Altars were only part of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem which Jesus (given Name "YESHUA") prophesied would be torn down, and after His death there was no more need for any altars as animal sacrifices for sins were no longer needed. There is NOTHING in the New Testament instructing believers to erect ALTARS in their meeting places or even in their homes. These are ecclesiastical man-made traditions invented by denominational clergy that no one should feel obligated to venerate or practise as it is contrary to simple Biblical example. There will be no altars in heaven. This is bordering on superstition & is totally unnecessary.

There are very many things we do in life that are not in the New Testament. We still do them. One example being crossing yourself as a form of prayer. The evidence is that crossing yourself was a practice done by very early Christians, written in the 3rd century as being a very old tradition. Very many Traditions of the Church developed in tandem with the development of Scripture. In fact, the New Testament itself is one of the Orthodox Traditions which developed from the Orthodox Church. The New Testament importantly mentions many thing that should NOT be done, and none of these are mentioned, even though it was a time when many current practices of Orthodox Christians would have been done..

@@ArchangelIcon But they shouldn't push their later man-made traditions on the people. Every church I know forces it own doctrine and practice on people, which is against Christian freedom. If God or Jesus commands or ordains it it has more merit than religious tradition.

@@scented-leafpelargonium3366 Life is full of 'traditions' 'forced on you'. Our societies are filled with them, and you willingly comply, and you probably don't have any problem with that. The Church is a spiritual hospital. It's Traditions are designed to help to guide you to salvation. They aren't forced on you. They are a choice. Accept or reject, just as when a doctor prescribes treatment for an illness, you are free to not take it.

by 'him' do you mean God? please make your comments clearer. you don't understand what the First Commandment means; it is prohibiting the worship of false gods via idols. remember in the Holy of Holies there were 2 statues of cherubim (as directed by God). after the Incarnation is became legitimate and good to make Icons of Our Lord, His All Holy Mother and His Saints. try to understand we venerate, respect and love the All Holy Ever Virgin Mother and the Saints which is DIFFERENT from worship. only God the Life Giving Trinity is worshipped.
