Woah! I didn't know that the squat bar is 10 lbs heavier and would use whatever bar was free at the time. This could explain some of the times when I feel like the gravity is turned up (particularly for ohp)
@maia3420
@maia3420 2 жыл бұрын
Exact same issue last year. I figured it was because it was thicker and made it harder to grip. I didn’t realize I was benching 10 more lbs (or that I was failing 415 lb squats not 405 lb squats).

@ThatEgghead

@@AcceleratingUniverse you're totally right, I'm sorry. I'm an abject failure. I've called the gym and told them to never let me back in. I've notified my uni and asked they also revoke my degree. Anyway, a more sincere answer to your polite inquiry- I had been under the impression that bars were generally standardized to either 20kg or 45 lbs and that something outside if that would be more specialty. Just because it's bigger doesn't mean it's heavier, there's alloys and methods of construction such as adding voids, making things hollow, etc. to keep weight down. Based on Alan's anecdotes and the likes on the comment, it seems like not an entirely atypical experience.

Switched from a high-end commercial chain to a smaller local gym with Rogue and Eleiko, definitely a useful primer for me. It’s great to be on power and hybrid bars consistently now, though I do have to admit that benching with a squat bar by mistake was … exciting, and a bit of a grip training.

Remember the humble aluminum technique bar. Really great for warm-ups, for learning the Olympic lifts, and for rehabbing injuries. It's also a good bar for general use at home by seniors, children, disabled people, or anyone who's not going to put more than 150 pounds on it. I know a 65 year old woman who used one to start overhead pressing again. She also likes how easy it is to stow away the 6 foot 15 pounder in her condo.

At the end of last year during the sales I bought my first personal bar. I got it with red cerakote because it looked cool. It had "volcano" knurling which is half-way between "hill" and "mountain" knurling in sharpness (these names refer to what the little knurling nodules look like close-up). Something I thought people might want to know if they are looking at buying a barbell, is that while the cerakote looks cool, it sort-of caps over the knurling and makes it slightly less grippy. I'm fairly the same knurling profile on a bare steel or oxide bar would feel slightly sharper (not sure about chrome).

Quick note about the weightlifting bar: most weightlifting specific bars (as in ones that are advertised as being olympic spec) do have centre knurls, women's bars dont have centre knurling at all. Also dont know why you didnt mention this but oly bars have much faster and less resistive spin, usually with needle bearings. If you can open the bar to service (you usually cant as there tends to be a star nut type threaded end cap behind the snap ring) you should NEVER use oil. Bushings use oil, bearings use grease, lithium grease is fine. This spin is for reduced torque and better turnover, otherwise the resistance would destroy your wrists.

I wasn't always sure exactly where my 20kg Ohio bar fell on the spectrum. I find it fairly well rounded for most compound lifts (makes sense it's a hybrid). My wife has a 25mm 15kg women's bar that's pretty similar (B&R 2.0 with dual knurl rings / moderate knurl sharpness). I actually like the bare steel finish on hers rather than black zinc and just a slight bit more than a nice thin cerakote.
