In finland we dont hate swedes. Its just kind of not serious hate. We just love to fuck around with swedes, mostly because of hockey. We call you gays and you call us patriotic, melancolic and also alcoholic fuckheads. Pretty fair right? I fucking hated learning swedish language at school. Its frustrating. Its just not easy when you have to learn english, swedish and in gollege you sometimes have to choose third language.

I have met Swedes who moved from Finland to Sweden to avoid harassement and discrimination in Finland. Finns seems to believe that all Swedes in Finland are Bättre Svendktalande Folk and deserves to be beaten up because of their privillges, like living in a mansion with Finnish speaking servants and being entitled to free scholarsshios for everything and so on.

the thing with "all swedes are gays" is mostly just a national joke between us finns, i remember when during high school we went to stocholm with my class and one of our mates was drunk, he started saying "all swedes are gays" and stuff like that (not in public thank god), normally we would just ignore him or hell even join him! but since we were visiting sweden and were gests in the country, we asked him to stop it, it wasnt funny anymore, just rude at this point even tho there werent any swedes near us hearing our conversation (in finnish....)
@fheedpexx9267
@fheedpexx9267 6 жыл бұрын
It's not rude at all. That's your biggest mistake, that you seem to think that saying someone is "gay" is offending. We just feel sorry for you when we hear that we are "gay". You're basically making fun of us for not being narrow minded and stuck in outdated notions.
@RAMBOdyykkari

the point was we only say it as a stupid joke but there are limits how long a joke stays a joke, and my point was he was being rude as fuck, if i were to come to Sweden and start talking shit about you guys just because you are swedes, i find that rude as fuck. Hell we dont even use the word gay as an insult anymore, hasnt been used for years, mostly kids who have just learned name calling do that.....

I'm from Finland. The reason why Felix insults Finland (perhaps not always seriously) is because Sweden and Finland basically have a love-hate relationship and we have a lot of competition, mainly in ice hockey. Also, we commonly make fun of Sweden and swedish people, so that has caused them to make fun of us as well, which is understandable, since we initially started it :D

(American here) My good friend is first Gen American, and his mom (Ritva) is from Finland. One day, he gives me Salmiakki, and I love it. Another visit, his mother said "Ron, would you like to try *real* Salmiakki? She says that the stuff that he gave me was too sweet, more for children. I laugh, because it is pretty salty, but accept her offering. WOW! Ritva's Salmiakki was SO much saltier, and strong tasting. Now we both make fun of my friend and his Salmiakki-for-children. :D Also, when I visit, I say "Hello Ritva, how is your day going?" She always replies "Well, I'm not dead yet..." I love her deadpan humor. Wonderful lady.

I think it must come from the stereotype that Finns are angry/grumpy all the time. When you look at the language itself, it favours soft consonants like H, M, N and L. That's also why Tolkien took inspiration from Finnish when creating the elvish languages in his books.
@solar0wind
@solar0wind 6 жыл бұрын
Nackagubben Yeah, probably. My native language happens to be German, and if you pronounce it like Hitler in his speeches, then of course you sound harsh, but normal German sounds completely different.

The whole "Sweden is gay" etc. joke (if you can call it that) has some historical roots. Homosexuality was legalized in Sweden in 1944 (c.f. 1971 in Finland). This reflected also with the acceptance and attitudes towards gay and LGBT people. This not only made Finns (who truly were more homophobic at the time, probably due to influence from the Soviet Union...) joke about the "gayness of Sweden", but it also made a lot of Finnish gay people move to Sweden, decreasing the amount of gays in Finland and increase in Sweden. Of course rights and attitudes are different now, but sadly the "joke" has still stayed. Although I would say that the idea of masculinity is still different in Finnish and Swedish cultures, also contributing to a bunch of homophobes saying "Sweden is gay lol".

The notion in Finland we think that all Swedes are gay comes from history. After the war there was shift to more traditional gender norms. Manly men and womanly women. In Sweden same-sex sexual activity was legalised in 1944 and in Finland you were used as an example: "We are not like those immoral Swedes where being gay is ok". Also, we don't study Swedish because Sweden but because we have our own Swedish speaking Finns. Studying Swedish is seen as a way to preserve the language here in Finland. It's debatable how well it is working.
@fheedpexx9267

I guess it's the same as when Americans say that "Europeans are gay". The question is not why you think Swedes are "gay". The question is why you think it's something bad, something to make fun of. Why you, still, seem to have these outdated notions in your society - and not only that, so proudly showcasing your ignorance. And (correct me if I'm wrong) you seem to think this somehow hurt's the Swedes? Swedes make fun of Finns for being so backwards as to make fun of Swedes for "being gay". Like, get with the times. Are you still in 1944?

2:50 "Wait did I see my avatar? .. I didn't even remember writing that.." I meant it in a joking way. Well of course you wouldn't know that. If you pick up a finnish joke book, it's almost a guarantee that there will be jokes about swedes being gay. So it really is a thing in Finland, about swedes being gay. In my group of friends, gay isn't an insult. Or well, it's jokingly said insult, kinda like any other "mean name" we call each other. Of course I wouldn't call a stranger gay. But I wouldn't call a stranger cunthead either. And since I'm finnish, I don't talk to strangers anyway. Finn logic: Won't talk even to their neighbours, call's the population of an entire country gay.

Finns don't learn Swedish because Finland was a part of Sweden, but because Swedish is one of TWO official languages in Finland (the other being Finnish, obviously). Learning Russian is not mandatory even if Finland was a part of Russia. The Finns had to start learning Swedish in 70's in case the student would become a public official, and therefore have to know both official languages of the country. Swedish is not an optional language because everyone should have a basic understanding of both official languages.

Yes (or because a lot of Swedes moved to Finland and Finns started speaking Swedish and it was the administrative language, and later nationalism arose and Russia decided that both Swedish and Finnish should be administrative languages), but Finns still learn Swedish because it's a official language and not because Finland once belonged to Sweden.

It's been interesting to note the differences between Finns and Swedes in big gaming meetups I've been to which have included mostly Finns (since they've been in Finland), some Swedes, and a few from other countries. Observation number one: yes, it's true that Finns are/can be quite quiet. Often it's because we don't have anything of importance to say or because we want to listen what the other person has to say first. The Swedes though, oh my God they can be so incredibly loud. They have been such social butterflies and the life of the party, which on the other hand is nice, but on the other hand it gets irritating pretty fast with interrupting others and generally being just...loud. The Swedes I know have also had extremely thought-out views on politics and seem to be quite well on the left in the political scale, and enjoy spreading their political opinions to a fault. Anecdotal, yes, but on the other hand Sweden is known to be proud of being so open-minded etc. (which I gotta point out is often quite hypocritical). In Finland sharing your political opinion is (or at least has been) kind of a taboo. Just like religion, you don't really talk about it and let others do their own thang. Also, this is pretty the stereotype of how Finns view Swedes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pt1jmJll2NXXdZs.html =D

Rybentor If talking about politics is taboo, that's pretty bad. I mean come on. Religion I get but politics is important sometimes. And you are right when you say swedes are left leaning. i don't really care what people think about sweden, but it really hurts when people just don't accept people who like the same gender as themselves. most sweds accept things like that, we are really openminded and we express our feelings. i guess to some people expressing your feelings is gay, being a guy and hug another guy seems kind of gay to some? but we just really like to show affektion to everybody. who cares? we do our thing and you do yours.

Somebody mentioned knives. As a Finn i associate a drunk Finn with a knife more to historical times (1800s to 1970s) than the last 30 years. In comparison younger generations drink less. I'm born 1984 so i'm between people who drink a lot and people who don't drink much. There was a severe depression in Finland 1991-1993 and it overshadowed the whole 90s (basically ended only by late 90s Nokia/IT boom). At it's peak 18.9% of people were unemployed so kids born in the 70s had very rough time getting into worklife and us 80s born kids probably had kinda poor childhood. Personally i wasted 2000-2009 studying and not getting a profession. When i FINALLY got a profession 2012 then the 2008-2018? recession is still going and i'm having a hard time getting into worklife in my 30s. Kids born in the 80s in Finland are veterans 2 recessions. What a weird rant LOL

I think most of your commentary was spot on...in my 40+ years experience the Finns don't "hate" the Swedes by any measure, it's friendly infighting at best. Finns tend to appreciate the Swedes as the culture/mindset that's the closest to Finland's own...those mutual national stereotypes you mention do seem to have some basis in fact, but are mostly recocgnised by both of our countries to be camp stereotypes used in comedy etc.

The Finnish language is super weird. You can speak it in a "harsh" way, or a very "soft" way. Basically the story behind the language is that several tribal dialects of finnic were in the area before most of our ancestors came there. Later on the tribes had contact with the proto-germans, with many proto-german words coming into finnish (Kuningaz, Druhtinaz, Thurisaz -> Kuningas, Ruhtinas, Turisas etc.). Most of the land was inhabited by the Sami people, but they moved gradually further north as the Finnic tribes in the south west grew. Then, during the Viking age the Swedes colonised Åland and started engaging in trade with the Western tribes, and more scandinavian influence started trickling in. Then Finland became part of Sweden, and the Swedes wanted a uniform language in the area to help deal with administration and religion, so the King gave a guy called Mikael Agricola permission to formulate a standard form of Finnish. However, the tribal dialects were very different and lacked many words and grammar rules, so Agricola took a couple western dialects, added in some Swedish, some German and some things from Latin. In the end what we had was pretty much the mess you now call "Finnish", which doesn't really even resemble other languages related to it all that much. Btw, the "gay" thing is because being gay was legalised in Sweden before it was in Finland, so all the Finnish gays back then moved into Sweden, and it turned into a running joke which has been going on for a very, very long time. As for the rest of the thrash talk, that's mostly because Finland is so similar to Sweden; it's basically Sweden's younger brother, so that's why there's this kind of teasing/boasting going on. You can still see it in modern day politics and other affairs that Sweden does still hold some real influence in Finland. For example Finnish politicians have generally not minded what for example French politicians want or say, but when Swedish politicians do something, Finnish politicians usually do the same thing, and they use phrases like "it works in Sweden, so..." Also most of the "cool" and "hip" new things come into Finland through Sweden, like fashion booms or music/art styles.

You mean it includes compulsory lessons of Finnish and English. And makes pupils and students waste time, energy and drive in the message of post-colonialism with Swedish.

You have a big amount of metal bands per capita as well. We have more, though. About the gay jokes, i think its funny you had a pink background. Did you do that on purpose :D ? Now we dont hate Swedes at all. Hating people who are so polite would make us feel like assholes :D More seriously though. If there are real general criticisms towards Sweden in Finland, i think it would be the excessively destructive immigration policies you have been having, and the lack of freedom of speech (clamping down on "hatespeech") and generally having too much hypocritical pc-culture. I know that doesent apply to all Swedes, but if we are to talk of negatives, i think thats what i and many others would point out to. We have the same kind of issues, just on a smaller scale. That aside, Swedish people seem very polite and nice, and i wouldnt see a reason why i would have something against Swedes. When not lingering into regressive hypocrisy, openness and tolerance are good virtues which seems to characterize the Swedish mindset. Honestly, though, i dont personally know any Swedes so this is all just an impression i have. Anyway cheers :)

"Hating people who are so polite would make us feel like assholes :D " that's a reality in most Finnish cases!
