup, like you'd say "this is my kouhai" but you don't say "hey, kouhai" or "what's up, kouhai?". Now that I think about it, I wonder why that is? It's the same with "Onii' or "Onee" and "Imouto" or "Otouto". Like you'd call your big sister "Onee-san", but you don't call your little sister "Imouto-san" when you're speaking to her.

I can see how it's been ''translated" into like crush, because it's pretty common for the older kids, like high school seniors (and uni) to have the younger people having crushes on them, they are seen as cool or something. It's also the case for people to be draw to people they think are like the top. So normally the smartest kid, the best sports player, etc. So I can see how it's become so misinterpreted.
