The seconds saved (and lost!) during a pit stop can be the difference between a champion and a racer who doesn't place. If we playback a video of a NASCAR pit crew, we can see all the things they do precisely in an incredibly short amount of time.
*This video is about the 5 lug nut pit stop that is still used on the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Camping World truck Series.
PIT Instruction and Training has trained pit crew athletes for the sport of NASCAR since 2001. With nearly 70% of its eight hundred and sixty-five students having raced in NASCAR’s top three divisions, PIT has proven itself to be a high capacity producer of pit crew talent for the motorsports industry. Interested in taking the pit crew path? Call 704-799-3869 or email pitcrew@visitpit.com for details on how to begin your new career in the pits.
Adam Merrell has been coaching pit crews within NASCAR since 2006 and has coached multiple stock car and truck teams since joining PIT Instruction & Training in 2007. He is a certified and licensed athletic trainer (ATC/L), and a certified strength & conditioning coach (CSCS) by trade, which has strengthened his knowledge in biomechanics and coaching to help place pit crew members at the highest level with championship teams.

Jesus... this is a doctorate level education not just in not pit stops, but in biomechanical efficacity. I'm not the biggest NASCAR fan at all - I'm all F1 - but as far as nuance and technique are concerned, THIS is the definition of economy of motion. STUNNING video.

I agree. I did not realise just how thought out every single movement was in a NASCAR pit stop, down to the number of steps between each objective. Not a real fan of the sport (at least not watching it) but you can't help respecting this meticulously choreographed pit dance. Fascinating video.

Worth noting that the new NASCAR cars only use a single lug per tire, a la F1. The amount of time to tighten that one lug is about the same as the five before.
@rockerseven
@rockerseven Жыл бұрын
Local tire shop: "So what we try to do is maximize the amount of distance our guys travel, so as you can see he puts down his tool, and takes 87 steps over to the desk to take a beverage break. Immediately after, he takes a maximum amount of time to walk over to his colleague so they can chit chat for no less than 15 to 16 minutes about what they're going to do that weekend. We teach them to always drop one or two lugnuts so they have to spend 17 minutes to look for it. We try to not service the tools so they start to malfunction and stretches the amount of time it takes to change the tires. We're always aiming for a minimum of 2 hours."

Why don't the guys just wait on the other side instead of having to cross the path

Probably for safety. But different racing classes have different ways of approaching safety.

Incredibly busy pit lanes with around 40 cars all coming for service at the same time, pit boxes i believe are closer than in Formula (1,2,3) series plus the rules state pit crew can't leave the pit wall until your car is within 1 pit box of the your pit box. Also unlike in F1 etc as long as you aren't exceeding the speed limit you can race on pit road there is no requirement for you to make sure that your path is clear before being released

I know zero about Nascar. So thank you all! The only thing I know about pit stops is smokes, beer or a slurpee
