That first year really set the tone for all the drama that followed. KD and Kyrie taking less than the max so the Nets can give DeAndre Jordan 40M because all 3 came as a packaged deal. I would almost feel bad for the Nets if they didn't actually pursue these players; they literally asked for it. But having Kyrie and Simmons, the two of the biggest head-cases in the NBA would be exhausting. Though they did get rid of another Diva in Harden so there's that. If there are any die-hard Nets fans out there (those who rooted for them before getting these "All-Stars") I feel bad for them.

If I was a billionaire owner of an NBA team I think I would be embarrassed if my team had these issues. It's one thing to be a small market team whose made some questionable decisions, but it's another to be a big market team with All-NBA talent, that let that talent run the organization into the ground. The era of "player empowerment" needs to end. Narcissistic egomaniacs are taking over entire franchises, demanding to be paid millions, demanding to play with their friends, dictating when and how they will or won't play games which I don't even understand how any of that isn't considered a breach of their contracts. Players being empowered has turned into players being babied and coddled and given the keys to the bus they have zero experience or qualifications to drive.

This is the epitome of "(can't)have your cake and eat it too". It used to be (and still is everywhere else) that the money was the compensation and the "price" of you taking orders, even if sometimes those orders were garbage and you didn't like doing them. But now the players want the money and want to give the orders. By the way, the money is the most it's ever been by a huge degree. I remember in the mid 2000s for example, that the "max contract" type of players would make in the high teens (in millions) at the beginning of a deal and low 20s by the end. Like, starting at $17.5 million and four years later it's $21 million. That's how much the decent starter makes now! Bench players are making $15 mil a year! And then you have the supreme divas like Simmons, Harden and Kyrie making $40+ mil a year, and they want even more! Not just in terms of cash but in "say so". Sorry, but the money *is* the compensation; not more power in decision making. And these players run the risk of alienating *everyone* if they whine at the next CBA, talking about not being properly compensated. I love the NBA, but I absolutely hate "stars" like Harden, Simmons, Kyrie, Westbrook who feel as if no rules apply to them and get offended and angry about things in their job description like answering reporters after games and, I dunno, actually playing!

Any time you let your players be your GM or pick you players, it doesn't work. Years ago after the Rangers signed A-Rod from Seattle he not only told them to sign a bunch of players, he was also trying to plan strategies for the team. The team was a 71 win team when they signed him and didn't win more than 73 games with him...only to win 89 games the year after they got rid of him. LeBron wanted Westbrook, so they gave up all their depth to get him, they missed the playoffs. KD and Irving wanted to sign DeAndre Jordan for at least 3 times what he was worth, then they wanted him to play over Allen who is _exactly_ the guy they needed this year in that dunker's spot and who could protect the rim. KD/Irving wanted Harden so they gave up everything to get him.
@Anthonydu01630
@Anthonydu01630 2 жыл бұрын
Lebron also wanted AD, 1 ring, he also wanted Love, 1 ring 4 consecutive finals, and he called Wade and Bosh to join force, 2 rings 4 consecutive finals .. You can say what you want about Lebron, you don’t win every year, but he won a ring with every team he made. If he had that power before 2010 it would have been scary, imagine Lebron with just an old but experienced points guard like Jason Kidd, a beast like KG or just a good big like Stoudemire, young Bron was scary, it would have been over for the league, just like in the 2010´s.
@andrewshandle
@andrewshandle 2 жыл бұрын
@@Anthonydu01630 Pat Riley was still in charge in Miami, so that doesn't apply. Riley isn't doing something equivalent to the Westbrook deal to appease LeBron, the biggest thing he did was drafting Napier with the 24th pick. In LA he wanted Davis, but so did the Lakers, now LeBron helped that happen of course, but let's not pretend the Lakers weren't already thinking about him. When stars go full GM mode and start picking the roster is fails _way_ more than it works, we have way more evidence of this than it succeeding.

I’m so glad you started this conversation. If you bring in a player, pay him over 20% of your salary cap and guarantee it for multiple years, that’s your business partner. 1) Can I trust this person to reliably do what needs to be done? 2) Does the person want to do what it takes to do the job well? 3) Do I want to work with this person? If more ownership groups thought about it that way, I think we would have less bad contracts.

To the "keeping the bad asset" point, it's much harder to give up on a star who is 1 of 15 than a star who is 1 of 53. Even when that 1 of 53 is a QB, the NBA player leaves a bigger hole when you lose them for nothing. But I don't know if that's true in this case because both Kyrie and Ben Simmons are so toxic.

History and market dynamics are definitely on your side but this season may be a perfect storm of circumstances that finally breaks down the multiple superstar philosophy. You have Russ totally derailing the Lakers, Simmons being a no show, Harden being Harden and meanwhile you have teams like the Bucks, Grizzlies and Suns that not only look most capable to win this year but for years to come. Boston is in that middle ground but I think that organization is smart enough to not get too top heavy and will be able to retool when it comes time to back up the truck for Tatum. The superstars of yesterday just aren't worth it, the superstars of tomorrow is what you need to invest in and build around that with great team culture, identity and self aware role players

Business decision means making money. I think having Kyrie and Ben Simmons there helps with getting the team known as well as selling tickets and merch. This might be a worse team from a basketball view but it will make them more money or at least they won’t loose as much of their investment. If they don’t sign Kyrie and KD walks away because of that, they will loose out on a lot more than the money they spend on Kyrie now.

These guys don't have to go shop, cook, or work within a set schedule for meals and rest like us regular folks do when our work schedule conflicts with other things. The Nets may be in a situation they have to pay Kyrie off so he stays and if Simmons can't or won't play the chemistry will likely be even worse next season if they don't find a zone like Memphis or Miami been on. Kyrie also had all of those days off during the regular season, where he was ineligible for refusing to take the vaccine, to experiment with how fasting would effect his energy level and stamina. The Rockets are choosing to sit out Wall, Westbrook is playing. Just because Westbrook isn’t playing “up to his contract” shouldn’t affect how max contracts are viewed. Plus, he played well enough prior to his year. The teams gave these guys those contracts. One can argue that they had no other “choice”: risk losing a franchise player to free agency. Increase the salary cap then, billionaire owners!

KD's a coward? Nah. Dude got old. Chuck had it right: he's only got energy to be great every other game in the playoffs and was being guarded by a young stud like Tatum. I actually feel sorry for KD: he got betrayed not once but twice. Most reports have Harden leaving because he was sick of Kyrie not showing up. Hey, it's one thing if your teammate is injured, but.... Let's take the positive: this year's playoffs is Tatum's coming out party as an elite player. Not just an all star, but one of the best few in the league.

You know what the craziest story is that’ll never happen? LeBron shooting Kyrie a text or call and saying something like “if things don’t work out there, you always got a home here in LA.” Something smooth, then in the off-season maybe next year if Russ is still there package him for Kyrie. Unlikely as hell, crazy theory but it would be crazy to see Kyrie with Bron again and KD with Russ and now Ben

Sean Marks had a good thing going until he mistakenly signed Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Sean KNOWS better because he's experienced better when he helped the San Antonio Spurs remain perpetual winners. Joe Tsai should retake this organization from Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Identify a model you want the Brooklyn Nets to establish and pay someone to install it. When it comes down to the Star players, only Kevin Durant has shown positive value towards winning a championship. If Kyrie opts out of his contract, tell him to secure his next team so we can orchestrate a sign-and-trade. If a team is willing to relinquish a sufficient package in exchang for Simmons, Nets must explore it. Kyrie and Ben are anchors and the ship is taking on too much water while stuck in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean
