In part one of this medieval history series about the Hundred Years War, Kevin Hicks offers a simplified insight into the squabbles and family feuds that sparked the Hundred Years War. Actually lasting 116 years, this long war with its battles, sieges and skirmishes devastated France and left England impoverished and in a state of civil war.
In his unique style, Kevin explores the key players and tries to track back to who and what triggered one of the longest wars in history.

@@thehistorysquad that's interesting, I'm presently doing a project on the British retreat from Mons in 1914. I paint miniatures and actually smiled when you mentioned Perry's. @@thehistorysquad I was a gunner for my sins, but the last ten years I spent in staff appointments and J2. I finished in 2003. If you have an email I can send some pictures of the German 77mm artillery battery I have just finished. I am just basing the cavalry and infantry units. There's a lot to do, but it keeps me occupied. I must focus on the old contemptibles next, they are sadly lacking in troops (much like the real event) and the poor devil's are looking somewhat embattled on my wargames table. It's good to 'chat' with another soldier. My old RAF pal passed away a couple of years ago and I miss pulling up the old sandbag and swinging the lantern, so to speak. You stay safe over there!

Hello, since you ask how "Sluys" is pronounced, I am a Flemish, my roots being in Zelzate (a Belgian frontier town and which is close to Sluis, a Netherlands or Zeeland border town). Sluys is now written Sluis: you should pronounce the ui (or uy if you prefer) like the vowel in "bird", hurt" or "nerd". It is not entirely that sound, but it is close. It is not at all pronounced like you pronounce it (Slouizz like in "Louis"zz): a Dutch needs to read it then to understand it (LOL). Thanks by the way for the lectures, enjoy them very much. Sincerely, Dirk.

Wow, thanks Dave. I live in Canada now and rarely do shows in public (thanks to COVID), but who knows in the future.......for now though I'm enjoying delivering these little snippets of history through KZfaq. Where in Wales are you from? My wife is Welsh 👍🏻

Very interesting as usual. I discovered Kevin Hicks' channel by accident (well, may be better to say by chance) and since love to watch it. May I say too that, though I'm French, I also love his so typical accent which is, in my opinion, the salt of these episodes ? Anyway, Kevin spoke here about Robert of Artois, he could make a whole episode about that fascinating guy who had a very important role in the beginning of the Hundred Years' War

I know I'm late to the party, but it may be worth putting the hundred years war series into a playlist for youtube. As you continue to make content they may get quite buried beneath all the other videos. Otherwise, great content. I am glad there are channels like yours around.

Ever wonder why most staircases in medieval castles were built to be extremely narrow and spiraling in a clockwise direction? Since medieval castles were built mainly as fortifications, staircases were designed to make it extremely difficult for enemy combatants to fight their way up. Since most soldiers were right-handed, they would need to round each curve of the inner wall before attempting to strike, inevitably exposing themselves in the process. The clockwise spiral staircase also allowed the defenders to use the inner wall as a partial shield and easily allow them to swing their weapon without being hindered by the curvature of the outer wall. The stairs were also intentionally poorly lit and built to be uneven, making it even more difficult for the attackers to gain any sort of balance or momentum during their fight up to capture the castle.

Oooh, well spotted - you've uncovered a secret. As part of my ancestry of a Staffordshire lad, my Staffordshire family went right through Staffs into Cheshire and it's always a quiet, proud part of my own history. I will for sure cover the Cheshire archers whenever I can, especially when I do the Battle of Shrewsbury, but I won't mention oatcakes 😜
