Hello Rob. I film trains and currently use a panasonic fz1000. Unfortunately the fz1000 doesn't focus well on subjects moving towards the camera. It often drifts out of focus. There are a lot of reviews that say the hc-x1500 autofocus is really good on static shots but how good is it for moving subjects. Do you think the focus for train spotting scenarios would be a lot more accurate with the hc-x1500? Many thanks for any advice you could give me.

Yes, and the AF is awesome in all modes. There are specialized tracking, face detect, and other AF settings you can use to dial it in to the situation you need, but my experience has been awesome with this camera. N

Hello Robert, I record with an HC1500 camera and I am thinking of switching to an Ag CX350 due to its brightness and image quality. Will I notice much difference in dark shots?

Hello. You will absolutely notice a difference. However, before jumping into the cx350, please carefully consider the HCX2, andHCX20. You may find their feature set does everything you want and save some money. If you need prores Raw and a 1 inch camcorder, then consider the JVC GY500. There are several different options with series of camcorderz and it's AF is a little dated compared to the newer Panasonics, but you will get internal ProRes to a special SSD caddy. If you're really worried about low light and aren't so interested in 10bit, you could pick up a new old stock Panasonic DVX200. It uses a M43 sensor and will generally have a better low light image because the sensor is larger. Some comfort features will be lost compared to the newer offerings, but I still use my HCX1/UX180 7 years later and I think the image quality out of them is great. They are from the same sensor family as the DVX200. It's just a thought. Good luck.

Thanks Rob, very informative video you are my go to source for all things Panasonic camcorder, my dream is to get a couple of HCX 1500s to work with my Lumix G7 in my Atem mini pro streaming \Live production setup. 10bit in the canon camcorder ecosystem costs an arm leg and kidney (XF series) I could buy two HCX 20s 0r 3 HCX 1500s for the price of one XF-605 😀

Thanks for your comment. Yeah, Canon makes you pay for 10bit. It's too bad, really. I hope they figure it out soon. Imagine if Canon made a prosumer level camcorder at 1" with 4k60 and 10bit. All they would be doing is matching the competition, but I believe it would be a success. Then people like you and I would buy their camcorders without question. Until then, Panasonic and JVC are the only options. Cheers.

@@RobertHamm indeed, I mentioned the XF-605 because I have used it, a good friend of mine owns two so when I work with him on his gigs that's what I work with, he previously owned blackmagic 6ks and an Ursa but he moved to the XF cameras and an R5c because of the kind of work that was coming in for which called for the fast accurate auto focus They're great but as we agree Canon makes you pay through the nose for 10 bit and Panasonic delivers it in much more cost effective packages so yeah, my future looks very Panasonic 😁

Interesting. I was considering the 605 and 405 as compared to the Panasonic CX350. Have you used the Panasonic Or any of the newer Panasonic Camcorders (x1500/cx350) and newer? I'm wondering about your experience with AF compared to the Canon models. I have used them in a very limited capacity on jobs where I wasn't the Videographer but the contractor hired had one. So, I can't say for certain, but I think remember feeling like the Canon AF was better, but couldn't compare sode by side. Also, how about the onboard codecs. The x1500 have no All-i codecs on 4k. I don't see an issue really, but I think it's an omission. 400Mbps All-i would have been nice. I usually record in 150Mbps 4k30 10bit 422. If I need 4K60 I use the 200Mbos HEVC codec at 10bit 420. I'm just wondering on your thoughts here if you have any. Cheers.

I guess, that the 12 SDI, G-Lock/Sync, Timecode, Ethernet and 8-Pin Remote connectors from a Canon XF605 would easily make 1000$ less, if there would be a Canon "XF600" without that connectors (the number 5 is for camcorders with broadcast/streaming connectors). So we are forced to chose the only 10bit camcorder from canon - which is also the only Canon XF camcorder at the moment - which have that connectors. I don´t think, that we will ever see a Canon XF camcorder, which would be without that broadcast/streaming connectors, like on the prosumer XA camcorder line, because thats the Professional XF camcorder line. This might be also the reason, why the Canon prosumer XA camcorders "only can do" 8bit 4:2:0, because they are just prosumer camcorders for Canon. I did sacrifice my money for a Canon XF605, so others don´t have to, lol! Now i am in pain and agony, if i am touching my Canon XF605... 😅

Hello Rob, thank you for your incredible informative videos. I just signed up on you tube specifically so I could ask you a question. I film and make videos for the local high school, sports male and female, performing arts, special events such as homecoming, graduation, parades etc. I have been doing this since 1998 not for profit. The past ten years I have been using Panasonic HCX 900 camcorders. I'm looking to upgrade and have decided on either the HCX 2000 or the HCX 20 My question is will I see a noticable improvement in video and image quality with these 2 camcorders over my HCX 900's. Also how much difference would there be between the two in image quality Low light is not a concern. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Good question. Thanks for your comment. Yes. You will see a big difference from the HCX900 as compared to either of the cameras you mentioned. Everything is improved by several generations of Panasonic innovation and sensor technology. If it's the 900 series I'm thinking of, the. You're talking about 7 years newer technology. So, yes, everything about the cameras will be updated and improved. If you found that smaller form factor good for you, consider Panasonic's other small body camcorders the HCV970 and wF1 (I think). Anyway, these are around 8-900 USD and you may be happy with them and save some money. Between the HCX200 and the HCX2, the X2 is newer, has a generation newer sensor, and the sensor is larger. It will be about 1 to 1.5 stops better in low light and has published specs of about 13.5 stops of Dynamic range. The hcx2000 shouldn't be in your list unless you need the 3GSDI port. If you do, then, great. Spend the 2200 USD and get it. If not, save at least 200 bucks and get the Hcx1500 and buy the top handle separately. The 1500 can be had for 1700 bucks, and the top handle can be bicked up for $300. As you can see, you just saved $200 USD. The only difference between the two models is the 3GSDI port. Everything else is identical. You're welcome. The 1500/2000 compared to the HCX2, smaller sensor, longer zoom, smaller overall (less than half the size of the X20 modular design- you can remove the top handle when you need to get a smaller package, and that's it. It will not be as good as the X20 in low light. It's about 1-1.5 stops worse in low light. This will be immediately noticed when you zoom. To help combat this problem, Panasonic gave it a wife f1.8 aperture at the wide end of the lens and on the twle end it comes to f4 (in comparison to f2.8-4.5 on the X20). Get whichever on you like and let me know. Please use my Amazon links if you buy through Amazon. 2 day shipping and free returns. Sometimes overnight shipping is available, too. Cheers.

@@RobertHamm Wow, thank you for your informative reply. I hadn't considered the WXF 1 but will now take a look at it. I'm a fan of the smaller form factor which is why I liked the HCX 1500 or 2000. Thanks for the tip on saving bucks with the 1500 and separate handle purchase. I'll let you know what I end up with. At 76 years of age I really appreciate info from someone who actually knows what their doing. Again thank you so much, and I hope you have a great day

If the DSLM sensors are getting better and better, this should also change the sensor technology from the camcorders...like the dualpixel autofocus sensors from Canon, as an example. I don´t think, that those sensors from a HCX 1500 or the AG CX350 will be a longtime solution for a lot of camcorder generations from Panasonic, even if they would be able to do 12bit in the future. If all camera brands will not improve their camcorders from time to time, the DSLM´s and cinema DSLM´s - which get an replacement every 3 years - will make camcorders - which sometimes only get an replacement every 5 years - in the long run obsolete (like the compact cameras, which did assimilate the 200-800$ camcorder range)...at least in the consumer/prosumer range. But there will always be a place for the professional camcorder range, which will cost you an arm, a leg and one kiddney...
@RobertHamm
@RobertHamm 11 ай бұрын
I agree. The camcorder market seems to span about two generations of DSLM sensor technology. However, camcorders don't seem to be impacted by aging the same way DSLM cameras are. So, it's a trade off. I think that part of the reason camcorders aren't updated as often has to do with the kind of firmware camcorders get over their lifetime compared to DSLM cameras and the different markets- Videographers and ENG companies are moreikwlu to put a more expensive camcorder with a projected use ofver 5-7 years as compared to photographers who are more likely to invest in lenses and see camera bodies as a more temporary "modular" item. Cheers.
