This advice missed out on the most important question: how much do they expect to spend on college? If they have $160K and they expect to spend $160K, they're done! Cash out. Start investing other places for other purposes.

How much do you put to a weekly or monthly basis? I got one at 18 and only put in $300 and it raised to $400. I keep pulling back.

@@hollowfragment237 Roth maxes out at $6k a year. To be able to take full advantage between tax deadlines, you need to put in $500 a month.

@@hollowfragment237 Glad to hear your being smart, well I keep hearing 15% of your gross income and it makes sense to me, google why 15%. My max roth ira is 6k a year, so I can put in $500 a month. So since my 15% is more than 6k for a roth, I would then split the other with my 401k from just as an example. Dave is pretty smart, I follow alot of his words.

Stock prices are inversely related to interest rates too. I.e. If interest rates rise, it's not just bond prices that fall. Stock prices would fall also.

Not everyone can handle the volatility of a 100% stock portfolio. Nor does it make sense for everyone’s time horizon. To say bonds are a waste is a silly generalization.

@@alexm260 Returns on an SP500 Index ETF will outperform any bond yield. Bonds sell yourself short. They are safe to barely keep you above inflation

@@MoD3RnHD Stocks give higher long term returns, yes. That doesn’t make them appropriate for every situation though, since peoples risk tolerance and time horizon are all different. This is literally investing 101.

@@MoD3RnHD If you are buying bonds to provide an income stream and plan on holding them until maturity, they are a great financial tool. They are not a growth product and shouldn't be compared to a growth investment.

It appears that he is using this money in the next 2-5 years. Makes sense to have them in bonds actually. If this was a long term investment you would be right.

Dave is correct that lower interest rates reduce the value of bonds but it is not by a huge amount. If you look at something like Vanguards Bond fund even at the height of the pandemic it only dropped from 22 to 19.6. I personally would not touch bonds until I am either retired or a few years from retirement and I don't want any surprises.

I'm not a fan of the expected returns on t-bills these days. Yield to maturity on 20+ is under 2%. But I think there's still value as they've been historically uncorrelated to stocks. That relationship is expected to hold so long as we don't face high inflation.

From Kingsport, TN: My company offers HSA savings and matches my 401k at 6%. It's the first time I've ever saved for any retirement. I'm 33 and appreciate conversation on investments. I've read at least two of your books and watched your YT channel a long time. It feels good to be with a good company, too!

Good job! Im 32 and have followed Dave's investment style in my 401k, and it has preformed at around 12% average over 7 years. My advice to you is to keep up the good work, the snowball is rolling for you and it will grow before you know it.

I know it's what is CHARGED, but $160K for an education you can get from GOOGLE is ridiculous! Both of our daughters went to Florida Universities. Between in-state pricing, merit scholarships, working as RAs and at the gym, "OUR" school costs were next to nothing for very marketable CHEMISTRY & BIOLOGY degrees.

Dave was spot on but the interest rate risk can be reduced by using shorter term bonds. Now that rates are high it's a great time to buy 30 year bonds.

165k in college savings is dumb. Go to a local 2 year college for 10k, then transfer to a state college for 20-30k.

No US bonds, ever. The return is lower than real inflation and furthermore the assurance of payment is overkill. If you must have bonds, buy them from higher paying countries that are still solvent and will pay the coupon.

LOL! Dave's advice is one of a drunken sailor... always invest in 4 types of mutual funds, risky, risky, risky, and more risky. He never advises anything safe like savings or bonds. Not even German Bearer Bonds like those depicted in Die Hard. The truth is, depending on age, risk tolerance, and income, you should have a good mix of all.

If you have bonds "from like three decades ago" you should look into them and consider changes. Savings bonds, for instance, stop accruing interest 30 years from issue.

Bond funds are not bonds. Bond funds and bonds you intend to actually sell before maturity surely behave as Dave has said. However, high quality individual bonds can be a stabilizer as they simply are what they are if the payer does not default and you ride them to maturity. That does not mean they are the best investment, as that locks you into a potentially bad interest rate.

Cash has risks too. With such an increase in the money supply, inflation is around the corner and will seriously erode the value of your cash holdings. Although bonds are sensitive to interest rates, it has much less volatility than stocks and mutual funds.

The caller plans on spending 100% of this money within the next five years. If stocks go down substantially in the short term, he may have dip into retirement or ask his child to take out loans.

HORRIBLE advice. Stocks are highly volatile in the short term. If you're worried about bonds, the majority of that portfolio should be in CASH. The kid is about to go to college, and stocks can have MASSIVE losses in the short term.

Yeah, this didn’t age well. You don’t take a “long range” view this late in a 529. With it being fully funded lock in the growth and use it for the next four years. You can’t treat it the same as a retirement account.

The volatility of a total bond fund is a small fraction of a total stock fund. If it’s a short term goal, he is far more at risk from a stock decline than from a bond decline. Terrible investing advice as per usual.

@@ememman1460 Stocks are “much more short term than bonds”? I don’t even know what you are trying to say. Are you trying to say stock declines are shorter lived? Sometimes, not always. And the declines can be multiple times more severe. Dave would never tell someone to invest in stocks for a short term goal, so it makes no sense to keep your money there for the same goal.

@@james1000 There's plenty of minimal risk investments that don't pay out interest rates far below the inflation rate. Bonds are almost entirely used by the elderly folk who never caught on to far better ways to invest. They're a waste of money.

LOL, you don't know what a mutual fund is, do you? I've never heard Dave push a specific company's funds. So no, he's not getting any kickbacks for recommending certain funds. He does, however, get paid if you go through one of his recommended advisors. But you can invest in mutual funds without using one of those people. I don't have an advisor, I direct all my own investing. And I buy nothing but mutual funds.

No bonds at all. Look up Jack Bogle’s interviews about his bond allocation experience and thoughts. Long form interview with motley fool. Month to month year to year volatility in an investment that you won’t be touching for 30 years is irrelevant. Completely irrelevant. Has no bearing on the actual companies you own shares in.

If I was in the callers situation, I'd be at half cash and half bonds with he college fund. Except I wouldn't have $100+K in a college fund for one kid. I'll pay for my kid to go to an in state college she can commute to. Paying over 100k to send a kid out of state when it won't improve their future earnings is stupid and I'd be teaching her to make stupid decisions. She would be better served if I saved the difference and funded a Roth IRA for her for her first 5 to 10 years of work.

For I 529 I not sure about the ratio. But overall I believe your portfolio should be your age = the % of bonds. So a 25 year old should have 25% bonds on their portfolio

Old advice... S&P 500 has historically recovered from any downturn within 10 years max... 25% bonds at 25 years old is nuts imo... missing your best years of compounding interest... 100% stocks at that age... I’m 35, and we’re still 100% stocks
