For those who have no tipping culture, tipping is optional and only given if the service received is above and beyond the call of duty. Cabin steward usually looks after 6 to 8 cabins, if $5 is the normal will ge $40 per day which is probably more than his paid salary.

I always tip my cabin steward $100.00 at the beginning of my cruise and at the end of my cruise $100.00 I tend to give this tip as I know they usually go above and beyond for us when ask them for something 😊

You are absolutely right, this is very personal and will be different for every person. However, what will help people calculate their individual response to this will be understanding how the pay workks and how both automated and xmcash gratuities are handled on a cruise e.g do cash tips have to be reported to an accounting department or do crew get to pocket them immediately? If you can do a video in thisnregard, it will be more helpful.

We always give our cabin steward an extra tip on top of the prepaid gratuities. They work much more for you than any other crew member. It’s not a bad idea to give some extra at the beginning of the cruise. They remember you for that!

Great advice. Thanks. Yeah, it seems to be a popular option to give some at the beginning and then at the end. It keeps you in there thoughts then. They do work hard i completely agree, especially in the time they have each day to perform their duties. Thanks for watching. Russell :)

I do, when they earn it. My cruise last month, did not. Same spilled coffee stain on the table for 5 days. They finally cleaned it the last day.

We usually give Steward 20.00 at beginning of cruise and 20.00 on debarkation. On top of gratuities. We always leave any unopened snacks, wine we didn't open behind for them.

Nice, I think what you do is perfect and well deserved for the work they do. As i said, there is really no right or wrong answer. It really comes down to how you interacted with your steward, how he or she kept your room and how you felt about your cruise. Thanks for your views. Russell :)

it's not a tip to give them the ships' supply, which they already get. Also, they get below-cost liquor in crew areas..... in other words, you are a cheap s.o.b.

I have had nothing but awesome cabin stewards and waiters onboard Carnival ships. When someone usually ask me I tell them to think about all the hard work they put out to make your vacation awesome. Then I say give from your heart. I usually tip my waiter, waitress and room attendant $20/day on top of the pre paid gratuities. Just my thoughts!

I am Australian, 70, and never received a tip whilst doing any form of work. Not one of my friends or acquaintances has either. Tipping seems particulary American. Here is an idea. Why not pay the crew a real wage. Add the additional company costs to the fare and avoid all these confusing, embarrassing complications?

It’s not gonna happen though. That’s why one needs to tip. Just because people were assholes to you and yours, doesn’t mean you need to be that way to other people. Just tip.

I totally agree and if I was to go cruising there would be a lot of unhappy staff. This is just an American thing that has the rest of the world baffled. Just PAY the Staff a decent wage. Luckily I live and worked in the UK were tipping seldom happens because we have a Legally binding Minimum Wage system set down by the Govt. A NEW School leaver being the lowest paid and each year as they get older their Hourly rate would rise. The Minimum wage increases every year until you get to retirement age then the Govt starts repaying some of the Tax you have paid in your working Life as a State Paid Pension (Which I am now receiving and it is more than my Last month Salary) Tony in England

'struth mate, couldn't agree more. The US tipping culture has got completely out of hand. When I'm on a cruise I always pull the automatic daily tips. Being a Brit I thought that tips were 'discretionary' NOT mandatory! Why should I tip a billion dollar cruise line? Fuck them, just pay your people a decent wage.

It was very helpful. As you said, we don’t tip here in Australia and I know that our gratuities are included in our fare. I’ll certainly be keeping the $5-$10 in mind. Thank you for reassuring me. My next cruise isn’t until ‘23 but I can’t wait. 💕

Right, in Australia we don't tip in general. For the cruises, when you book from Australia the gratuities are prepaid, and a part of the cruise fare. vs. when you book a cruise in the US and you have the option to add your gratuities at the time of booking, or let the cruise line add it in later. If you are wanting to tip over and above the standard amount, i think the $5 or $10 amount is more than fair.

Going on my first cruise in a week. (Aug 2022) I've worked in customer service most of my life, and appreciate the effort made by wait staff, cab drivers, bellmen, etc. I'm going to give my cabin steward $50.00 right off the bat. (4 night cruise) I believe in "giving" to "get"!

I think for sure people like your bar waiters and bar tenders that a great idea. But for your cabin steward its really a personal choice, some at the beginning, some at the end. It can sometimes boil down to how much interaction you might have with them also. For me, though, I like to give my cabin steward money at the end.

I like to tip $20 each to the Lead Cabin Steward and Assistant Cabin Steward on Day 1 so that they know they are getting an Additional Tip on top of the Cruise Line Prepaid Cabin Gratuity which I also do. I also inform the Lead Steward and Assistant Steward that I also paid the Prepaid Cruise Line Gratuity. This way the Stewards know they have been generously tipped and are happy to service your cabin.

We are on a Viking river cruise right now and are paying $45.00 per person per day. I feel that is on the steep side but my husband was wondering if we're expected to leave extra for our room steward. I think $90/day is quite enough.

I leave auto gratuity on, but Princess states they pool the tips fleet wide and use it for compensation and bonuses. So my waiter and cabin steward may not see it. I tip the cabin steward an extra $10/day ($70/week) and my senior waiter gets $50/week and the junior waiter gets $40/week.

@@Andy-lm2zp the reason I leave it on and tip extra, is because on Princess, (per a chat with pcl,) if you take auto off, the crew has to hand in any cash tips they receive.

You are already paying gratuities. There is no reason to pay extra. A cruise worker from the Philippines is making double what the average doctor from their country makes. On top of that free rent and food. There is this thought that these workers make nothing, but relatively, they are absolutely banking.

$5-$10. Are u kidding me. There was usually a three person team doing the cabin steward work and now there’s been two persons. So if you gave $10 divided by three equals $3.33 divided by seven equals less than $.50 a day. The Cabin Stewart does not keep this all for himself. He shares with his team. So what I try to do is give you $20 per person for a seven day cruise. That may still be a little cheap but thats $60 if there’s three of them and that has been the case a lot . And that’s almost $3 per day each. Not much when you look at it from that perspective. So I’m still in a quandary that I’m too cheap.

First off, they do get paid in addition to what you tip. Second, they do more than one room a day. Third, if you are worried about being cheap after paying for the cost of a cruise, you might want to get professional help.

No one explains why we should tip. In my 50+ years on this planet I have never received any tips for any of my jobs. If I didn't like the hourly pay I was getting I looked for another job. If the employer needed workers they offered better base pay. For American cruises why add gratuities for a subset of employees as a prepaid additional expense identified as optional if it is compensation the employee depends on? Sounds like a bad industry practice that has to change but won't as long as people continue to support it. Just add it to the fare if it really is a required expense and then let the employee be grateful when they do go above and beyond and receive a real tip for their efforts. I would be insulted if someone gave me extra money out of fear that I wouldn't do my job properly otherwise.

OP it is beyond comprehension that you are so preoccupied with the material things Extra tip for this crew member that crew member this cruise line that cruise line mathematically working out to the finest detail these seafarers are being paid fairly and equitably if their service is exceptional then they will be tipped extra accordingly there are also alternative ways to express the appreciation for their outstanding services such as preparing a Hand Written letter of Appreciation address to the Management of the onboard Cruise ship the letter can be handed in to the Captain of the ship through the Front Desk of Customer Service and ask for a copy of the letter which can be passed on to the Employee involved one can request that the letter of Appreciation to be retained in the employee personal file for future advancement review Viewer have had done this before and the crew member was just as appreciative a written comment can be one of the major reasons for Promotion / Demotion which can be a life line for seafarer
