An insight to Chesapeake Bay Log Canoe Racing. Here is a fairly typical regatta start video taken onboard Flying Cloud, a Log Canoe built in 1932, recently restored and now part of the race fleet. I do apologize for the salty language!

Wow..that’s rule 11 on steroids with the planks sticking out so far! When capsized, it looks like the masts are unstepped?

Yes you are correct, masts are "unstepped", the boat is righted, and then manually bailed until she and the masts can be towed back to the dock. Then masts are stepped, running and standing rigging is sorted, sails are sorted and hopefully all got done before the next start gun!

I like the old sail plans even with the modern cuts. It would be very artistic with spider jobs but not as efficient!

In perfect conditions for these boats what sort of speeds are we looking at?

Between 8 to 9 knots is what we hit last few races. Not sure they were the perfect condition yet, but these old boats do move along.

@@andymueller82 Thanks Andy, that is pretty much what I thought and seems to be pretty standard for fast prewar boats. I used to race broads cruisers, sloop rigged gaffers ,built in the twenties and thirties. Not such a long water line length or overall length but a big rig producing similar results.

We did indeed! We had go through in a tack followed by quick jibe, and that was it!

Yup, old slow and no fun! But it's all relative, isn't it? That's exactly why I guess so many spectators come out and watch us sail these! I guess you haven't spent many hours racing a log canoe?
