Reilly Smith looked like he was going to be the perfect fit for Evgeni Malkin this year after being acquired during the offseason, but it ultimately wasn't meant to be. Patrick and Hunter look back at Smith's season, what caused such a regression, and what the Penguins should do with him moving forward. Then, unfortunately, the Wheeling Nailers' season came to an end this weekend in a sweep at the hands of the Toledo Walleye. I can see jarry and blomquist as the nhl tandem and Larson and Gauthier as ahl tandem. As you guys said you don't want to rush any ones development. You also have to challenge them to get the peak performances so I think its time for them to step up.

Dubas should have a meeting with Smith to see where his head is. Simply "Do you want to be here?" If he does, great...it's a contract year, so you can, probably, expect him to have a breakout season. If he doesn't want to be in the 'Burgh, then you find out where he'd like to go (top three) and try to accommodate him.

i know the Preds have interest in him, i’d find a way to get him in a 3 way deal to get Saros here.

If you can get a 3rd rounder back for him its a good deal as long as the other team takes on his full salary. If they want retention go for a 2nd rounder. I think he gets dealt sometime this summer. That 5 mil in cap space could bring in a pretty decent winger for crosby. The way bunting played with malkin and rakell, i wouldnt touch that line at the start of next season.

Unless you can trade him without retention, you bring him back. You won't win that deal. You play him with Crosby. He's actually a really good 5v5 player, who was about 10-20% worse at 5v5 this year than his average. It wasn't as tragic of a season as people claim. Good chance he's better next year, especially with the shooting. Plus he's a high-end PK'er. Sullivan was a fool to only use him for 55 mins on the PK this season. His PPGA/60 was #1 on the team. He was a known, excellent PK'er in summer 2023 too. His rate was over 4x better than Rust's.

I’m just not sure I’d be willing to bank on a big bounce-back from him. It’s definitely happened before in prior seasons but with his age, I’m a little skeptical. I think his best play came on the third line this season (outside of a small hot stretch with Geno at the beginning of the year) but I don’t wanna pay $5M for that. He was on Sid’s line for a little bit this season (small sample) but I wasn’t a big fan of how he played up there eye test wise (I’ll have to dig more into the data for that to see if it matches my eye test) but I really think they can do better with that cap space. If there’s a player I’d bank on bouncing back with that cap hit if he comes back, I think it’d be Rakell imo - Hunter

@@LockedOnPenguins Do we need a big bounceback from Smith though? He had 40 points in a PP2 role, with declining Malkin. What was a realistic expectation? I didn't expect any more than 45, personally. Maybe the goal count should be a nudge higher, but not by a lot. Like 18g-27a I woulda been happy with, especially since he was pretty solid defensively too. Could be a lot better that way than his replacement, right? Use him on the PK all year and he can give you like a 90 percentile performance. Rust had a very strong season in the same role, but that's way above average for those 5mil winger types. Plus Rust played with Sid and Jake, and got empty net situations. That's not a realistic bar for anyone we bring in for 5 mil. I definitely wouldn't expect over 50 points with no PP1. Smith's 5v5 P/P60 was 1.80. That's above Rakell and Zucker's career average, for example. It really wasn't that awful for a top 6 winger. It may have been bad for HIM, since he's a particularly strong even-strength player since joining Vegas. But that's what I mean, he has room to realistically improve next year, with him being better settled emotionally in Pittsburgh now. Rakell on the other hand played like his career average. I don't expect much from him. Then again, Bunting looked like a real fit with him, so that could help. The real big difference I see between them is Smith is much smarter. Better hockey IQ. More adaptable to different situations. Smarter shooter, which we desperately need more of. His shooting % was super low, and is bound to improve next year. Rakell's the contract I'd love to unload. Don't need him for special teams. Don't need for defense. And it goes until he's 36. I just don't think the Pens will get someone better than Smith with what they have leftover after retention. And I don't see Dubas offering a pick to unload the full 5 mil.

I mean, IMO, yes I’m looking for a real bounce-back. 13 goals and 40 points is below what I (and potentially most?) expected for someone who was coming in to replace Jason Zucker. He was expected to come in and be a strong top six winger and I really think he was anything but that. His sh% was obviously the worst it’s been but I expect more than 13 goals from someone who makes $5M and who was brought in to score. I do think playing him on the PK could help more but I also know HCMS loves putting Rust on there so I’m curious to see how he does. Dug into some data for Smith w Crosby and the numbers were…fine? Nothing groundbreaking tho. I’m in agreement with you on Rakell with how his contract is but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did keep him to see if they can get a bounce back year from him (Id still look to move him first).
