The Lincoln Town Car was one of the longest lived luxury vehicles in the U.S. It's big, soft, and old-fashioned. The key to its survival was due to the fact it simply out-lived all the competition. But the Town Car still raises an interesting question...What should a luxury car be?

Well if buyers wanted these HUGE cars they would be in demand. But all the younger cars want today are small to midsize which will dictate their buting habits in the future. The full size car today or recent past grew up in the 1960s and 1970s. Yes they complained about the smaller cars of the 1980s.

Most of the people that bought these are either dead or so old they are not driving any more and outside of the livery trade, there really isn't a New car market for these cars any more.. The Lincoln LS was a great car, but it was too expensive to compete with Cadillac and Lexus with their then CTS and IS or ES
@jamesp504
@jamesp504 6 жыл бұрын
califdad4 no, the Lincoln LS was competing against a Cadillac Catera or STS back then. And the STS was far more successful, because it was more powerful and better equipped. A 300 horsepower Northstar shit on that Lincoln LS, nobody wanted one. The STS was a horrible car in my opinion, but it sold very well and was indeed very fast. Cadillac killed the Lincoln LS.

I just test drove one the other day..and just like when I test drove one a few years ago..I was very disappointed in the car. First of all..the air conditioning fan is HORRIBLE. Incredibly weak..and it could barely keep the car cool on an 86 degree day. My old Lincoln from the early 80's could literally freeze you to death on a 100 plus day. Second..the ride was very busy and "jiggly". Every ripple on the road was felt..albeit not in a hard fashion..but still..a car this big and heavy shouldn't be transferring that much motion and vibration into the cabin. Third..The acceleration was very poor and inadequate for a car this big. Fourth..The interior just felt cheap. The wood trim really did look like plastic. The leather felt more like vinyl. And for such a large sedan the interior didn't feel as large as it should. No comparison to the beautiful ride of the Town Cars of the 80's. No thanks..

A full frame, RWD, V8 is the perfect platform for a "Luxury Car". They should have kept tweaking that, instead of dropping it. That was a huge mistake. I snagged a 2006 Designer from Alabama with 52K miles, and I'm glad I did. I keep it garaged, out of Ohio weather, and put maybe 500 miles per year on it. I think I'll grab another to use as a daily driver before they're all beat up. I don't give a damn what anybody else thinks of them. I've got mine, to hell with everybody else!

0rnery the problem that I find with modern day "luxury" is that's it's all in the infotainment. "How much expensive deal can we shove into this cheap frame" There's no soul, no character. I don't feel connected to the car. With older cars, esp my town car and other older panther platform vehicles, I do get a sense of that. The car has enough to keep me comfortable and entertained (mainly music) and the soft suspension and sturdy frame make me feel as though I'm connected to the road but not abused by it.

Don’t forget: 2003 was a major chassis upgrade for the Panther platform: zero-offset wheels (2002-earlier do not fit), new frame, new engine cradle, etc. To your credit, you touched on this but only lightly. There is a big difference in the feel of a 2002 versus 2003 Town Car. The highest-mileage one I saw was 589,000 miles, at which point it needed a transmission. The engine was fine. My Town Car L once fit a full-size bureau and more in the back seat with the doors closed! Later on, I loaded it with 1100 pounds of 18” square x 3” concrete pool pavers in the floor, seats and trunk. Thanks to self-leveling, it got home with no issues. Trivia: the Town Car L will self-level up to 700 pounds in the trunk. That’s two big fat dead Mafia dons.

I am 21 and a software engineer. I bought one of these as my first car while in university. It's rock solid reliability and amazing ability to insulate me from the rest of the world is why I chose it. I frequently drive 600 mile trips on weekends to visit family in other cities and it is perfect. And despite what people think, it handles cities well. I never have a hard time making it though down town Ottawa finding a parking spot, before I go to a pub. Plus it makes being stuck it traffic tolerable. I simply turn on a good radio station or a audio book and wait for traffic to get moving. I've been stuck behind an accident before and had to wait 2 hours for it to be cleared on a northern Canadian highway (no detour around it). I sat in the back with my little brother and watched a movie, on a fucking full sized TV I was transporting! I am personally going to drive this car until it's in the dirt. They literally don't make them like this any more. I don't car if it gets 15mpg in town and 25mpg on the highway.

Lincoln Town Car IS what luxury should be. I am the original owner of a 2001 Cartier, the then top of the Lincoln line. And to this day after all these years of daily driving, I still get compliments. I have recently turned 208 thousand miles and it's not stopping ay time soon. There are more fuel efficient vehicles on the road today. Although I still get 22 to 26 depending on where I drive. But for me its not about fuel cost. The sheer size & weight produces an unsurpassed comfort as it floats down the road. I have rented many cars at airports and can confidently say, there is nothing on the road that feels like a Lincoln. This video nailed it. There are still drivers that don't want to feel the road. I choose to be driven in quite comfort. Lincoln. My car is far from new. But at the end of the day when it goes in the garage and I close the door... its still a Lincoln!

I loved my 2003 Town Car...200K miles when it was retired due to a rear end going out...I dare say that car was one of my favorite cars that I have owned and I have owned over 54 cars as well as 9 motorhomes..(RV's)...I can't say enough positive about that Town Car..I did miss the front window vent windows that my older Town Cars had..the little triangle section that would go down before the main side window would for a small vent..

The front seats are buckets and are very snug. It handles very well and rides nice. The rear deck isn't very long at all, it looks long because other cars have virtually no deck. If you have the trunk organizer you have a big trunk and an underneath storage area. It is very trim and if you know how to drive it is easy to drive in a city. My goodness, I learned how to drive on a bigger car.

Your backs hurts in a Towncar? Sounds like you have a bad back. I recently bought a 2003 with only 92k miles on it. This thing is like sitting in my living room on my couch. I mostly drive my Benz and my Sportwagon TDI. But when I want a night out on the town with my girl and some friends or a long drive vacation my German friends stay home and I take the couch. Super smooth, quiet and comfortable and getting around 23 m.p.g. at highway speeds all the while stretching out on my couch in my living room at 75 m.p.h. Read up on the dependability of these cars. They are VERY reliable and run over 250K miles with ease. Love this car.

I have a 2005 TC, and I think it's sexy looking. And I and my dogs look sexy riding in it. We don't care who thinks we're outdated. If anyone wants to get my Town Car from me, they'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands (along with my firearm)! If it's uncool to drive a Lincoln Town Car, I'm fine with that. It's been years -- decades, actually -- since I cared about what's hip.

Overall this was a great review of the Town Car. This truly was the last of an era and the last of the good Lincoln's. Personally the 90-97 Town Car was always my favorite generation next to the 80-89 Town Car. But still excellent cars no less. You should do a review of the Cadillac Deville or DTS next. That;s what I have myself and are also some great cars.

I own a 2000 TC given to me by my dad. I deliver pizza and groceries for a living and I use the Town Car when my back is hurting or its gonna be a rough day, compliments the 13 Abarth 500 work car and my 06 Dodge Ram 1500 in my driveway. The comfort for professional drivers is unmatched! I see why they're loved after spending time with mine. 200k miles runs like a clock!! I turned the car down multiple times and I finally took it, took car of deferred maintenance myself and now I'm in love! I got the second auto seat button set to fully recline and go back. So nice for breaks!! my favorite feature and that comfy recliner like chair, plus the Factory Alpines still kicking it 21 years later!

A luxury car should be: Big on the inside! These days even "luxury" cars that have plenty of gimmicks are cramped on the inside, with high, wide center consoles (despite having no manual clutch) that preclude sliding across the seat to enter and exit through the curbside door.

Update: Some female dog decided to turn left directly into me as I was crossing an intersection with the green light, with a combined speed of 50+ mph, basically a head on. My '01 LTC saved my life! In the process it was totaled. Adding to the bummer factor is the fact that after reviewing how little I'd spent on it since right after I bought it in September 2015, I took it to my favorite shop for an alignment, brake bleeding, and fixing the parking brake. It was running smooth and sweet. I even was figuring on another transcontinental trip in it this Winter. RIP '96 LTC Signature in harvest gold. The replacement is a '96 LTC Executive with only 102 kmiles. It's got some cosmetic issues, but throws no codes and drives just fine. I'll tinker with it as time, weather, and money permit to fix the squawks, and enjoy driving it daily as I do so.

IMHO a luxury car is a car that is built to provide comfort for the driver. In that regards, only Lexus, Lincoln, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and maybe Volvo and Mercedes are real luxury cars, as the other brands go too much into the sporty territory.

Its a real shame. If you were playing that game where you say a word and the other person is suppose to say the first thing that comes to mind, what do you get when you say 'luxury'? My mind says 'comfort'. Maybe someone else would say 'power'. After that you might get into some other multiple word statements like 'great fit and finish'. So, what kind of list can I make with those words? - Luxury car must be exceptionally quiet and smooth. Town Car excelled at that at least through '97. The wider tires and suspension upgrades required to out corner and out stop Cadillac Sedan Deville likely came at a sonic penalty. In addition, the latest technologies should be applied to maximizing the smoothness of ride and minimizing sound intrusion. Lincoln did this well through 1990, being early to the gas shock party and the steel belted radial party (at least in America). They were also early to the electronic fuel injection party, offering it standard in 1980. - Luxury car must be powerful. 0-60 should be in the top 10-15% of cars. At the same time it still needs to be quiet. I don't want a luxury car that SOUNDS powerful, I want a luxury car that IS powerful. There is a difference. Up until the introduction of the PI engine the Town Car was respectably powerful. No it wasn't as fast as the Caddy, but who cares. At least the torque went to the correct end of the car. - Luxury car must have the ultimate fit and finish. If I see steel in the gaps between the door panels and B pillar covers and it was't meant to be there, as were the window frames on 1980-1989 Town Cars, it isn't luxury. A feature most people don't even think about that I miss dearly from my '93 Town Car is the sill plate. Most cars today still don't have anything near as substantial as that was. It aged pretty well too, looking almost brand new when I cleaned it. What other items would a Town Car driver use without thinking that other drivers don't know they're missing? How about dual sun visors for both front seats? If the sun is at an angle or you aren't driving in a straight line you can effectively block out 30% of the area where the sun might shine into your eyes. Thats a big deal that I sorely miss. Honestly I was surprised to not find that in my wife's 40K SUV. In closing, I just want a darn Lincoln Town Car with truly modern powertrain and suspension. Install the BOSE active suspension, or the active sway bars BMW and Lexus have used. Include DSC and all of those other driver aides, and make available EVERY comfort feature that can be found on a car for less than 100K standard. That's right, standard. No options, no tiered pricing, just either you can afford it or you can't.

AS A FORMER LIMOUSINE driver I spent many hours in these Lincolns and I miss them. The company I worked for had 6 Lincoln stretches and 45 Town Cars and Cadillac DTS. Take a DTS sedan & an L.T.C. of equall age & mileage you'll find the Lincoln is always ready to ride while the Cadillac, arguably a more fun car to drive, has a worthless sized trunk and its Northstar engine will be low on oil and water and most likely in need of a jump start. The Lincoln Executive L is 6" longer than the regular sedan. The extra length gives it better ride... These cars use the same drivetrain and platform as the Crown Vic cop cars making them virtually indestructible and good for 350,000 miles or more. .. What a luxury car should be..

Steering is pretty good also (better than my ranger). Drive is so quiet on any street. I could easily go 80 in a 35 without noticing. Literally no road noise. I have a 2009 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and my great aunt has a 2004 grand marquis, she put it best when she told me “I just want a comfortable car the lasts, I feel like I’m driving my lazy boy, I love it!”

Great video! I have a 2007 TC that is awesome. Most of my driving is open highway now and it is the most comfortable car to cruise along in. It would be perfect if it had vented seats because it's pretty hot in the southwest here but just put a towel on the seat and it's fine!

Ventilated seats would definitely be a nice touch! Good idea. Thanks for watching!

Before you all laugh at the Town Car’s relatively low power output considering its 4.6 litre engine displacement and make some comment about your lawnmower having more power per litre, what you need to understand is this: the Town Car isn’t about speed or horsepower or quarter mile times. It’s all about delivering a smooth, comfortable and luxurious ride at any speed, and the Town Car delivers this in spades. It’s because of this that I like to think of the Town Car as a ‘poor man’s Mercedes S-Class’. This also applies to the Town Car’s sister cars, the Ford Crown Victoria & the Mercury Grand Marquis. Not only that, but because of the body-on-frame design and the fact that the Town Car’s V8 engine is massively under-stressed, the Town Car, along with its aforementioned Ford and Mercury sister cars, is notoriously reliable - one Town Car featured on Scotty Kilmer’s ‘Show-Off Sunday’ series on KZfaq had done 486,000 miles (486,609 miles, to be exact) at the time of filming.
