This year UKRAINE surprise the world and itself. Despite violent russian aggression, not only we survived - we became stronger and more united with our global allies. I have asked our favorite KZfaqrs what surprised them personally about Ukraine in 2022 and here are the answers!
Let us know, what surprised you about Ukraine in 2022 too?
00:00 - Did I expect 2022 to be the way it was? No! How russian war in Ukraine changed Ukrainians.
02:13 - What were the biggest surprises about Ukraine for‪@JakeBroe‬?
Jake`s prediction about 2023 is that Ukrainian militry will be victorious in driving the russian forces out. And I personally loved his words "The more I learn about Ukraine, the more I want to know".
04:05 - ‪@arturrehi‬ is confident, nobody can break Ukrainian spirit with missiles.
04:21 - Three things that surprised ‪@VladVexler‬ are: 1) despite russian attack on Ukraine, Ukraine survived and kept on functioning; 2) the sense of solidarity that united the country and 3) President Zelensky who proved individuals change history and became the voice of Ukraine in the world.
Thank you for watching and your support!

Brings tears to the eyes of this old retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer (served a year-and-a-half in Vietnam -- that's ancient!). I learned about Anna, Vlad, and Artur from Jake. And I subscribe to all of you. You're factual, philosophical, informative, intelligent, precious human beings. If I were "fresh" from military service (that is, single, a half-century younger, and back from service in a war zone and up on my military skills), I'd chuck everything and volunteer in any capacity in Ukraine. The fight for freedom is focused squarely on Ukraine. I'm a history buff, and I knew some of Ukraine's history. I remember, as a very young kid the national arguments for and against sending grain to Russia in the late 1950s when Ukraine was unable to harvest enough grain for the USSR. I wondered why. But as a teen, I read about Stalin's purges, the collectivization of farms, and the famines and mass starvation in Ukraine of the 1930s. I also learned about Operation Barbarossa and how Hitler trammeled the hopes of Ukrainians who had cheered liberation from the Soviet boot but learned that they were simply more Slavic sub-humans in his eyes. Ukraine has had a tough history in its struggle for an independent identity and nation. I hope for victory and the expulsion of the savages from Ukraine in 2023 so that everyone in Ukraine can take stock and begin the long rebuilding process, forever free from the omnipresent Russian threat. Happy New Year to all! 👍

What surprised me is that I found myself. At 67, I knew my ancestry was mostly Ukrainian but I really didn't know what that meant. Sure, I knew about Pysanki for Easter, a few dances, and some beautiful fabric. The rest I thought was just the way my grandmother and my dad's 8 brothers and sisters, their kids, and my maternal grandfather were. They were mostly good, decent, loving, intelligent, creative, caring people. I thought I was just lucky to have a family of good people. But I did know they were a bit exceptional in that my mom was Jewish and my dad Eastern Orthodox, and that the whole family had no problem with the differences. My grandmother expressed her worries for my immortal soul if I wasn't Christened and she asked my mom if there was any way she could let me be Christened in the church. My mom loved her and wanted her mind put at ease and said "of course", so I was Christened in the earlier version of a beautiful church with characteristic architecture in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. My dad was made an officer in the Air Force in WWII, and only spoke of it in the last 20 years of his life. He believed in science and freedom and education. My relatives all loved our entire family despite American religious accepted norms having to be stretched by society in 1949 when my parents got married. Love prevailed in my family. When the war started, I was truly disgusted by Putin's actions. Actually I was shocked that anyone in the 21st Century would still think military conquest of another peaceful country was even remotely acceptable. But when I saw the ingenuity, creativity, and unwillingness to just accept losing their freedom of the Ukrainian people, I was moved. I looked up Ukrainian history and saw the nature of Ukrainians throughout history, fighting to preserve sovereignty so many times as the rich agricultural land was coveted by all, and the historically repeatedly demonstrated character rejecting conquest that showed me they were just like my family, because they ARE MY FAMILY. I found my roots. I know why I am the man I am, and I am SO PROUD TO BE UKRAINIAN AMERICAN. I realized if I was younger and fit, I would be in Ukraine fighting those genocidal 21st Century NAZIS. But I would be a burden unless I could use my mind and not my body only to help. I think I may want to move there to help rebuild after we WIN THIS WAR. I did connect with friends in France and Germany and we got 2 mothers and 6 young children out to safety last April. They all want to return home as soon as possible. It was all I could do then. I see genetics are truly a huge part of who I am as a human being, and it feels wonderful to understand this. Ukrainians and the founding Americans have so much in common. Never Give Up Live FREE Or DIE fighting to be free. SLAVA UKRAINI

Living in Berkeley, California, Anna, I visualize how I might feel if the power was out for months and it was freezing cold and missiles were raining down on our State Capital, Sacramento, 90 miles (150 kM) away, the same distance as from your home in Lutsk to Lviv. And war raging in San Luis Obispo, home of my alma mater, Cal Poly, 240 miles (400 km) away, the distance from Lutsk to Kyiv. Fellow Californians, you know how scarily close that is. I do hope our President and Congress and NATO will immediately act on the urgent need to provide Ukraine with the long range weapons necessary to neutralize the Russian attacks ! Write your Senators and Congressmen and women ! Write the President ! Wishing a better New Year to you and yours, Anna. Храни Боже Україну ! До біса Путіна !

In an early news segment someone listed 3 books to read to understand ukraine and I went out and bought them . They are heavy reading but I keep going. 1. THE gates of Europe by Serhii Plokhy is profound.2. Red Famine by Anne applebaum 3. BLOODLANDS BY Snyder if anyone is looking for good books. Having said that, the you tubers like Anna and her guests have lifted my spirits when I've been worried sick that the world will abandon ukraine to the cruelty of Putin. I'm not overly religious but I thank God for youtubers that bypass mainstream media that has the attention span of a gnat. May the New Year bring strength to our better angels!!

Happy New Year to You and Yours Anna. The thing that amazed me about the Ukranian people at the begging of the war was that when the Russians started rolling in in the tanks on the highways, they tore down all the road signs! Also their determination against the Orks. An 80 year old man who states he became a bartender making molotov cocktails to throw at Russian tanks and how they built the tank blockers to protect the streets. They have such determination to WIN this war.

Even though I'm German, I must confess that I didn't know that much about Ukraine before February 2022. We weren't taught much in school about the (at that time) USSR, for cold war only being one of several reasons. A bit later there was the collapse of the soviet union, the reunification of East and West Germany, and all that followed with it. Of course I knew where Ukraine was located, a few city names and locations, I heard about the (obviously ruszian) poison attack on Juschtschenko, the Orange Revolution, the Euromaydan revolution, the annexation of Crimea and the obvious invasion of ruszian troops into the Donbas. But all of that was rather far away, and there were also a lot of other things to worry about at that time. But February 2022 changed all of that in quite a radical way. I still remember watching TV with some friends and worrying whether P°°tin would invade. I never trusted in the statements from the Kremlin that no invasion was planned. Because like Ulbricht once said "nobody intents to build a wall", and then they built it, I was pretty sure that P was lying, too. Unfortunately, I was right. We all know what happened then, and I'm still getting sick and furious at the same time when thinking about it. However, nobody would have imagined how it soon the tides turned for the invaders. And now, pretty much everybody on this side of reality expects nothing else than a devastating end for P and his fascist regime. But on the bright side, the situation gave me the chance to learn more about Ukraine, its people, and its history. And I was so surprised of all the things I didn't know before. Especially about one thing: The absolutely admirable people in Ukraine, brave and strong, showing such a wonderfully defiant attitude against the aggressor. But they're not using hatred and threaten violence like the ruszians do - the Ukrainians use sophisticated irony. I think that's one major point that brings much sympathy for Ukraine. And that why I'm especially happy that I found the channels of Operator Starsky and of you, Ana. Because both of you represent the best that Ukraine has to offer, and your nation can be proud having you. And besides that, if I may add, I think you not only stand out because of your attitude and your well chosen wording, but also by your classy style and how you also talk so fascinatingly with your eyes when presenting your content. Especially the latter shows, in my opinion, that all you say comes from the bottom of your heart and is truly what you think. This truthfulness, not only yours, but also of so many others who support, speak and work for Ukraine, will eventually turn things to the better, especially after Ukraine won and will be free again. Europe and the rest of the democratic world will be proud to have Ukraine among their allies. Victorious 2023 to Ukraine! Слава Україні!

As a person who lived in Ukraine for two years and loved every minute of it, I’m so grateful that the world now sees what I saw, that Ukrainians are very different from Russians and should not be assumed they are similar. Ukrainians are optimistic for the future, want to learn and grow. Russians, quite clearly, want to live in their authoritarian past so they do not need to think for themselves.

Anna I know between the KZfaq moments, you like all Ukrainians are experiencing moments of terrible sorrow, trauma, fatigue and grief for those Ukrainians killed and wounded, forced from the country, those displaced and who's homes and small communities have been destroyed, moments of worry for your own family and friends and especially all those fighting in the military on the front lines, but you come online today, looking gorgeous, in defiance of Putin, and expressing only certainty and hope, and we all who watch your videos and keep up solidarity with all Ukrainians, do not for one moment forget all that has and is happening to each person in your country though we express only positive thoughts and words. My hopes for this year is for that victory for Ukraine, removal of all Russian forces from all Ukranian territories, a collapse of the current regime in Russia and that somehow the seeds of a different Russia of future generations are sown in the aftermath, so that although I hope that Ukraine will be on the path to joining NATO so that it will never be in danger again, that no East European countries will live anymore in the shadow of aggression from a future Russia. Greetings from Ireland to you and your mother and peace to come this year to Ukraine.

Thank you Anna, Jake, Vlad and Arthur for all your work. It's a great time we're living in with the information possibilities there are. Before 2014 I knew nothing about Ukraine and between 2014 and 2021 the world looked away from Urkraine, only concentrating on the MH17 airplane disaster. When the war re-started in february last year it felt - to me - like my own country was attacked and since then try to inform myself with help of many of the vloggers of Ukraine. I can't help physically and financially for me it's a bit of a struggle too, but for what it's worth my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I truly believe Ukraine - with the help of the allies - can drive the invaders out and hopefully, like Jake said, join the EU and NATO so this will never happen again. Happy New Year to all of you and Slava Ukraine!

I for one share the same opinion and feeling toward Ukraine as Jake, Vlad, Art, and many other creators: sympathy for Ukraine's plight, admiration for the bravery of all Ukrainians in forming a solid front against tyrants, and nothing short of awe at the tenacity of Ukrainians and their leadership for their innovative, fierce, and super-efficient mastery of the art of self-defense. My best New Year's wishes for Ukraine for a speedy victory in this war, the reclamation of all that is rightfully yours, and a quick and healthy rebuilding of your world and your economy...Slava Ukraini!... 🙂 (Production note: The backing music is great, but maybe boost Anna's voice track, and/or reduce the music by perhaps a third. Her voice was being a little drowned out... 😕 ...)

A year ago, Ukraine was a country with a disfortunate Covid-19 statistics, a place with low cost music production, and a place I had been to long ago. I knew that you don't mess with Ukrainians and that you may ask a lot from those you count on. What surprised me is your competence in modern technology and the way you have handled your position internationally. Now you have been stepping with confidence into the world of independent, but not self-absorbed nations.

Anna, I think you are possibly unaware of the tremendous impact your YT blog has made on ordinary citizens of the free world. You epitomize the brave spirit of the Ukrainian people that has inspired so many nations, in fact by far the majority of nations worldwide, to support and aid your country. Your president has led your nation but without the support of ordinary citizens, his efforts may have been less effective. I warmly salute you and hope the war will soon be resolved with Ukraine as the victor and that all great nations will live in permanent peace together. I have just watched your president's New Year address and fully expect that when this war is over every city and town in Ukraine will honor his leadership through the enormous conflict and destruction caused by the invasion of your sovereign territory.

Happy New Year to you and all citizens of Ukraine. Best wishes for a free and peaceful Ukraine in the new year. Despite the terrible war, it is actually interesting how much more we know about Ukraine and the Ukrainian people today than we did a year ago (at least here in Norway). However, we used to know much more about Ukraine in Norway because the Norwegian explorer and diplomat Fridtjof Nansen received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his humanitarian work in Ukraine and Russia. Nansen became the League of Nations' first High Commissioner for Refugees in 1920 (the League of Nations was the forerunner of the UN). Nansen organized a large relief effort for the many millions of war refugees and civilians after the First World War who were victims of the first great famine in Russia and Ukraine. This unfortunately repeated itself in the years 1932-1933 when an estimated 4 million people died as a result of man-made famine in the Soviet Union (of which Ukraine was then a part). In Ukraine, this tragedy is called "Holodomor". Ukraine has indeed been severely tested throughout the ages and it is therefore very important that we know as much as possible about Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. You are doing a great job Anna. Keep up the good work.
