Continuing to love this truck. Since this video was made the drivetrain has been fully rebuilt to stop oil leaking everywhere and get rid of vibrations. All the old rusty floppy springs and shocks were replaced so it no longer sways so much or bottoms out suspension. Exhaust leaks are fixed and fresh coil make it peppier yet quieter. And the brakes work properly because they aren't full of oil. We ran it in 2018 and 2019 Colorado Gambler 500 as Team Killer Rabbit and done about 8000km offroad. Flopped a second time too.

The Pinzgauer can also be seen as the spiritual successor of the Tatra 805. They both have the same roots and were developed and produced for the same tasks and essentially both are the brainchild of Hans Ledwinka (the Pinzgauer also designed by his son Erich Ledwinka). The off-road capabilities of the unique chassis design are highly praised and while the Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer is no longer produced, they will remain in service for decades to come. Tatra still produces heavy off-road trucks that make use of a central load-carrying tube and axles with independently suspended swinging half-axles for civilian and military applications.

The locking diff's on these vehicles is an absolute engineering masterpiece. There is a video out there showing it. Worth a look if you like your engineering. The whole vehicle is full of great engineering. The chassis is basically a long tube down the center with the prop shaft inside it and diff's at each end. Full independent suspension, portal axles, etc etc. The later vehicles had a VW water cooled engine.

You are right but it's a little ironic when you mention VW. Why? Well the mastermind behind Pinzgauer was mr. Ledvinka jr. he came to Austria from Cezhoslovakia after soviets invaded a country and his father was the main constructor in Tatra before WW2 and his Tatra T 97 was actualy a car copied by Ferdinand Porsche to became a VW beatle. Pinzgauer was made in Styer Puch company later Stayer Benz Puch (Today Magna Stayer) (also a birth place of Mercedes G or Puch G) in city Graz Austria very near Arnold Swarchenegger home vilage the name Stayer come from the region (devided betwen Austria and Slovenia) and the name Puch come from the founder of this company and he was from Slovenia the some country as Melania Trump and all three are from Stayer region

Great comment. I will research Mr Ledvinka. I knew there was some link to Tatra because of the similarity in the tube chassis design and the locking diffs. For anyone who is interested in 4WD and locking diffs, go look at a video called Pinzgauer Driveline Operation. This is an engineering masterpiece. I can't speak highly enough of the design. It has never been bettered. Hats off to Mr Ledvinka Jr. Like many in history, never got the recognition he deserved. Thank you for sharing.

You are welkom Czech were quite unlucky back in time first they got invasion from Hitler and then they got soviet dictator Stalin and almost all high tech know how for comercial use was doomed. Btw: If you look for Pinz you can also look on the region from the former Yugoslavia they have quite a lot of them because it was used by Yugo military with another Stayer Puch product namely Puch G.

This truck was designed by Erich Ledwinka, son of Hans Ledwinka, who invited the Tatra concept with central tube and independent portal axles. So the Pinz is very similar to a Tatra truck.

At that time we had the Haflinger (as a small transporter) in the Swiss Army. The vehicle was unstoppable, small, but really suitable for all-terrain use. The Pinzgauer is absolutely an excellent, robust off-road vehicle that can handle even extreme situations.

Brings back memories of my days in the Swiss army. I was driving the same style Pinzgauer, but not with the antenna equpment. Compared to other old style Swiss army vehicles I used to drive the Pinzgauer was extremely light to steer. We had big 4 by 4 trucks without power steering. When an officer ordered us to practice parking for two hours straight with those monsters you thought that your arms were about to fall off. Missed good heavy duty offroad tires on this one.

We extensively used these when I served in one of European armies. The thing just keeps going. Very little maintenance. As durable as Puch G (or MB G-Wagen just stripped down military version). Those two are the most rugged vehicles I experienced.

4wd some WOW - sooo much missing knowledge! And at the same time do loud. The usage of this vehicle is correctly mentioned in the vid. The it's NO part similar to VW or Volvo and of course NOT made from these companies! It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with LTs. This is a “Zentralrohrrahmen“ chassis! Similar to Tatra - completely different to all letter frame style trucks. Haven't you seen the IFS in front and rear working? How can this compare top solid axles in Volvo or LTs?

6:58 - Actually, they did extensive crash testing with the Pinz, with documentary footage showing 30MPH frontal impacts that deformed the bumper, but left the rest of the front end unscathed. The frame is so rigid, it doesn't collapse like a vintage VW bus would. Certainly wouldn't be comfortable for the occupants, but they'd still have their lower limbs intact. Having said that, you get going fast enough, you can destroy anything in a crash...but these only go about 60MPH at the top end.

I owned a 710M for nearly six years. Expensive to repair but what a vehicle! Like owning a VW bus on steroids! Air cooled motor, lockers front and rear, shift on the fly and high and low range. Ten man troop carriers these things and they work! I drove mine all over the country when I owned it. Had a license HUMMTHS for years. I slept in the back which I converted to a bedroom. It was the best thing for serious off roading and went and did things my Land Cruiser simply could not do. I had a military trailer that really could off road large hauls of firewood through serious muck. Sold it when I sold my property I had it for. The suspension is the best thing about them. Absorbs easily the toughest bumps and you are in comfort and feel quite in control! People had trouble keeping up with me so they always made me go last. Bored being behind people getting stuck that you can breeze right through but otherwise great rigs. Mine was a 76 Gas engine. Loved it! Gotta watch for leaks that ruin the brakes at the wheel cylinders but otherwise pretty much maintenance free.

With today's extreme weather events I feel there's going to be a resurgence of such simple, practical, no-nonsense, go-anywhere vehicles. Inexpensive box-shaped body, low power, high endurance engine, square vertical windows not likely to be damaged by hail, very capable 4WD drivetrain and plenty of space inside to carry people and goods. Seriously, this is how a rational vehicle should look like. No hot rod but will get you home even if there's no road left.
