I got my daughter a scope very similar to one of these trash scopes. Very poor all round. Wobbly and naff. The eyepieces are 100% plastic with a field of view close to nothing. The moon looked ok. The best view we ever got was one lucky night looking at Jupiter and its moons but they were very very tiny and not well focused. Still my daughter persisted and has looked through that rubbish scope so many times. We are talking years of battling with this thing. It wasn’t a hobby killer for her. She doesn’t know it yet but her birthday gift next week is a good quality 8” dob complete with some fairly nice eyepieces. It should open up so many possibilities for what she can see.

I actually got round to writing a review on it, just this week, advising how bad it was. Wish I’d sent it back back then but thought I was getting ok views. Yeah right. Got a skywatcher Skyhawk in February and the difference was amazing. These cheap telescopes should be banned. This video should, and I hope, save people wasting they’re money. Thanks again. I have bought my first Meade Infinity 70mm in a thrift store for $40. It was without eyepieces, without rod for an azimuthal fork mount and someone played with it and wedge from focusing mechanism was inside the tube. I fixed the focusing mechanism and your videos helped me to choose decent Plossl eyepiece and it works awesome! I did had only an hour without clouds since buying and moon looks very clear and detailed!

Good advice, I was given a 76700 with the hyugen eyepieces, exactly like the first you showed. RVO in Rotherham sorted me out with a Sky-Watcher 130m and it’s saved my interested! Keep up the good work!

Celestron, Meade, Explore Scientific,and Hi-Point are some great scopes from around $100.00 to over $25,000 US dollars. I own a Celestron computerized 114 and 70mm travel scope. I have an explore Scientific 60mm travel scope and for terrestrial views I use a 50mm Tasco. They are all nice beginner scopes for sure.

I have to say this, for the first example used, you'll see those little (usually 76mm) reflector scopes everywhere for around the same price. They're actually quite alright for what they are, a 50 bucks telescope, bought one just to see what it could do, combine it with a reasonable eyepiece and you could easily see Jupiter's moons, and some of the banding. I've even seen people put bigger mirrors in them, seeing how the tube is actually quite roomy for what's inside. Sure they're pretty much 'toy quality', but compared to those awful refractor toy grade telescopes from the past, quite decent, definitely less of a hobby killer for kids.

I started with a Celestron travel scope, one look at the moon and i was hooked. I then bought a Celestron 114 newt. I soon out grew that so i bought a Segan 6" newt. After a chat with a gentleman at work, he GAVE me an 8" Meade dob. the mirrors were totally trashed. The primary had gone pretty milky around the edges and no matter how I cleaned it, it still wasn't right. So I put on my big boy pants, stripped it all down, and sent the mirrors away for recoating. Who knew that it would cost as much, if not more than a new 8" dob!. Anyways to cut a short story long, i now have a eq6r pro mount and an 8" edge hd. Its very easy to get hooked on this amazing past time PS, I also converted the 8" dob to fit on my eq6 mount!

Jason, I really enjoyed this video. I got a Bushnell telescope as a 10th year gift from an old employer a decade ago, and I learned at first light that I was happy I hadn't actually spent my money on it; .965 Huygens eyepieces, cheesy tripod, bend til it breaks to align "finder scope" with no optics in it, etc. So when I decided to actually get into the hobby three or four years ago, I already knew to only spend my money on quality products. I enjoyed the video so much the first time, four or five hours earlier today, that I just watched it a second time for good measure.

So your first two examples of telescopes to buy are the celestron 130EQ, which from what I can see is on all of the lists of telescopes to not buy (i.e. hobbykillers, there is even a subreddit not to buy this). I'm checking this as I was just gifted a 114EQ. As its not too late to send back, i'm considering having this done based on feedback, even though it is a gift.

I own the Orion 130ST Reflector Telescope and that is a little on the higher side for beginner budget but I suggest it 👍

I have just bought a 152mm (6" in old money) Bresser refractor with correct mount and tripod. It weighs a lot. I'm now in my 60s. Trip one-get out tripod, step-2 get out telescope, step-3 try and mount the bugger, step-4 have a rest, step-5 its started raing. Repeat steps 3-1 in reverse.

When I was a kid, my parents bought me a refractor (that wasn't cheap, but also wasn't good) with a fixed eyepiece, and a sliding tube to alter magnification. The moon was about the only thing you could get a decent view of. Years later, they bought me a 4" reflector from Argos. Again, not cheap, but also not very good. When the box comes covered in photos of deep sky objects you'll never be able to see using the scope, you know it's bad. Many years later, I bought an old but good Meade 10" SCT. Amazing scope (although I've managed to misplace the large box of gubbins I need to run it 🤦‍♂️). Bought a cracking wee Meade ETX a couple of years ago, and for the money, was a cracking buy. Think it was under £300, with a solid tripod, decent optics, a few eyepieces, the Autostar controller, and all in proper transport boxes/bags. It's easy to transport, and it all hooks up to run off the laptop. The only reason it doesn't get used as much as it should is down to work and weather. Can't do much about those 🤦‍♂️

Your spot on there Jason. I fell once for a crappier than crap 500x all plastic thing, and couldn't even see the sun,never mind the stars and planets. I had set it up arse about face and then realised l was looking at the ground.

I had a cheap plastic one bought from woolworths in 1988 - i cld see Jupiters Moons with it! It was amazing - it also had a plastic 35mm thread for a SLR camera! I some how lost the telescope, can never remember the name, but it got me hooked. One could argue that workmanship/quality 40yrs ago was light years head of the rubbish today.

Hi Jason. Great channel. Just found it recently & now watching it all. I'm a beginner, in fact barely been out yet due to cloudy nights. I did a bad thing. Bought a telescope off of EBay not knowing the first thing (been using binocs, which my wife calls my knockers, for the past year). Anyway, just saw it and bought it because it looked nice & the mount looked good. Bad boy. Still, turns out I fluked a very good condition Skywatcher 130 with the EQ2 mount for £50. Only one eye piece though, the 25mm one. Not bothered though as I'll get some better ones, a 10mm and a barlow when money allows (made redundant a couple of months ago, now just waiting to hear if I got the job I wanted that I interviewed for a week or so ago). Anyway, bit of a fluke. I now realise how crazy it was and how little I knew when I bought it.

On the first telescope the immediate red flag with me is that it is mounted on the tripod, backwards. Another thing is I absolutely agree, Huygens eyepieces are terrible. However, Huygens eyepieces have two elements. If an eyepiece has a single element (plastic) eyepiece it would be a sub-Huygens nightmare 🤣 Also, avoid eyepieces that say SR (Symmetric Ramsden). Kellner (K) or Modified Achromat (MA, both 3 element) would in my opinion be a minimum good eyepiece. A Plössl eyepiece (4 element in 2 groups) even better and are often quite inexpensive.

A few years ago my Wife chose a cheap telescope from a catalog as a work anniversary gift. It was very poor quality and very difficult to use. A year ago I convinced her to let me throw it out and buy a decent one, so I purchased a Celestron 6SE.

I was able to observe Jupiter, the Galilen moons AND Saturn and its rings (all in the same view!) through a 20-ish year old Bushnell 20-45X60mm spotting scope (which I use for long range shooting) during the great conjunction a while back. You don't need alot of scope to get started. Just some passible optics, a steady hand, and a bit of knowledge on where to point the darned thing.

I think the best telescope for a beginner that wants to observe the sky and also do astrophotography is a small APO refractor doublet or triplet with a small focal length, a DSLR camera and a stable EQ mount.That is if you have a good budget.Or if you just want to observe and learn the stars just buy a good binocular 10x50 with Porro lens and an astronomy book for beginners.Reading combined with practice is the best way to step in this wonderful hobby.But that is just my opinion.A reflector with an Dobsonian mount can be the best setup for a beginner but it has to be frequently colimated so for a beginner to get into something like that can lead to losing interest.Keep up the good work.

Last month I got a Celestron Travel Scope 80 and I was surprised by its optical quality even with its included cheap eyepieces. Now a red flag brand: I had a Seben 114-1000 reflector several years ago, and THAT is a hobby killer. I don't recommend Seben telescopes. Cheap super low quality trash. Then I consulted with a specialist from a local observatory, and he told me to run for the hills, lol! The Celestron TS 80 is not a pro scope, but next to Seben it's like a luxury yacht next to a trash can boat.

I got the £58 telescope first. You can take out the adapter and its a 1.25" so it works with SVBony. I replaced the finder and got new 1.25" lens. It`s not too bad. I have a Celestron 130 now so all the stuff I bought for the first scope is the same. I got the Celestron second hand for £90 and it has a motor so if I had known I would of got for it first.

Here to see if my purchasing decision of my already purchased telescope is bad!

Hey Jason very good advice you gave in video. Be careful what you buy. I bought a little bnise 70mm refractor from amazon UK. It was just under a hundred pound and yes I can upgrade it. The eyepieces it came with it was OK better than I bought which gives good views of the moon. Its one of those scopes that you can attach a smartphone and I tried it with samsung s7 on moon. Turned out good. Tripod wasn't that good but I've got better tripod for it. I usually read reviews on amazon UK and not so much on KZfaq. First light optics is good only bought one garbage item from first light optics the astro essentials 90 degree polar scope which was £,69 and to be honest it was garbage at that price it should be alot better. Sir Patrick Moore didn't like this cheap small telescopes and advised getting a good pair of binoculars instead. Celestron did a WiFi scope but it got a bad reviews because you couldn't connect it to WiFi and your tablet. Some good cheap ones but most aren't good. Stay safe buddy and clear skies!

Hi Jason, though I didn't come looking for this video, it was nice to watch. I'm resisting the urge to blather on and on about my own experience as a novice. But I will say, I couldn't help thinking of analogous comparisons of these telescopes..such as guns...as in water pistols, cap guns, pellet guns and actual hand guns. I would like to believe my lil celestron powerseeker 127eq is at least a pellet gun..minus a co2 cartrige(poor eq mount), a floating barrel( flimsy finder scope), and only 10 pellets out of a box of 2000(stock starter eye pieces)...I'd like to up grade and tweak some stuff. I have taken in enough information to know what to look for. But call me lazy but I want to see someone like you to show me the best and worst options available...case/ telescope specific ...of course lol...but seeing as your in the field and might benefit from producing such content..I'd thought this might be the right place to share that idea....perhaps you could get sponsored for pushing upgrades...unless in my case celestron thoroughly believes in the buy once cry once adage...and refuses to cater to the oblivious potential consumer #listenupcelestron...whatch think..I don't even know what I just said by the end of this typing in a tiny window on my phone...at any rate keep up the good work...I subscribed to your channel because of your apparent sincerity....you should be a much bigger channel..but how big is the astronomy community....lots of respect from nova scotia ;)

Antares makes new Plossl 0.965 eyepieces for those equipped scopes. I agree to avoid them in the first place.

avoid Bird Jones designs these use a cheap lens inside the focuser tube too exaggerate the focal length..to bring it up to the stated focal length, its a terrible design, make sure the physical length of the telescope comes close to the stated focal length in MM

I have many Celestron telescopes and I like them. Stellarvue is very good, but cost a little more.

Got myself one of those thrash 50x360 "telescopes" just to goof around while i save enough for a meade polaris 90mm eq, i say to myself Galilleo discovered Jupiter with a even thrashier piece of crap so that'll do for now. To my suprise i was able to see Jupiter's disc with that thing. Helps with scratching the itch for a while

I’ll be devils advocate. The best telescope is the one you use. I have a nice 16” a 12” and an 8”. Well, i found an old tasco 3” reflector that the wife picked up in a yard sale years ago. I ditched the tripod and made a basic dob mount for it. Cleaned the optics, flocked the tube. Also modified the spider. The the legs were over 1/4” tick, so i just filed them down some. Collimated it. Now i do use “nicer” celestron optics that came with one of my scopes, but nothing special. Now this little telescope sits by the door, and has got more “sky time” then the other 3 combined. Its small, easy to move around, no cooling time. And best of all, its compact and cheap enough, that i can let the kid handle it and learn on it. This thing works surprisingly well for what it is. Now, i would never go out of my way to buy such a telescope.

Is there a minimum budget for a cheap beginner telescope you recommend, below which you're better either not bothering or possibly buying binoculars instead? Would you personally buy the firstscope if you had a low budget, knowing what you know?

Have heard lots of good things about the sarblue maksutov cassegrain. I seen a review from it and man it was a sharp little thing. That comes with very good eye pieces. I think there like 110 dollars. American. But from what I've seen well worth it for first time buyers. And would be a good one to use with kids. It's only like 12 inches long and has a focal length of 750. Check them out.

What is your opinion on the celestron starsense explorers? Trash or not?

Are Free Solider Telescopes any good?

1:24 no. But I got mine on sale it was so cheap that I thought it would be worth it even if the only good part was the tripod, which to me is pro quality compared to what I'm used to seeing. I plan on getting my "end game" telescope in a year or so, I didn't want to buy it before I had all the beginner's troubles worked out. So I got the astromaster 70az. Like I said, the tripod to me was worth it, I was amazed at how heavy it is. the 10x, 20x and star diagonal seems fine and if there's no problems with the scope then it's a win, win, I think. I did as much research as I could, not knowing anything. 😃 now I'll continue watching the video and don't say the celestron astromaster 70az! 😉

I've got that little orange telescope, except mine is white. It's useable. Throw away the Barlows. It can see Jupiter with decent clarity. But it's best suited for moon and terrestrial. The solar filter is a neat gimmick. The cellphone holder needs to be thrown away too. The tripod is as much a joke as the barlows. I was so peeved when it arrived, because I paid $77USD for it. It should be a $30 telescope you'd find at Walmart. I went to return it via Amazon, but they completely lost the order and already refunded it (thankfully). So I got my money back, and have no way to return it, so I'm stuck with it lol. But I've played around with it, and if you forget about the gimmicky Barlows, and put it on a stronger tripod, and I'm kinda surprised what it can see. I've since purchased a Celestron with 114aperature and 900focal, which I love.

Oh gawd the telescope titles haha "Pro night vision with space star Moon HD" what on Earth lol I'll never forget the word Huygens either because it haunts me Jason, but the HD Moon scope reflector might be even worse because even Huygens eyepieces should have 2 glass elements! It's a real shame because I see they've included a 5 piece set when they could have replaced them with a couple of cheap modified achromat eyepieces like what Sky-Watcher include for around the same price. Not amazing but much better than plastic lenses. I shouldn't laugh because it's exactly the kind of thing I was given for xmas aged 7 and it put me off until I looked through a proper telescope as a teenager. There really should be a limit to what they're allowed to sell, although I must confess at least I've not seen as many Hubble images on plastic hobby killer scopes in recent years. This is an important video, thanks for saving people :)

why Pro? Galileo wish to have these telescopes. Some glass H 16 H20 are good for planets or SR eyepieces even better than coated Plossl, Meade 2000 MA eyepieces surpasses many eyepieces.

binoculars are good for kids at first and then if they go out looking every night you know they love the sky and can buy something more expensive for them

You know you're buying a lightly used second hand telescope when the advert pic shows it setup upside down hehe :)

Even good quality Huyghenian eyepieces have a problem which is that they have poor eye relief. In other words your eye is going to be very close to the eyepiece to look through it. This can be uncomfortable and you may only be able to see your eyelashes. It is that close. So even 1.25" size H eyepieces are not a good buy for the beginner. It is even worse for the .965 ones. The other thing that can cause disappointment is the low resolution. The bigger the objective lens or the mirror the better the resolution and the more you will see. I feel that 90mm is about the minimum to be worthwhile to give views of the cloud belts on Jupiter and the rings of Saturn. Where they talk about magnification trash scopes talk about things like 500x magnification. The magnification in limited by the aperture (the size of the mirror or objective) a rule of thumb is 2 times the diameter of the lens or mirror in mm at most. In real life conditions it can be a lot worse. To work out the magnification divide the focal length of the eyepiece into the focal length of the telescope. So an 8mm eyepiece on a scope with a 800mm focal length gives a maximum 100 times magnification. On such a scope with a 1 inch objective that magnification is about 4x the useable magnification and the images will be rubbish. Many of the H eyepieces have short focal lengths (4mm, 6mm) and so can quickly get beyond the useful range for the scope you are using. Avoid them.

Just bought a Celestron Powerseeker 127 EQ. It has some good features and other beginners seem to like them but they do have those eye pieces with the H but they seem to be a newer version. Is this alright for a beginner?

It would be nice to have actual picture or render to show you how bad the image your new gear will provide you! For low budget, this is not a great selling point!

So if the eye piece has a single lens it’s junk? Or a lens that’s a single layer.

Good beginner telescope will always include a high power 4mm eyepiece and a 3x or (even better!) a 5x barlow so you can get plenty of magnification to look at everything in heaps of detail. You will want at least 675x magnification and that should be clearly stated on the box in very large, easy to read font. If it isn't then you've got to ask yourself: why would the manufacturer want to hide such important information from their customers?! The really good ones will also have nice big colourful photos of Jupiter and Saturn, galaxies is nebulae on the box, to show you exactly what you can expect to see through the telescope. These manufacturers show that they have confidence in their products and will stand behind them 100%. Support you get with these companies is second to none... on some sort of list order anyway 😝🤡

Wanna hear an example of a super poorly made telescope? Well here ya go! camera tripod AKA torture device: extremely flimsy and wobbly, creaky jumpy and just not good. Optical finderscope: is super loose and doesn't stay in alignment at all Eyepieces: huygens eyepieces, small eye relief, and Barlow is a very long low quality one Optics: pretty good not gonna lie. Diagonal: only make the view blurry, forcing you to not use it The telescope of which is a twinstar telescope, 60mm aperture 300mm focal length scope. And I have it... Anyone know how I can improve it and make it less of a pain to use? 😖 UPDATE: I got another telescope! a 70mm aperture and 400mm focal length refractor! And I also got a new tripod to replace the one that came with it, cause the regular tripod couldn't point all the way up, and the new one is AMAZING! I also bought a new 0.965 inch kellner 6mm eyepiece that has a higher field of view then the one that came with the scope as well! still waiting for the eyepiece to arrive, and both eyepiece and tripod should fit with the old scope as well! WEEHHOOOO!! 😁

Huygens eyepieces are the absolute worst of all. Considering that they were invented by Dutch astronomer Christian Huygens way back in the 17th century, it is a wonder to me that they are still being manufactured let alone used by anyone.

Price is not the only factor to consider. I have only been in the hobby a few months. My first telescope was a First Light 10" Dobsonian (61 pounds). Too heavy. So, then I bought a Celestron Omni 150mm XLT Newtonian reflector on a CG-4 mount (46 pounds). Too heavy. So, then I bought a Orion Observer 134mm Newtonian reflector on a EQ-3 motorized mount (23 pounds). So, then I bought a Bresser 102mm ED refractor and a Skywatcher AZ GTi go to mount (14.5 pounds). Nice. Sadly, I have a room full of telescopes and accessories and owe the credit card company about ($3,500).

Ya wanna know what else are hobby killers? 1. Mosquitos (Making it impossible to go outside without losing 50% of your blood supply) 2. Tons of trees (making it very hard to see certain objects) 3. Clouds (making it very hard to see certain objects) 4. Parents not allowing you to go outside at night (Self explanatory) 5. Night time animals (Animals like coyotes, raccoons, bears, ect making it dangerous to go outside) All of which I suffer from. Yay... Ugh

A telescope I'd say not to get is any cinda of first scope so any 76mm table top ones or even the meade 82mm there useless for anything other then the moon and to be honest there not brilliant at that the skywatcher 100mm table top scope is very good if that is the way u wanted go and isn't that much money 😉good luck to anyone who wants there first scope 🤣 iv got 5 now and still don't no what I want 🤣

I used to say you won't go wrong with Celestron, Meade, or Orion. But, they make junk, too. The Astromaster 130 my friend's kid got for Christmas a couple years ago is junk. Apparently has a spherical primary, came out of the box with the secondary loose and almost fell off, the dec setting circle is off by about 2.3°, so its completely useless and the whole thing vibrates so badly when focusing or tracking, that its near impossible to use. I was so disappointed and just didn't have it in me to tell them. I did what I could with it and give them a couple of my own favorite eyepieces and collimator. On another note, I bought a Meade 4500 in the early 90s and it was really nice. The mirrors finally deteriorated, so I replaced them with some from a newer model and of course, spherical junk that deteriorated in no time. No doubt all these budget model optics come from the same Chinese manufacturer, no matter what brand they slap on them. So, last time I refurbished my 4.5, I just bought a new spherical primary/secondary set off ebay for $20 and cant tell the difference. Just couldn't spend $150 on a parabolic 4.5. I think these days, the best way to go budget, is a refractor. I got a Celestron Travel 60 used for $25 and while the tripod is completely awful, I was shocked at the usefulness of the scope. Theres some chromatic aberration, but the image is sharp and clear and I can see Saturn's rings and Jupiter's spot, with a 8mm plossl. With my 32mm its just stars and stars. I still need to find an appropriate mount for it, but $25 just for the OTA was well worth it.

I actuall bought that first telescope you showed a year ago and its absolute trash. The telescope was so light that even touching it slightly will shake like hell. Tripod is trash, telescoe is trash and the eyepiece is pure garbage. The views of the telescope is blurry even the stars look like comets through the eyepiece, Id be better off using my eyes to stargaze than a garbage telescope. I cant even collimate the telescope properly, i mean actually its impossible to collimate the telescope since the focuser is not even alligned to the secondary mirror properly.Everything is just a nightmare. Luckily that didnt ruin my interest to astronomy. After almost a year, I bought a new and better telescope (Celestron Powerseeker 114eq) and it was life changing. The views of the telescope was so different to the other trash telescope even if the mirror just changed 1.5 inch in size since the other telescope has a 3 inch (76mm) aperture. Hopefully no one will experience what I experience because that telescope is a big frustration to me. Happy stargazing to everyone!
